KJHY changes hands

Don Day | January 14, 2005

AllAccess and R&R report that Spanish-language broadcaster Bustos Media has snapped up Boise’s KJHY (102 FM) — in a deal valued at $3.2 million.

Control is set to transfer from First Western on March 9 with an LMA. Bustos will use it’s “La Gran D” format on the station — based on new sister KDUT/Salt Lake.

From R&R: “The Boise area will continue to experience dramatic growth rates during the next decade,” (company CEO Amador) Bustos said. “We are delighted to have assumed the management of this great station, which enhances our commitment to the Northwest region and to Idaho Hispanic community in particular.”

KJHY pulled a 1.3 in the last book — near the bottom of the pile, but ahead of both KTPZ & KISY.

Unknown is the status of AM-sister KNJY.

(Thanks Jim)

So for everyone that got stiffed in the paycheck by Steve Sumner over the years, now would probably be a good time to call him and get your money!!!

It IS Sumner that still owned that signal, right? What a piece of work!

Steve’s been spending $$$ on the stations equipment lately. Just put in a like-new (factory re-built) top of the line FM transmitter.

I bet he was asked to pay cash up front! I can remember when the location of the studio’s would change every couple months because of not paying rent. I think it was KTVB that did a story on him (chasing him on camera into the building) because he didn’t pay employees and whatnot. Thank God I never had to work for him back in the day… I still have friends who, even though they had a judgement against Sumner, never got paid what they were owe’d from him.

When did he drop the KKIC calls from the AM station? Is it still southern gospel?

I worked for SS for a while back in the late 80’s/early 90’s…when it became apparent that paychecks weren’t forthcoming, I organized everyone to go to the Labor Board en mass.

As far as I know, we all got our money. I know I got mine!

Interesting side note, SS tried to bully me down once, asked me what I was gonna do if he didn’t pay me, go to the Labor Board? At that point, I already had. He started to get angry and went to stand up to me…I suppose being a 6′1″, 225lb former Marine is what kept him from actually leaving his seat once I stood up quicker than he did!

    Wimp!

Sorry to hear he’s still breathing, hoped he’d have been taken care of by now.

I second Ken’s remarks. I never worked for the man, but I had a run in with him that left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. I went to KJHY to visit my friend Jesus, who was programming the station, and purchase some ads for an upcoming promotion we were going to have in the Magic Valley. On my way up to the studios, I was accompanied by a friend and her son. Steve Sumner exchanged pleasantries with me, but when he discovered that my friend had a Mexican accent, he told her and her son that they were not welcome in the building and to “get their asses out of there!” I promptly told him that if he was going to discriminate like that, he’d better send me packing too! He did and I never purchased the ads. Mind you he was making money from an Hispanic format at the time!
