Ticker|More worser

Don Day | February 12, 2005

OK, I’ve found something worse than voice-tracking. Seattle’s KBKS-FM just reuses entire segments — and pretends they are live. The station’s night jock sounds like he’s doing the weekend afternoon shift live – but I heard an identical listener call two Saturday’s in a row. And I don’t even listen that much. Shady.

Ticker|On the job

Don Day | February 12, 2005

KQFC’s new PD is on the job (and has been for about a month). Kevin Anderson comes from Rooster 106 in Columbus, GA. What a great time to be a PD at that station…

Ratings|AM radio: the haves & have nots

Don Day | February 7, 2005

On the older band — Boise has two classes. The big-number news/talk stations — and the low-number “others.”

KBOI & KIDO are almost always near the top of the crop — while KGEM, KTIK, KFXD & their ilk ride along near the bottom.

A former co-worker tried to sell me on the rumor that one of the AM stations would flip to sports. I still don’t see that logic. KTIK pulls a 1.7. Why would you want to take a higher performing station and fracture the already tiny sports audience? Sure — KTIK may bill well — but I highly doubt this market can sustain two full sports frequencies.

Ratings|Some air back in the popster’s sails

Don Day | February 7, 2005

KSAS-KZMG

KZMG & KSAS both saw some book-to-book improvement (though both are off year-to-year).

KZMG wins this round in the battle — their third win in a row, though KSAS narrowed the gap a tad.

Ratings|KQXR stops the bleeding

Don Day | February 7, 2005

The X is back on the rails. After that nasty fall in the spring, The X perked up — rising 1.9 to land at 5.2. That’s still well below the 7 the station garnered in Fall 2003 — but it’s a far cry from 3.3

KQXR broadened out its brand a little bit (by using the tagline “New Rock & 90s”) and ran several successful ratings stunts.

Ratings|And now… the news

Don Day | February 7, 2005

It’s a long historial trend – KBOI does better in the fall. As long as the station airs Boise State Football, that will likely hold true. With the season BSU had — you’d expect KBOI to trend up.

They did — pulling a 6.4. But KIDO nosed them out — rising .1 from the last book — to beat KBOI by 6/10ths.

Ratings|The country war… again.

Don Day | February 7, 2005

It seems that the only suspense each February and August is “which of the two Citadel country cousins will come out on top this time?”

For the Fall period, KQFC surges ahead of KIZN. The Q only climbed 3/10ths of a point — but KIZN dropped an almost breathtaking 1.3 (only KTHI fell further, dropping 1.5). Still, Kissin’ was able to hold on to the #3 spot — and combined , the two stations hold a whopping 14.

Ratings|Group therapy

Don Day | February 7, 2005

Citadel Communications grabs 3 of the top 5 spots — with KQFC, KIZN & KBOI all pulling in big numbers.

Clear Channel also had a good go of it – grabbing 2 of those top 5. Journal’s best performer was KTHI — taking the #6 position.

Just because it says Mix…

Don Day | February 4, 2005

Mix106 RadioApparently the K-106 of yore brand is so strong — Clear Channel thinks folks are still marking it down in their diaries (even though KCIX became Mix a whopping 6 years ago!)

The station’s Arbitron profile lists K106 AHEAD of the Mix 106 brand.

Tim Allen would be dismayed

Don Day | February 4, 2005

Idaho Radio Buff Ben with an interesting note:

KKMV 92.5 FM/Ammon (near IF) has approved for a power decrease. Yeah.

The station wants to trade it’s class C certification for one of the class A variety.

This is the station’s current pattern:

The change would confine the station to just the area near Burley.

This appears to be part of the big Utah shuffle causing some turmoil in SL.

From Yesterdaysnews at utahradionews.com:

In a counter proposal to a request to add 104.5A to Ammon Idaho (outside of Idaho Falls), Millcreek, 3 Point Media, College Creek (all Devine names) along with Simmons and Rocky Mountain Radio Network have proposed changes to 23 communities in Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. Here’s a brief summary:

KXRV Centerville moves to 105.9C

KOSY Spanish Fork moves to 106.7C

KRAR Brigham City moves to 107.1C and changes City of License to Henefer UT (population 684)

KNJQ Manti is eliminated and MOVED to Kaysville still at 105.1C

KENZ Orem MOVES its City of License to American Fork but stays on 107.5C

KUDD Roy MOVES its City of License to Randolph remaining on 107.9C and will become Randolph’s 2nd station (population 483) with KDUT 102.3C

Oakley will get another vacant channel at 105.5C which will become auction available at some future date.
KUUU at 92.5C2, recently moved from Toole, will downgrade to a class A on the same frequency to help accomodate the above changes.

Additionally, several other Utah stations and CPs will change to facilitate these changes including:

KLCY 105.5C2 at Vernal will move to 96.9C2

KIFX 98.5C2 at Roosevelt will change its City of License to Naples while remaining a C2 at 98.5

Constrution permits for Rangely Colorado (outside Vernal) will change from 106.9C1 to 99.3C1; Huntington from 107.1C2 to 95.3C2 and Wellington from 95.3C3 to 92.5C3.

There were also changes in Evanston, Superior, Kemmerer, Diamondville and Thayne Wyoming to allow for the SL area changes. As for the original request for Ammon Idaho, Millcreek and parties say the NEW first local services to Kaysville, American Fork & Henefer with total population of 42,976 far outweigh the benefits to providing first FM service to Ammon with only a population of 6,187. In essence, Ammon get NOTHING!

Wow…something to ponder. Wonder what will happen to translator and LPs in the SL area with all these proposed changes? To view the mess, see Docket # 04-427 under Ammon Idaho, FM query on the FCC’s Media Bureau website. Good luck!

What’s up?

Zzzz

Don Day | February 4, 2005

We let AllAcces know of Jayar Reed’s job status change last month. AA just now posted the news… and decided not to credit the source.

Sigh.

Don Day | February 1, 2005

OK — I’m getting hammered by Online Poker spam. I unintentionally deleted a handful of legitimate posts. For that I apologize. I couldn’t even tell you what they said, honestly.

Please repost your original items. Definitely not trying to tamp down free speech!
