That’s laughable

Don Day | February 27, 2004

KBCI reports that “one of the reasons Clear Channel stations in Boise don’t air Howard Stern is the possibility of fines…”

No – the only reason NO station in Boise (or the across the state) airs Stern is that he wouldn’t work out here. We all know that if someone thought Stern would bring numbers, he would be in the market.

KBCI’s flawed reporting also says that stations can face up to $25k in fines. Actually the number is $27,500. I’m not a math major, but it seems to me that $27.5 is more than $25.

OK, duh. It’s Mancow… not Mad Cow.

Don Day | February 27, 2004

OK, where was I? In the “Jacent on the ascent” post, I wrote something about Mad Cow mornings.

I know it’s Mancow… maybe my brain was rotting from all the beef I ate.

Hmmm.

Don Day | February 27, 2004

OK, so it’s a rare thing. But J-105’s website is not only current, but they are giving away tix to Aerosmith online!

Books on the rad-eee-o

Don Day | February 27, 2004

Ken Bass & Teri Tate are holding court with a book club of sorts.

Each Wednesday, Stephanie Worrell & Belinda Isley come in to argue/spar/fight/disagree over a book. They only spend a few minutes on it – but it’s a great example of knowing your audience and coming up with interesting content.

Jerr Moore jumps again

Don Day | February 27, 2004

Former Spud Brother Jerr Moore had recently resurfaced on KSAS and KCIX doing fill-in and weekend work for the CC group.

He popped up on KQXR the other day filling in for big J evenings. He’s now bounced from Citadel (Magic overnights) to CC (Spud Bro. on Arrow) to Journal (Spud Bro. on J105) to CC (fill-in) to Journal again (KQXR fill in).

F This

Don Day | February 27, 2004

What a silly little game.

All week, the Magic Morning Show teased that they would play Eamon’s F It unedited.

They played the edited version, and talked over all the edits. Pretty lame.

Did one morning show just decide to “F*** it?”

Don Day | February 25, 2004

Sorry to be cagey – but something is up with a local morning show.
I heard a rumor I can’t validate.

Know something? E-mail
UPDATE In the comments below, we’re told that Eamon’s “F. It” was set to be played on KZMG this morning – except it would be the full unedited version.

My understanding is this runs much much deeper – and that something else is going on.

Developing…

It’s a bit slow

Don Day | February 19, 2004

I have had the breakdowns of ratings sitting in my box for several weeks, but haven’t had a chance to break them down — I have mornings and demos. Look for that in the late part of the week.

The ground is rumbling in Eastern Idaho

Don Day | February 19, 2004

Out of E. Idaho:
KPLV licensed to Idaho Falls at 105.5 has changed call letters to KTHK and format to “young country”. They are going by the moniker THE HAWK. The station was formerly Hot AC. Just as I said previously when they were airing Christmas music, Bonneville was contemplating a format change and now they’ve done it.

But why country? This makes the FOURTH hot country station in the Idaho Falls/Pocatello market including KID-FM licensed to Idaho Falls, KUPI-FM licensed to Idaho Falls and KZBQ licensed to Pocatello. KPLV (or should I say KTHK) also has a translator in Pocatello as does KID-FM but NO translator for KUPI.

Maybe Bonneville should change their on-air slogan from The Hawk to THINK (KTHK)?

OutKast on KCIX?

Don Day | February 19, 2004

Very strange – I heard OutKast shaking their Polaroid picture on Mix 106. Seemed out of format — but I guess anything can be a Hot AC song.

The Magic PM show with Jayar, Big Boy & The Wifey

Don Day | February 15, 2004

KZMG-FM just spun out about 40 minutes of non-stop talk (it’s 12:15am Saturday night/Sunday morning). It was lively, funny — and LOCAL. An amazing thing these days at 11:30pm on a Saturday night.

They ran out of delay… it sounded as though a few choice words slipped out. It was a bit like a local Loveline — very funny and engaging.

