Mix to give away cheap gas

Don Day | March 31, 2004

KCIX will offer up a promotional staple for April Fool’s day.

They will give away cheap gas between 6 and 9 – $1.069 a gallon (wouldn’t $1.059 be better?).

The promotion will be at some Stinker Station — to be announced at 6am.

Brad Rot Roen Wyler married… on TV

Don Day | March 31, 2004

It aired at 2:30 this afternoon on TLC if you missed it.

KTVB did a story on the show today.

Here’s the page for the episode.

Brad has also been on Pyramid… about a dozen times. He won 10k recently. Word is he and Donny O. are tight. OK… maybe not.

Am I the only one that thinks it’s funny that the no news anchor was the subject of a news story today?

Notes

Don Day | March 30, 2004

- KZMG still has a paid spot with Jayar, Big Boy & The Fox running — for Right Size smoothies. Obviously not much can be done about it, but…

- Nate still pretty quiet on the air thus far. He’s only doing a few hits per hour. So far so good. Will note that the Hot 9 at 9… er Magic Interactive 9@9 didn’t start until 9:07 last night. In fact, the top of the hour hit, and they played another song before getting to the countdown. You used to be able to set your watch to the start time.

- The rumors on where Erica will land are flying fast and furious… KIZN producer rumored among others.

- The comments threads heave been pretty interesting, if you’re not reading them — you might start.

- The times of the comments can reveal much about who the poster may be

- “In the know” wasn’t too happy I edited his/her post about the Fox/Nate story. Probably too worried about my own rear… don’t look for heavy editing of comments henceforth (unless it’s plain libelous or contains profanity… then it will just be deleted.

- You’ll also find more about who is rumored to land at Magic Mornings in the comments threads.

- Someone wonders where the morning job at KZMG was posted. Be interesting to see the EEO report for that position.

- Magic has been pushing people to their website for a number of things all day today. A big picture of Erica dominates the front page. Both Fox & Bambi are listed under the “on air now” drop down.

- Valentine is the longest running full-time talent at Magic. He’s been there about a year.

Mikey & Smooch finding a groove

Don Day | March 29, 2004

The night guys at the other Boise popper are starting to gel. The show is VERY interactive… tons and tons of listeners on the air — a good forumla for a pop station targeting the teen set at night.

Wherefore art thou Nate (Dog)

Don Day | March 29, 2004

I’ve been listening for about an hour. I’ve heard Nate do 3 drops. That’s quite low for a pop station.

That sounds odd

Don Day | March 29, 2004

The KZMG morning show’s Jayar & Big Boy just sliced “The Fox” off the voiceover on their promos. It sounds hideous.

KZMG night changes

Don Day | March 29, 2004

Bambi’s gone. He’s been replaced by our old friend Nate (who apparantely is a dog, or so he keeps saying).

We’ll assess soon.

Also, as rumored in the comment thread before, Erica Fox has left KZMG. It sounds as though Fox was let go – but that’s not clear yet. It’s also reported that a replacement is coming in by way of Charlotte, NC.

And yes, we spend waaaay too much time talking about Magic on this site.

Fox to appear on TV

Don Day | March 28, 2004

KZMG’s Erica Fox will soon pop up on local TV screens. That’s all I can share for now. Except this: Fox won’t be on Fox… Hmmmm.

KIDO bolsters Beck

Don Day | March 23, 2004

KIDO is running a billboard campaign promoting Glenn Beck’s afternoon syndi-fest. The location I noticed was the very high profile Connector entrance coming out of downtown.

Whateva’ happened to….

Don Day | March 22, 2004

“Scooter B.” be PD, g.

Former KZMG night guy and music director Scooter B. Macray (well, at least, that’s what Mike Kasper named him) is now program director at KUJ-FM in the the Tri-Cities of Washington state (near his home town, if I’m not mistaken). Scoot detoured through Buffalo, New York to the Citadel-owned CKEY Wild 101 before bouncing back to the NW.

Scoot was recently written up here.

