Silly Citadel

Don Day | July 31, 2005

It has been nearly two months — and the folks at Citadel Communications are still blocked from viewing this site at work. I hear that the rationale being given in the building is that Citadel workers were wasting too much time here. That’s stretching the truth — since they cut off access just hours after someone posted a not-so-nice comment about management.

It is nice to see that you are all checking in from home.

Overachiever

Don Day | July 31, 2005

Stephen RobinsonShuttle Discovery astronaut Stephen Robinson was a morning radio DJ back in the 1970s in Sacramento, California.

Yesterday he was walking in space.

Quoting the AP:

In his early astronaut days, he worked in Mission Control and woke up his colleagues in space by beaming up music. “So you never know where the DJ experience is going to take you,” he said.

(Thanks, Dad)

Umm. Deeds & I agree. Yikes

Don Day | July 29, 2005

Well sorta… Seen his column today?

Pretty much everything in there, you’ve read here. But, sadly… we agree. Except for all the stuff he got wrong (see this comment).

Sigh.

Plus: There are several Idaho-produced Podcasts — including a pair of Sermon Podcasts (one from the Community Church of the Valley — the other from First Baptist), plus something called “Star Garden Moon Watch” which is focused on astrology from a woman in Moscow. “Seattle & Beyond” is a PC on the OR/WA/ID new music scene.

Our old friends over at The Daily Download aren’t in iTunes top 100 any longer. I think it’s a bunch of crap.

Stock watch: Good week.

Don Day | July 29, 2005

Your 401(k) did well this week.

Citadel, Journal and Clear Channel all saw week-over-week gains. Modest gains, but everyone was up.

I’ve seen that before…

Don Day | July 29, 2005

So I’m watching Countdown with Keith Olbermann tonight… when up pops this story about brides racing through the aisles of a Chicago wedding dress store, dashing for a deal.

They’re all wearing shirts with a giant blue circle, with the KISS FM 103.5 emblazoned in yellow and red.

“That’s odd,” I think to myself. “I swear I’ve seen that logo before. But i remember a 3 at the end. Not a 5.” But the story isn’t from Boise… no, it’s from Chicago. “Why would people in Chicago be wearing T-Shirts from a station in IDAHO?”

“Oh wait. It’s like McDonalds. They have them in every city. ”

I feel so much better now.

A new Flava

Don Day | July 28, 2005

DJ Cesar has bounced over to KSAS for “Saturday Night Sessions” with “Tallest DJ” Aaron Traylor.

Cesar used to spin with Scooter B on KZMG for “The Flava” in the same time slot on Magic. It killed the show in October 2003.

The station is billing it as “Interactive,” saying they are allowing listeners to customize the set list.

Find your Remote

Don Day | July 28, 2005

LostRemote OK, I whine and complain about convergence around here (still no Podcasts??). I hope you’ll take a minute to check out LostRemote.com — a site primarily focused on TV folks, but packed with news and cool ideas from around the media — all media. I’ve been a fan of LR for a long time — it’s run by Cory Bergman, the new Director of Digital Media up here at KING/NWCN. Take a peek.

Cool idea

KTSY is hosting a concert today at Roaring Springs — with the artists setting up on the edge of the wave pool. Bob around and listen to some live music… ingenious idea!

Another look at EEO

Don Day | July 24, 2005

Time for our second annual review of the Valley’s EEO files. Unlike last year, all Boise area stations with websites have the EEO files available from the station home page. One station has a problem, but we’ll come back to that.

Clear Channel’s report report is pretty boring — 7 whole jobs filled in the year from May 22 ‘04 to May 23 ‘05.

Journal’s EEO filing seems to have all of its ducks in a row — but is just as bland. No on-air filing in the year May ‘04-May ‘05. Lots of openings on the TV side, but that’s pretty typical.

Citadel had the highest rate of churn over that same May-May period. 14 jobs opened up, with a full half of those – seven – being content positions. KZMG says it found it’s two morning co-hosts from the Idaho Job Service and the “Citadel Intra Company Network.” That network is apparently also where KKGL’s PD, and KBOI’s News Director and News Reporter came from. KQFC’s new PD learned of the job from AllAccess.com, and KTIK’s morning host found out about the position from Idaho Job Service. Not so sure that last one is accurate… but what do I know?

