Stock Watch: Citadel’s good week

Don Day | August 14, 2005

Wow. All that positive ratings news in Boise must’ve really helped Citadel’s stock this week (haha… yeah right).

CDL finished the week up about 8 percent, leading the three radio groups with major Boise operations. Clear Channel ended up less than 2 percent — while Journal finished the week down ever so slightly. (chart)

CCU’s positive finish is despite some disappointing earnings news — the mega-caster saw quarterly profit dip 13% from the same period a year ago. The company plans to spin out its Outdoor business with a $350 million IPO.

The 94.9 FM Sunday curse

Don Day | August 14, 2005

I just listened to The Other Studio on KRVB this evening. Tim & Mike’s discussion/debate about music — both local and national — is localism at it’s best. Especially when they don’t agree (I’m with you, Tim, on that weird chick with initials for a name).

At the end of this week’s edition, Tim said something like “we’ll finish up with so and so… we’ll se you next week in The Other Studio.”

But the song by so-and-so never played. Cue 5 minutes of dead air.

Good to see Sundays on 94.9 FM still have that good ol’ sound.

Run while you stil have a chance!

Don Day | August 14, 2005

I noticed that Jared: The Galleria of Jewelers is about to pop up in the old GAP location by the mall next to JBX.

Note to AEs: fight for this account.

Note to folks who do a live shift: get out while you can.

Jared has a location or 2 in Seattle… and they are easily one of the area’s top radio advertisers. You’ll be singing THAT’S JARED!!! in your sleep in six months… trust me.

RATINGS: Top “ten” 25-54 stations

Don Day | August 12, 2005

Today’s Idaho Statesman has 25-54 Boise market ratings numbers. The Statesman’s header says “Top 10 finishers in 25-54…” Except it only provided nine entries. So to station number ten… whoever you are… sorry that you aren’t included… the paper can’t count.

KKGL 10.3
KIDO 6.6
KJOT 6.6
KTHI 6.3
KIZN 5.9
KQXR 5.6
KXLT 5.6
KCIX 4.3
KRVB 3.8

The headline here is KKGL’s incredible number — much like those 12+ numbers.

As part of the previously announced KBOI/ABC deal — Paul Harvey has a new Boise outlet.

You’ll hear Morning News at 7:17am — the Noon News at… well… noon — and The Rest of the Story at the odd time of 6pm.

RATINGS: KTSY in top 10

Don Day | August 11, 2005

The nice folks over at KTSY were nice enough to respond to my request for the station’s ratings data (since it doesn’t appear in the usual sources.

The news is good for the non-commercial Christian station. It scored its highest rating since the spring of 2003 — landing in the top 10, ahead of a slew of commercial stations (KBOI, Kiss, Mix, Magic, the River, Kool…)

KTSY jumped 20% fall to spring — to a 4.7 rating.

RATINGS: Ups & Downs

Don Day | August 10, 2005

Biggest gainer: KKGL… by a WIDE margin. The Eagle saw 12+ growth of 91% from fall to spring — from a 3.7 to an astonishing 7.1. The station was sitting in 12th place — it’s rocketed to the number two spot. Just amazing. The year to year number is a still steller 69% rise.

It’s not the only rocker enjoying gains — rival KJOT jumped 27% F to S — to a 4.7. (I take back all that Jack FM stuff I said :) ).

KIZN actually saw the second highest growth number — from a 6.6 to 7.5 F to S. Year to year the station shows a slight loss (it’s kinda hard to top a 7.9 these days).

Biggest drop: KBOI took it in the gut, shedding a full third of its audience F to S. This is a fairly normal occurrence — since BSU doesn’t play football in the spring (sadly). However, the station also lost 18 percent year to year. It’s now sitting with a 4.3. This was also the first spring book without Dr. Drew Harold’s local programming in the afternoon.

Citadel sister KZMG also lost serious ground — nearly 30%, from a 4.8 to a 3.4 Fall to Spring. KZMG also slid from it’s 3.8 in Spring ‘04.

RATINGS: Hi, we’re from Citadel. We’d like to sell you some spots

Don Day | August 10, 2005

All those Citadel employees who wasted spent all that time on this site during the spring book must have accomplished something — since Citadel Boise cleaned up in the ratings race.

The Citadel group combined for 30.4 rating points — CC had 25.9 and Journal had 21.6. If you handicap KCID-AM out of the sample, Citadel had an average of 5 share points per station, Journal 4.32 and Clear Channel 4.316667 (yes.. it’s that close).

RATINGS: KDJ… who?

Don Day | August 10, 2005

OK, so I’ve been waiting to use that headline for months. I’ll admit it.

KDJQ-AM isn’t on the stations list yet — though it did launch just a few months ago. We’ll see if its on the list come Fall.

RATINGS: Español no una poder de la mercado

Don Day | August 10, 2005

Spanish isn’t a market force yet. KWEI technically had the biggest drop of any station — 40%, from a 1.0 to a 0.6 (F to S).

Bustos Media’s stations have failed to chart so far.

