PJ on ABC, re: BSU

Don Day | November 27, 2004

Paul J.Paul J. Schneider’s voice was heard during halftime of the Texas-Texas A&M game Friday. The network took a handful of pivotal plays of the season from around the country and matched the ESPN or ABC footage to the local radio announcer. PJ’s call was the pivotal moment in the BSU-BYU game when BYU’s last second salvo failed, and BSU won the game.

I hate voicetrack lies

IdahoRadio | November 26, 2004

San Diego resident Geoff Alan is making stuff up again.

On his voicetracked mid-day show on KSAS-FM today, he said he just talked to Jenn, who is running on the blue turf to work off those extra pounds.

Yeah, that’s not true. I would be surprised if Alan is even working today.

And I thought this was a no-no.

Quoting a lengthy Wall Street Journal story from February 2002 about CC, KSAS & Mr. Alan:

He typically greets Boise listeners by using names taken from e-mails he gets from Boise, or sometimes from San Diego callers. Then, he puts them in a situation using a real local place drawn from his research. Sometimes he does a bit less, though. After greeting “Dawn,” who “is stuck at work today,” he admitted off the air that she was “somebody I just made up right now.”

In response to those activities, and Alan’s interview with the Evan & Jaron duo that he made sound a little too local — a CC exec said “this would be an example of a personality being a little too creative.”

So why is it still happening?

Voicetracking is voicetracking. Everyone has their own thoughts on it. It’s a reality that’s not going away. However, I take issue with blatant lying to the listener.

Marquee events

Don Day | November 24, 2004

Rolling down Blue Lakes in TF the other day… and noticed a ton of business signs promoting radio stations. Almost every other one it seemed.

“KIDO”
“KIDO580.com”

He he. Ha ha. HOOOO.

IdahoRadio | November 23, 2004

KQXRKQXR’s airstaff has a funny little promo right now. It’s a sort of takeoff on NBC’s The More You Know spots.

The kids tell listeners about Rate the X Rock, and the KQXR feedback phone line.

The number is 941-5425. Which, as Melissa points out, spells ZIP-LICK.

Dan McColly caps the spot in pitch perfect tone… then you hear the staff prodding Dan to “say Will Hung.” “No.” “Say it.” “No.”

It’s been running for a while now — but it’s a great example of a unique approach to an otherwise mundane promo.

Hannitized.

Don Day | November 21, 2004

SeanWell, the state of Idaho has been officially Hanitized.

Saturday was a big day for KBOI. It started bright and early with Fox Newser Sean Hannity’s visit to Boise, followed up by the live broadcast of BSU & La. Tech — and a live basketball game that night. Whew.

Hannity drew a huge crowd — and I will go out on a little limb here: I think his visit will give KBOI the boost it needs to beat KIDO in the fall book. You can quote me on that later (when I’m proven wrong).

During the BSU-LT game, Jeff Caves praised everyone at “KBOI and the Citadel brass” for all the work they’ve done on the Hannity visit, and specifically mentioned Andrew Paul.

The speech drew all the recognizable GOP faces from the state — including Governor Kempthorne.

Oldies gets new

Don Day | November 21, 2004

A close friend of Idaho Radio writes in to let me know that KLTB is on a mission of sorts.

The station has gone to the 12 songs in a row fomula (presumably A-B clocked). They have also picked up a new Voice of God.

I love it when stations fight back!

Both KJOT & KKGL had their birds inflated at Dennis Dillon. So nice to see competitors flip their birds together.

An infusion

IdahoRadio | November 11, 2004

Jodie Stewart spent some time in his old stomping grounds of the Magic Morning Show just before 10am today. He and intern “Heartbreaker” had a celebrity impression faceoff. It was funny and good radio. Big Boy & Baylie mostly were in the background and laughed. Jayar was sick today.

Maybe Jodie should rejoin the show… he brings that “Tommy” quality that works so well with Mike & Kate.

Just shoot me

Don Day | November 9, 2004

KBOI has a new newsreader. Ken Weaver has been appearing for the past few days on KBOI first news (and KTRV). He has a great voice — and fairly smooth delivery. If he is writing his own copy, he is doing a decent job of it.

He did the 9am hour Monday during Idaho Talks Live (Deb did the first part of the show). He had some trouble with KBOI’s extensive intros and outros (k-b-o-i news time is nine-oh-three, i’m so-and-so in the k-b-o-i c-b-s 24 hour news center…) But nothing terrible. At the end, he tripped on “KBOI,” and when finished, could be seen off-the-air (but still on camera) pretending to shoot himself on the air.

Another note about KBOI: A friend of Idaho Radio tells me that they ran Curtis Sawyer’s election night update every hour between 10pm and 4am each day last week. The same update. Repeatedly.

Live and learn.

OK, I’ll admit it. I completely missed this:

Don Day | November 7, 2004

70s Saturday Night is no more on KXLT. When it happened? Dunno.

It is of note that KTHI is now programming a syndicated 70s program (The 70s with Steve Goddard)on Saturday at 7pm.

Maggie moves

Don Day | November 7, 2004

KTVB-TV’s Maggie O’Mara has taken her morning news drops from KSAS to sister KLTB. O’Mara continued doing news hits for KISS for a few weeks after Kraddick swept in — by CC management decided she fit better with the local Greg Williamson on Kool 104.3

The Q simplified

Don Day | November 7, 2004

KQFC-FMKQFC seems to be cutting down on what I called “brand clutter” back in the warm days of August. They are focusing in on the new-ish “#1 for New Country & The Legends.”

They are also using “The Big 98″ as an identifier — but overall it’s a much cleaner approach.

KTIK: off target

Don Day | November 6, 2004

A friend was listening to KTIK the other day when he heard something odd at the top of a spot: the phrase “hey ladies.”

The ad was for the Pleasure Boutique. Why would it target females? KTIK is targeted at men, and listened to by mostly men. I’m sure that money could be better spent — or at least a better targeted ad could run on the sports outlet.

IdahoRadio | November 5, 2004

About J105?

Never more than three commercials between you and more classic rock that rocks. And never more than 3 songs between you and more spots that don’t rock quite as much.
