Sad

Don Day | June 5, 2004

I first saw the passing of President Reagan today on TV. I left my home very shortly there after — and rolled around the AM dial, thinking I would hear some coverage.

All the so-called “news” stations were running taped programs. Sad.

Wow… that’s a long break

Don Day | June 4, 2004

Taking a gander at yesterday’s MediaBase 24/7 sample hour on All Access.

KZMG

Everday by Britney Spears starts at 9:23
–Break–
Overnight Celebrity by Twista starts at 9:35.

In a span of 12 minutes, the station had one spin. The song’s 3-4 minutes, meaning the break was between 7-8 minutes long. Yikes.

Additionally, Magic runs on an A-B clock (10 songs in a row, break, 2-3 songs, break, 10 songs… etc.) That creates this situation:

9:23 song
–break–
9:35 song
9:39 song
–break
9:53 song

So if you tune in at 9:23, and tune out at 9:53, you hear 3 songs in 30 minutes. During the 9pm hour, KZMG ran 16-18 minutes worth of spots.

KSAS

The Reason by Hoobastank begins at 9:18
–break–
Pieces of Me by Ashlee Simpson begins at 9:28.

The Reason is also 3-4 minutes. So KSAS’s break is roughly 6 minutes. They play three songs, and take another roughly six minute break at about 9:43. Their commercial inventory is about 12 minutes all tolled.

KQXR

The X had about 18 minutes of commercial inventory in the sample hour spread over 2 breaks.

KQFC

The hour begins with a break, ending at about 9:01. They had a pair of roughly 4 minute breaks — for a total of roughly 9 minutes of paid programming, so to speak.

KXLT

Station was in the syndicated Delilah program — not really a fair comparison.

KRVB

Two break format, roughly 8 minutes of spots here as well.

KIZN

A whopping four breaks. First break about 3 minutes, second about 7 minutes, third was about 4, last break was about 4. A total of about 18 minutes spread out over the hour — that’s a lot of clutter. Station played 12 songs in the sample hour.

The (not so daily) buzz

Don Day | June 1, 2004

Seen 1033kissfm.com lately?

Notice the so-called “Daily Buzz” on the right hand side? It’s a little stale. It used to be updated by umm… Krista Lee/Athena/Misty/Micky. Since there’s no female half of the KISS team… Apparently no web team.

I see, I see

Don Day | June 1, 2004

Found this cool new site.

Not a whole lot there so far — but the concept is interesting: a blog about the things that make Boise cool (nice play on the word Boise: Boisee).

Check it out.

Kouba’s cracked

Don Day | June 1, 2004

Dan Kouba (of Thrive Magazine, uh, fame) makes me crazy. Did you read last week’s piece on the Playboy 50 year tour?

Says Danny:

Because while the girls on Playboy’s payroll aren’t whores or porn stars (as local female radio personalities have jealousy said).

Jealous? Really? Daniel, have you met any of the women of Boise radio… most of them don’t have the so-called ‘face for radio.’ But you’d rather just toss in some funny (har har) line to sex up your column, right?

Like the slogan says… pick it up, throw it out…