Things that makes you go hmmmmm

Don Day | March 22, 2004

Overheard on the streets of downtown Boise:

Random person: Hey man, I’m going to be doing radio
Citadel night guy: really?
Random person: Yeah, I’m doing Boise Hawks games
Citadel night guy: really?
Random person: Yeah, for KTIK
Citadel night guy: really?

Plus: was Bambi almost named Thumper? And is it just me — or does Erica Fox like cheesecake? Mmmmm… cheesecake.

Ponderings.

Idaho Talks re-Live

Don Day | March 22, 2004

A pair of posters clue us in to the deal with Idaho Talks Live. It spent nine long days off the air after an issue with KTRV’s microwave dish at Deer Point. The show hit TV again on Friday.

E-mail marketing: smart

Don Day | March 22, 2004

I think I’m signed up for every station’s e-mail list. Some use them others don’t. KIZN & KRVB (among others) send a weekly newsletter. KZMG sends occasional “hey – we’re going to be giving tix to this concert away soon” notes. Others seem not to send anything anymore (I can’t remember getting a note from KSAS in more than a year).

If you can build a good list of listeners — this is a great way to connect with the audience. Any thoughts?

Sort of weird

Don Day | March 19, 2004

My TiVo decided to tape Idaho Talks Live earlier this week for me. I pulled it up and instead got 2 hours of Headline News. They had a preproduced billboard saying technical difficulties meant no ITL on KTRV. Is this a regular thing?

Chart: KIZN v. KQFC

Don Day | March 17, 2004

You might find THIS interesting:

These are 12+ numbers.

Oh good God… not 2+, 12+. Slower fingers… slower.

More on the Q

Don Day | March 17, 2004

I’ve now had a chance to listen to the “new” Big 98 today. It does seem a bit more focused on young country — but I’ll admit that my country music knowledge is very limited, so it’s hard for me to make that call.

Now for the flip side of the coin from those in the know:
–The Big 98 gives them some new opportunities for branding — add “Big 98″ to “The Q” and you have more open doors than before.
–The new voice talent is a “return” to a more aggressive sound — after going soft for the past year. I’m told this was a corporate mandate.
–The station has dropped much of the gold that corporate had asked them to put in — and are skewing more current.

My only question: KQFC was #6 12+ in the last book — and were only off by about a point. Will this “evolution” of sorts help or hurt?

I also heard several mentions of “Idaho Country” today — so it seems possible that they aren’t completely dumping that image.

The Big 98? Seriously?

Don Day | March 16, 2004

KQFC is no longer Idaho Country. Now they’re the “The Big 98 KQFC.” Yeah.

They’ve got the “Continuous Country Favorites” thing going on… No jingles right now — new voice talent. The imaging includes strange laser-sounding-stuff worked in.

Missing Dave & KJ a bit?

Classic

Don Day | March 8, 2004

Not radio… or even Idaho. Just classic: DirecTV is suing OJ Simpson for pirating their signal.

Idaho Hispanic radio pioneer dies

Don Day | March 8, 2004

I missed this — it’s from last month. However, it’s of note.

Roman Reyna hosted shows on a number of stations throughout the state. He became known to listeners as the “King of the Brown Sound.”

Reyna was active in the Hispanic community — emceeing a number of Cinco de Mayo and other events. Reyna helped KJHY’s Ricardo Quilantan get his start.

In an Idaho Press Tribune story, Quilantan said Reyna never rested on his laurels —

“He wouldn’t just let us do a mediocre job,” Quilantan said, “We had to do things as a family and then go in and do it better the next day.”

Learn more about Reyna from the Idaho Press Tribune.

Spud Brothers as pimps

Don Day | March 7, 2004

Well… sorta. KJOT’s running a contest to hook up a listener (a male listener apparantely) with a date to the Metalica show.

They don’t say where they are getting the girl… hmmm. The Torch?

Anyway… the winner will also win backstage passes to he show.

KTPZ’s new voice is old

Don Day | March 7, 2004

Pretty sure that the new imaging voice is actually the same one used before they dumped the monster and got a Point.
