Citadel Communications and free speech
Don Day | June 6, 2005Citadel Communications Boise has blocked access to IdahoRadioNews.com from its internal computer network. Additionally, the company has warned employees not to post here — or risk termination.
I feel that this site has been quite fair to Citadel (as well as Journal and Clear Channel). Pointing out the good the stations do — and yes, the not-so-good. If Citadel wishes to not allow its employees to access this site, so be it. I will continue to cover them just like I always have — and employees from Journal and Clear Channel may chime in with their 1st amendment-backed thoughts. And, I trust — employees will just check the site from home.
Ah, good ol’ Citadel. Nothing better to worry about I guess.
I think the talkshow host(Shawn-Michale-Bill and Laura) would love to hear that free seech is alive and well at KBOI. Sorry the citaswell boys and girls can’t play at work anymore…
Its a good thing they are worried about the bigger things….that’ll sure help in the ratings.
Isn’t it ironic that people in the *communications* business are trying to keep information from getting to their employees? Pathetic. Besides, isn’t it likely that this will only make the employees who haven’t heard about this site curious to see what all the fuss is about?
I’ll bet they would be pissed if they heard about a local business that had a rule specifically prohibiting its employees from listening to Citadel radio at work.
Yup, that consolidation has really benefited the public, huh?
Just goes to show how management thinks in 2005.
The Says…
“Isn’t it ironic that people in the *communications* business are trying to keep information from getting to their employees? Pathetic.”
That’s EXACTLY what happens in more places than one. Managers putting the old thumb to talent.
Some people are just afraid of the image in the mirror. Citadel obvioulsy is…
This is what happens when you combine inexpereinced management with insecurity. The more constraints that you put on people, the more they long for thier freedom, and the more passionately they will fight for it. A few examles in history…….Nazi Germany…..Soviet Russia. Granted these are extreme examples, but there are many other examples big and small, that show what happens when you start messing with peoples basic rights.
I’d love to see someone get fired and then sue the company for stopping their freedom of speech. That would be cool…..a salesman or night dj getting to own a piece of the company…..I don’t care who you are that’s funny.
Easy to see why turnover at this company is higher than at either citadel or clear channel.
Maybe they just want a new excuse to fire their current employees? At least they’re getting creative.
I’m sure Kevin Godwin and Richy Summers are thinking…”There, That’ll fix um!”
Hey Ray?
WHO!?
Like anyone knows who those people are…
Excuse me while I laugh my ass off now….
It does appear that they are being somewhat reactionary. But I will admit that programming on the only Citadel Station I like is improving. That being KBOI, cause I just don’t like music programming.
I didn’t like the Laura Ingraham show at first, but have now come to enjoy it. What I really appreciate is the news content. For the first time ever in Boise, a station has hired professional news people to come in and deliver real local news. I’m from Dallas, and was used to this. But to see it in a market as small as this is truly impressive. I hope they have good enough sense to keep those guys there.
And I like the new saturday morning show. I have to drive to McCall every Saturday (poor me. hehe) and I listen to that show starting at about 6:30.
I’m about to get back into it full time, and take a job with Emmis. It’s been good being here, though.
Freedom of speech? What the…
The only people who post here are those employed by local radio stations (wich is quite lame if you ask me). If Citadel doesn’t want their employees coming here during business hours, they have that right (they own the computers!!!). If these dorks want to go home and talk about themselves on the internet, well, they have that right too.
Is it our constitutional right to slack off at work? give me a break…