One last Citadel note, KTIK’s report is not compliant. The station has the filing from 2003-2004 online, not the correct 2004-2005 information.

For Locally Owned Radio, one odd little thing jumps out at you: the PD job for KISY opened on 12/20/04, was filled on 1/3/05 — then opened again on 1/20/05.

Update:
Here’s a shocker… KTIK fixed it’s report today.

The “other” best

Don Day | July 22, 2005

Boise Weekly is now casting about for it’s own Best of Boise survey.

Last year Boise State Radio won best FM, KBOI took home AM honors and Ken & Teri grabbed best personalities.

Gonna be a bit harder to stuff the ballot (online at least) — BW is making you register.

Among the candidates: Brad Wyler, “99.1 The Peak,” Big Boy, Jayar & Baylie — and KSL radio???

I have to say I about fell off my chair (it’s a really tall chair… so it would hurt if I had ACTUALLY fallen) when I saw “idahoradionews.com” as a candidate for best local website. It’s right above “idahostatesmand.com”… whatever that is.

Love that Brent Coles is a candidate for “Best Non-Politician who should run for public office.”

Sunny and 95º

Don Day | July 21, 2005

…that’s the forecast for Boise on Saturday.

So why is KTIK cancelling the car wash lather-fest set for Saturday?

I’m told the Ticket Chick car wash has been cancelled due to a lack of… Ticket Chicks.

Who’s going to wash Chris’s car now?

KQFC gives away a makeover. Sorta

Don Day | July 20, 2005

Am I the only one that doesn’t see much difference from the before and after photos

Maybe she should have entered The Eagle’s backyard contest. At least you get a cool rock with your name on it.

OK, I’ll admit it

Don Day | July 20, 2005

I wish my blog posts were half as well writen written as the stuff Dan McColly does for the JBG websites.

Like this from RiverInteractive.com:

In describing relativity, Einstein said “Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT’S relativity.”

In parallel with this principle, we’re about to shorten your commute (again) with another week of the proven popular & definitely escapist “Car Concerts.” Read on – and we’ll peel back the blanket on what’s become our new favorite 5 o’clock feature.

Update: I don’t think I’ll ever achieve my goal if I can’t spell “written.”

Nate Dogg

He’s not the only DJ to have issues with law enforcement recently…

The circus

Don Day | July 20, 2005

KZMG’s morning show page is an odd collection of… stuff.

- A picture of a meth addict
- What’s in hot dogs
- A guy on a toilet seat
- Old celebrity photos
- A story about male PMS

What demographic are they going for exactly?

What’s up at the X?

Don Day | July 20, 2005

Ahh the frustration of not living in Boise and running this site.

Anywho… I got a strange note from someone tearing me to shreds for not posting the news that “Brian” had left the KQXR morning show. Last I checked the three principals on the show are named Byl, Jeremy and Melissa. Maybe I’m crazy.

KQXR has dropped all staff names from this page (cache) – though Big J’s name appears on the site’s front page as part of a contest. My e-mails digging for comment have come back with “no comment.” Is Byl off the show? Does this have anything to do with a recent “event?”

Come one… come all…

Don Day | July 15, 2005

KTIK’s Ticket Chicks are holding a car wash next Saturday. Proceeds benefit the “BSU Summer Scholarship Fund.” The washing starts at 12:30 at Econo Tune ‘n’ Lube on Chinden.

And somehow, the station is already looking for its 2006 ‘team.’

Details here.

Delilah in court

Don Day | July 15, 2005

The Seattle Times reports that Delilah Rene sued her business partners in Texas this week — saying the group tried to steal money from the radio star. She also claims they blackmailed her, threatening to expose a romantic relationship if she didn’t go for a buyout deal.

Rene also says that a principal in the group, Neal Hail, sent her emails that became increasingly pornographic.

Delilah After Dark is based in Seattle, and heard on well more than 200 stations in the US and Canada, including Boise’s KXLT.

Encouraging

Don Day | July 15, 2005

KTSY is working with Albertsons on “Operation Encouragement.” People can purchase a care package at any Valley Albertsons store, then contact KTSY for the name of a soldier stationed overseas. KTSY has set a goal of 3,000 soldiers adopted this month alone.

“We work hard to show that we live and work in the Treasure Valley, and we care about the people that live here, ” KTSY PD Jerry Woods said via e-mail.

I’ve also added the station to our list at right.
