Cuppa’ joe, and a couple of pictures

Don Day | January 5, 2005

IdanhaIf you find yourself at Dawson Taylor coffee downtown this month, look up at the walls.

You’ll see some amazing photos of Boise, taken by someone with a name many of you will likely recognize.

Deck the halls with moldy websites

Don Day | January 5, 2005

KZMG’s Jayar, Big Boy & Baylie had Santa hats on in their picture for the holidays.

The hats are gone, but Big Boy is still there.

Note to Citadel web folks: Big Boy does not work here anymore.

Silly Statesman

Don Day | January 5, 2005

I was lucky enough to be in Memphis for the Liberty Bowl last week.

The game was great — thrilling — amazing.

But something has been bugging me. The Idaho Statesman reported the BSU crowd at 3,000 — then chided fans for “only” sending 3,000 fans.

I know the Statesman was outgunned in Memphis (just a reporter and photographer, while channel 7 had six people) — but just throwing out “facts” with no basis in reality is dangerous. Not sure if the paper’s reporter every actually LOOKED at the stands — or was at the parties on Beale — or traveled with the orange wave — but it was very obvious there was more than 3,000 people.

(And I’m not the only one)

A KTPZ rant

Don Day | January 2, 2005

From the mailbag…

AJ writes:

I’m sorry if I sound like i’m bitching but i really wish I could trade KTPZ for KZMG… Their programming as of late has been driving me up the wall…

Over and Over – Nelly/Tim McGraw
My Boo – Usher/Alicia Keys
Breakaway – Kelly Clarkson
Drop it like its hot – Snoop Dog/Pharrell
Lose My Breath – Destinys Child
1, 2 step -Ciara/Missy Elliot

Thats 6 of the top 13 songs in the US… Somehow I managed to stay up for most of last night counting… in a 6 hour period, Over and Over was played 8 times, My Boo was played 7 times, Breakaway 4 times, Drop it like its hot 6 times, Lose my breath 5 times and 1, 2 step 8 times.. It seems 2 of these and a random top40 hit… then back to two more of these…

Over and over again, while it is basically a 30 second loop of the same damn song, is like a broken record… Just like our “Top *40*” stations in the valley… KSAS isn’t much better LOL

The triumph of syndication over live & local

Don Day | January 2, 2005

Ugh.

I was having a discussion about radio with co-workers the other day. Most of them did not know I was involved with this site.

Someone made the point that “Kid Kraddick is so much better than those people on Magic 93. They just aren’t funny.”

I tried to make the “well, KK is produced out of state… and it’s bad… and evil… and not live or local.”

So? The show is produced well, interesting – fun to listen to.

The competition on KZMG? Not so much. Whan Jayar started on the evening shift, his show was well produced, interesting – and perfectly aimed at its target.

The morning show? Bleck. Baylie’s not funny. Jayar always seems tired. Big Boy is… well he’s gone (side note: heard him in Memphis this past week. He’s a better night jock).

Magic’s had some good morning shows — and some not so good. Somehow Mike & Kate did what Steve & Steph could not — moved their fan base to KCIX, and then improved upon it. Maybe the fact that they didn’t sit on the bench for 4 months had something to do with that.

Can KZMG do something original and new — or will another cog be plugged in the machine… destined to be the same old thing.

I will go out on a flimsy limb and make a prediction: KSAS will beat KZMG overall and in key demos during morning drive. So will KCIX. In total day, KZMG will beat KSAS — just barely. KCIX will reign supreme.