RATINGS: TF stations flat in Boise

Don Day | August 10, 2005

KISY “Sunny 100.7″ is stuck in… uh… point-sixth gear — notching a .6 rating for the 3rd book in a row. Sister KTPZ went down 1/10th in Boise.

Remember KTPZ’s 3.8 days?

RATINGS: AM increases

Don Day | August 10, 2005

The “lesser” AM stations all did well — KTIK is now over the 2.0 mark for the first time since spring 2003, with a 23% F to S improvement. KFXD netted a 2.2 — a 29% F to S increase. KGEM was up a tenth of a point.

RATINGS: The biggest news of all

Don Day | August 10, 2005

Forget who did what, and which station gained or fell.

Boise is now Arbitron market #108, with 404,000 men, women and children.

Who wants to place bets on when we’ll be a “top 100 market.”

Has a nice shiny ring to it, doesn’t it?

RATINGS: Fox in the hen house?

Don Day | August 10, 2005

KIDO is still the 4th highest rated station in the market, despite losing about 12% of its 12+ audience. How will the Fox News affiliation shape future growth?

RATINGS: What’s old is new again

Don Day | August 10, 2005

KLTB increased 17% year to year — from a 3.5 to a 4.1.

The “heritage” oldies station is still taking a back set to K-Hits however. KTHI was dead flat F to S — at 5.4. Year-to-year, K-Hits lost .8.

RATINGS: I’d rather rawk

Don Day | August 10, 2005

KCIX & KXLT both lost ground book-to-book (though Lite was actually up .2 year-to-year).

With KKGL/KJOT/KQXR adding a total of 7.1 points — someone has to fall. It appears the lighter end of the spectrum (Lite, Mix and the River) saw declines in favor of the harder side.

RATINGS: X marks the spot

Don Day | August 10, 2005

KQXR’s slow rebuild continues — after the dark book that was Spring ‘04. The X crew saw a 25% increase from spring, and a 96% jump from the same period last year. It also solidified its position in the top 5 — with a number three showing.

One trend to watch for in the fall: how will the X morning show changes effect numbers?

RATINGS: Anyone have a Magic parachute?

Don Day | August 10, 2005

KZMG’s ratings slide has extended in to another book.

The pop station dropped to a 3.4 rating — it’s lowest 12+ rating since I began tracking six years ago.

That looks like this:

Granted, the station is just trying to establish a new morning show — but sadly, that seems to be true for every ratings period.

Rival KSAS also lost a bit of ground — but only 5% compared to Magic’s 30%.

The two together look like this:

RATINGS: Where have all the cowboys gone?

Don Day | August 10, 2005

The answer for this book at least… KIZN.

The never ending intra-company battle between KIZN and KQFC continues — and Kissin’ wins another round. The Q lost a point and a half, while Kissin’ picked up 9/10 of a point.

She’s the Cat’s meow

Don Day | August 9, 2005

The Idaho Statesman’s annual poll of all things “Best” in the Treasure Valley is out.

There’s only one radio category — and KKGL’s midday eagle Cat Lee took the title.

“Her midday show mixes a little banter with some tunes, and for Cat, her style is all about having a “comfortable conversation” with her listeners — without being too obtrusive. After all, she knows that most folks are with her to get their rock fix.”

The runners up were Kate McGwire, Mike & Kate and Big J. Sounds like Kate split the vote with herself.

Oh the irony

Don Day | August 9, 2005

From KBOI.com:

16 Schools In Boise Miss The Mark

16 schools in Bise are not meeting expectations for academic improvement. Overall, nine elementary schools, three junior highs and four high schools missed the targets. District officials say some of the reasons include more students in elementary schools were tested this year and the passing mark was raised for math and readin.

Do I even have to say it?

Hi, I’m looking for _____.

Don Day | August 6, 2005

Google is an odd thing. Great, sure… but — odd.

You just punch in whatever it is you want to read about… and there you are: 5 million hits of quasi-useful information.

After the jump, I’ve posted all the search terms people dialed in to reach this site in July.

Number one isn’t a surprise (uhh.. it’s the name of the site); but number two might leave you scratching your head.

My favorites: “big toe” (surprisingly high on the list…. and I don’t want to know why).

Then there’s this trend: “tom collins from ktvb boise idaho,” “tom collins in idaho” “tommy collins radio in idaho” “tom collins clear channel.” Tommy, I will find your Google stalker and bring them to justice.

Someone is trying to find John Miller… someone else is tracking Rich Bryan… some freak clicked on this site for “lyrics including i almost made out with the homecoming queen.” Then “lyrics including where i almost made out with the homecoming queen.” It’s 1985 by Bowling for Soup… now quit calling me.

Some poor soul wants to know why “paul harvey is off kboi.” This is undoubtedly someone from an Arbitron home.

And what the heck is this: “dont make me over mp3 burt bacharach”?

The person who searched for “olbermann kiss” must have been quite disappointed with what he/she/it found.

Sadly, no one searched for dizzle.
