Music… on the radio?… impossible!

Don Day | May 31, 2004

What a pleasant Monday morning commute. Not only were there about three cars on the road — I actually heard some tunes blaring from my radio. It was nice. If only every day could be Memorial day.

It’s about a 10 minute drive to work for me — one day last week on a certain unmentioned Boise station, they morning show folk talked the entire time. I longed for a commercial break…

A new look

Don Day | May 28, 2004

Spruced things up — added a search function (finally), and reworked the comments system. Sadly, all the old comments had to be swept away, but this system is much more robust and stable.

UPDATE: The new comments system may be more robust, but the feature set sucks. So we’re going back to the original system (which means all the old comments are again available).

More on the 50kw CP

Don Day | May 19, 2004

Had a little time to dig around. A friend helped me find the AM DB query on FCC.GOV.

A little cross-referencing to MapQuest shows that tower for the proposed station is on Kuna Mora between Curtis & Pleasant Valley.

The CP is for 50kw in the daylight on 1100Khz, and a paltry 6.3kw at night.

The details here.

Interesting note: Someone named Robert Coombs applied for a very similar CP for the same frequency in 2000, it was dismissed in 2001.

We’ll keep you up to date.

More AM’s on the way?

Don Day | May 17, 2004

Our friends at Utah Radio News tipped us off to a possibly interesting development — an application for a 50kw AM frequency in the Boise Valley.

I’d link to the FCC filing, but FCC.gov gives me a headache (I couldn’t find it).

Call somewhere…

Don Day | May 17, 2004

I keep hearing the Magic Morning Show’s “Call Somewhere You Don’t Work and Quit” bit.

Kind of makes me wish they’d call somewhere they DO work and quit.

OK, I don’t actually mean that — just going for the cheap laugh :). The show’s good — I promise!

Battle of the night time all stars

Don Day | May 17, 2004

OK, Ian, Nate (Dog) and Smooch/Mikey have had their chance to prove themselves… who’s gellin’?

You sound off below — my analysis: Smooch and Mikey have the 10-16 females locked up; Nate’s got the 16-20 year old girlies — and Ian picks up the boys in the same demo.

The 20-somethings don’t get much of a chance until Loveline comes on at 11. A shame. Ian/Bambi is the strongest of the three. Nate’s doing a pretty decent show — but the sexual crap gets old after a while. The other night he was trying to get ‘all the hot girls to instant message’ him, but of course, ‘eighteen plus only.’ Yuck. He doesn’t say “your boyfriend Nate Dogg” anymore — thank goodness.

Then there’s Smooch & Mikey. Just over a month ago, I noted that they seemed to be gelling. And many of you didn’t agree. Now I’m back up on the fence. Smooch carries the show, and Mikey just throws in a word or two, with very little acknowledgement from Troy. Weekender Matty was filling in last Thursday — and was valiantly trying to contribute, but Smooch couldn’t seem to get along with his side-kick of the night. A little collaboration would go a LONG way here. And did I here right — do they have a producer? Does KSAS really need to pay three people at night?

Ian’s trying — and succeeding mostly. His off-beat humor seems to fit better on the X, and the overall tone of the station.

First comes love… then comes Ian

Don Day | May 17, 2004

We’re on a bit of an X kick here, aren’t we?

Did you all pick up your copy of Thrive (THR!VE) Magazine? If you did, you saw a GIANT spread with our friend Bambi — looking for love in all the wrong places (unless you consider a half-baked Boise Weekly/Sunset Magazine rip-off a good place to look for Cupid).

The article is a fun read — no love match though.

Maybe Bambi will meet up Princess Fiona (before she got all… Ogre).

Pay up in Payette

Don Day | May 17, 2004

I’ve become a big fan of Loveline (airing live each night on the Westwood One Radio Network — and airing in Boise on KQXR). It’s always engaging — and a great complement to the X’s lineup.

As you’ve all figured out by now — I’m the king of the nitpick. The pre-recorded legal ID customized for the X with Dr. Drew & Adam drives me crazy.

Adam Corrola says K-Q-X-R Pay-it Boise. We all know by now that stations don’t have to even attempt to serve their city of license, but it would be great if they could at least pronounce it right.

My $0.02.

KRVB gets a new voice… or do they?

Don Day | May 17, 2004

Some of KRVB’s imaging has changerd — a new male voice. The current male/female pair seems to be on the way out — but they are still all over the air.

Speaking of imaging talent — who is doing KTIK right now? Not my favorite…

The X throws ‘Throw Back’ out

Don Day | May 17, 2004

Throwback lunch is now “The Throw Back Show.” Not entirely sure why they made the move. Every time I heard the title before, all I could think was “mmmm… throwing up my lunch.”

Yeah, it’s that slow right now.

Mea Culpa X2

Don Day | May 13, 2004

Because I’m stupid — I turned off the comments form by mistake. It’s back.

Also, I beat up on spelling in Nate Dogg’s bio on KZMG.com — while in the very next post I spelled Odd with an extra D. As a friend reminded me — those in glass houses, and all that…

Putting the ‘dip’ in diploma(t)

Don Day | May 10, 2004

Sorry Nate (Dog), but someone needs to proof-read your bio.

I grew up in the Tampa Bay area (Clearwater). After I Gadubated High Skool, (yes, I got my diplomat)…

Maybe someone was trying to be funny — but it doesn’t play ‘funny,’ it plays ‘illiterate.’

It’s a funny read: See it here

Odd

Don Day | May 9, 2004

From KZMG’s e-newsletter:

Thursday mornings – 7:45am – Jayar, Big Boy and Baylie reveal what time that Jim Allen will announce the Thousand Dollar Thursday song of the day ..

Jim Allen announces the song of the day AND when Valentine will play it ..

When Valentine plays the Thousand Dollar Song Of The Day .. .. Caller 93 at 424-9300 wins $1000 .. ..

So So Simple!!! .. .. All local winners, no exceptions!!

Is that really simple? I have to listen for a time to listen to listen again?

But props: local money to local winners. Sweet.

Spud Brothers again

Don Day | May 6, 2004

Caught Chris & Eddie on Citadel’s KTIK this morning. A lot of the “good to have you back” calls. Lots of talky talky.

Just how many brothers does Chris have?

XM or iPod?

Don Day | May 3, 2004

I’m itching for a gadget. I can’t decide between XM or iPod.

Either one spells bad news for local broadcasters. I am the biggest proponent of localism. And honestly, I’ll probably not cut down on my local radio listening (mostly because of this site) — but, it seems a bad trend for the locals. And hey, I can get the same voice-tracked Clear Channel Kiss & Mix formats… so la te da.

But back to my original question — which should I get?
