Yah, that is pretty much a no-brainer...I have to admit that is a big risk to take with no promise of return except a busy phone bank... You used to be able to buy a combo station for that kind of money... 2006 will be an interesting year for the business ground and sat radio....-

Codger makes a good point. I too worked at a station that had considered Howard at one point. The price was MUCH too high. I don't know the other details but the price alone was enough to kill it, I was told.

One thing not mentioned about Howard Stern, is not just that people think this area is too conservative, but the cost of his show was prohibitive. When a company I was at looked into possibly getting him, the cost at the time was $400,000 per year and you had to sign a 3 year contract.......$1 point 2 million is a pretty big risk to take, to find out whether or not he would in this market.

In 3 years, Howard will be looking to get back in terrestrial radio...He jumped for the quick buck...it's simple...

"The" Says...

"As for Howard’s act “not playing in Boise, in every town I have ever worked in, management made a point to tell me that “this is a very conservative area. Yes, EVERY town thinks that, apparently. I finally figured out that what that REALLY meant is that management doesn’t want to deal with any complaints from listeners."

The Boise/Nampa/Caldwell areas have been getting more and more diverse for years...Lots of "different" people here now...Most coming from areas that are even more diverse than Boise...

Says "The" Again...

"Do you really think that Stern “wouldn’t play in Boise, a town which has more titty bars (or bikini bars if you prefer) per capita than any place I have ever lived? Why?"

Stern when he left the air in Seattle was THE #1 Morning radio show, 12+...For the last year and a half, he was dominating the market when the show ended...

Seattle, a city with NO GENTLEMAN'S CLUBS!?!

I'd be bellying up those "Tittie" Bar ads with some good agency work like Albertson's or some "That's Jared!" spots...

The point is who is going to pay for radio, mp3's and any subscriptions or anything media involved when the entire "pop culture underbelly" is being robbed blind by "Internet pirates/domestic terrorists"???...

While I enjoy Howard's show, he's made his money with a huge contract...Jacking a free mp3 of his show, one hour after air is just easier to do than pay for a subscription...

Besides all the good genre hot/comedy/"Radio For Guys" talk shows are available on-line...Thanks to out-of-market streaming radio stations, I stay entertained no matter what...

I have to agree with THE in that this area is not as CONSERVATIVE as one might like to think. Just because we are force fed a feeding tube dose of Rush, Savage, Beck, etc 24/7 does not mean we are all eating it up.

I think the majority of all people like to side with doing what is correct... that does not mean I dont know how to laugh, or want to hear a balanced approach to the so-called main stream media news formats... I dare you to challenge me and other to THINK! Dont hand me your predigested pablum... Give me local programming about local issues and dont just rip off the Local section of the Idaho Statesman or repeat local firms press releases and call it news....

If we are soooo Conservative how come the LDS don't have a hold on the dial like some other market's. (LDS used as an example there are Catholic radio services as well..or whatever flavor you want for that matter) Also if you want conservative there are REALLY conservative patriot radio formats that make Rush etc look like a flamming Communist.

I agree there is a lot ass-uming going on in the high chairs of the board rooms... I like to think that we have fairly high morale values (still) here and that is a good thing.. but never assume that this area something new won't work...simply because "well, vern, its always been this way......so,...." or "see that new Beemer out there in the parking lot, well I sure am not going to endanger my comfort level by trying something new...."

Innovation takes guts... Guts dont seem to be needed when something is working marginally and you dont want to rock the boat....In any investment the true risk takers risk it all but also stand the greatest chance of the greatest return on their investments....

I believe that sat radio will be the motivating factor for the "BIG GUNS" and Small owners in radio to begin to once again focus on what makes local radio so important, localism. It's what will always and has always seperated the essential from the non-essential. If we can do a good job at being local the ad dollors will naturally flow, if not, well, you will be where you have always been, trying to "figure it out".

It's funny how everyone is so concerned with sat radio taking over terestrial radio, that no onw is mentioning that I-pod and mp3 sales are selling at a rate 5 to 6 times higher than satalite radios......Try and get any kind of ipod for a chistmast present right now, stores can't keep them in stock.....ain't gonna happen, and yet there are plenty of satalite radios available. Say what you want sat radio is still radio.....music on an ipod is not. In a recent study printed in an industy magazine, 85% of people surveyed said that if they heard a dj of any type....whether on sat radio or terestrial radio, they didn't differentiate between the two....it was all just regular radio to them. 85% couldn't tell the difference between the two. If that is indeed the case, then the only advantage between the two is that you don't have to have a special radio and pay a monthly fee for one. It just goes to show that the average person doesn't put as much thought or care about radio and their choices as much as we in the business would like to think they do.....unfortunate, but true.

Nice to hear some articulated, well thought out comments. From one AM-FM-SW-Ham and any other tech comm gadget fan to another, nice to have your comments. Hope you will speak up more often. You are totally correct that the appearance of Sat as a viable medium will force the old school wall flowers to get up and dance...or go home alone.