The Fox was AWHOL — but Jayar’s wife was in studio.

Favorite moment: Here’s Chingy on 96.9 The Eagle — Classic Rock that… oh wait, that’s the competition. And they didn’t mean the way Magic & the Eagle are competition.

Sweet.

Jacent on the ascent

Don Day | February 13, 2004

Jacent Jackson, currently PD for KQXR (and KJOT to the best of my memory) is checking out.

All Access reports Jackson will head to Emmis WKQX (wow… similar calls) in Chi-town. He will taken on Assistant PD & Music Director roles.

His first day in the nation’s third largest market will be March 3.

This after KQXR had an exceptional book.

WKQX is anchored by Mad Cow mornings in his home market.

As of this writing, no posting for Jacent’s job on the JBG website

Dees dumped

Don Day | February 10, 2004

Rick Dees, the long time host of the KIIS-FM morning show in LA (and for a while syndicated on KSAS-FM in Boise), is leaving the station after 22 years.

The likely replacement? Ryan Seacrest.

Yes, he is officially everywhere.

No word on if Dees weekend show will go away – but Seacrest recently took over rival Casey Kasem’s hot 20 countdown – so it’s unlikely the Idoler would take over those duties.

When you make your home in a house made of glass… refrain from juggling rocks.

Don Day | February 6, 2004

Heard on KSAS-FM:

“At least our night guy didn’t get his name from a Disney film.”

Funny… except KISS’s night guy goes by the name of SMOOCH. So we have “Smooch” making fun of “Bambi.” If the guy’s fake-name was Killer or Mad Dog… well then, Bambi might be something to make fun of.

Ratings: The triumph of live & local

Don Day | February 4, 2004

KSAS had a bad book. It’s that simple. To the station’s credit, there was a LOT of turnover – losing the morning guy, etc. Is KISS a one trick pony? It’s been pretty much exactly the same since launch. CHR is the one place where frequent change can be helpful.

KZMG had a nice bounce, in fact this is the heritage popster’s best book since Spring 99. They saw a 20% increase over spring.

A friend tells us that Bambia was number one at night… interesting.

Ratings: Newsies in lock step

Don Day | February 4, 2004

What goes up in the fall, falls in the spring.

KIDO & KBOI have both traditionally done better in the fall. KBOI has taken the lead from KIDO of late. Interesting how the 2 stations have moved together in lock step the past few books.

Ratings: The rise of the Spanish formats

Don Day | February 4, 2004

Both KJHY (Spanish contemporary) and KWEI (Spanish AC) saw big gains. While still a small fraction of the whole, their is BIG growth here.

Ratings: Never thought I’d see THIS day

Don Day | February 4, 2004

KGEM beat KJOT. Say that again, this time a bit different… J-105 lost to K-GEM.

Wow.

This trend isn’t that impressive, however you’ll see KJOT’s diminishing returns.

Ratings: The X factor

Don Day | February 4, 2004

KQXR continues it’s dominance as the number one rocker in the Valley. It’s down slightly from spring, but year-to-year they are up. They are in the number 2 position in this book.

Ratings: Where have all the ACers gone?

Don Day | February 4, 2004

Remember when KCIX K-106 was the number one station in the market? Remember when Lite 108 was a powerhouse?

No more. While KXLT had a good book (up 1.4 points), KCIX did not. They fell 1.1. They had better numbers with Steve & Steph/Melissa.

Ratings: Monster & Sunny in trouble

Don Day | February 4, 2004

I understand why the Impact Radio/Locally Owned folks brought back the Monster. However, you have to seriously question that decision. The Peak was given just one book under AGM ownership. It went from a .6 in Fall ‘02, to a 1.3 in Spring ‘03, back to a .6 in the latest book. KTPZ was FINALLY getting some traction (and I’ll admit I personally liked the Peak format).

You can’t go home again.

Sunny had the exact same problem, with the exat same numebrs (.6, 1.3, .6).

Hope the Twin Falls market is doing better…
