It's a red letter day everybody! Dizzle just mentioned a Boise radio station flipping format, and didn't bring up the Jack format!

I think I'll celebrate with ice cream at Delsa's.

You are probably right in the sense that business owners are smarter than radio managers. Dont agree with the buyers mentality. There are just too many SMALL inexperienced owners who dont have a clue how to do a smart sales campaign and get taken.ANYONE can open a business, hang out their sign and lose all the money they want...its the American way. They dont understand (usually) that it takes frequency, which can cost a great deal, and with a limited budget it wont work as well as they think with just a few spots that THEY are listening for. SO they come away with a bad taste in their mouth. They fail to budget enough money or dont have enough to do a good job in the first place...over a period of time creating reach... HINT- If you are doing your job in sales you are not just selling them someting, closing the sale and getting the hell out the door, you are also educating the client to how the big picuture works and not just taking their money...good sales people are smart and do this as it only makes sense and long term benefits and relationship building in the future. Good sales reps are business builders. Poor sales reps do a lot more damage than can be realized... expecially for the next poor sap who walks in the door with a package or offer....I suspect you are the type who knows how to sell the medium and not just the monthly "special".

Boosters. . . “ignorant advertisers” are few and far between. Sold many an spot in this fair city and I can tell you very few buyers bought because I was cute. Some did buy a station they liked, but usually because they figured that if they listened their customers would also. Ktix and they River always out sell their “ratings” because many loyal listeners are media buyers. It has been my radio experience that business owners who make media buys are often ahead of the ratings and MUCH smarter than most radio station owners!

Codger, You are right on the money where the subject of ratings is involved.

My biggest gripe is the way some er, a great many small business owners get suckered into buying spots on such crap as high school sports then complain that radio wont work for them... well duh,.

Another is that ignorant advertisers buy time on stations that "the boys here in the shop" listen to it... so thats where I will spend some ad money...so what that my target audience is women who drive BMW's and listen to the River... OR, "Hey, the sales Rep is really cute, and I think she likes me... so here is some money for that signal..." or "Well, I buy my radio cause, my cousin's, daugher's, sister in-laws, brother's uncle, knows this cute little thing that just got out of college and needs some commissions to make it through the month....so what the heck...

Yah, ratings.......then we all wonder why popular formats fail.....

Bad Cale! My eyes just started bleeding!!

People sometimes have to take a step backwards to go forward...The CC Country brick that has hit you all in the head doesn't matter...What matters now is what Citadel does to counter program CC's new country effort...Do they continue to ween 2 active country stations or get bold and flip one of those stations to something else??...How long will it take to burn out the country format in Boise??...Predictions?? Anyone??...We could slap another AC on the air??...That's pretty cheap??...

I have to give it to you Codger. I thought you had been on some impressive painkillers when you said KFXD had a 2 share. But I stand corrected.

I am wondering though, if CC is able to sell those country combo six share numbers when Citadel can also sell a country combo with a 15 share.

Hey Dan, I just noticed Journal doesn't have a country station. Can we flip J105 to Crusty Country 105? We could sell our four share a lot better, and we could trade Torch remotes for Chippendales remotes! Woo Hoo!!

Booster, the other thing you forget, is that there is no such thing as ratings, only what arbitron says is ratings, and everyone knows that isn't a true indication of who is actually listening.

Codger, given the political climate of Idaho and its Lottery, you might want to paraphrase your offer to bet actual money like that....at least on line.. The Idaho Lottery Commission guards its monopoly on betting almost as much as CC and Citadel do their love of collecting station licenses.... You of course were just "kidding" right.... The Lottery seems to want to push its weight around with Poker Runs for churches and motorcycle clubs and raffles for quilt clubs, so you might want to put a "disclaimer" on that "offer"... A sad state of affairs in a free nation...

You are probably right though on your point in making the bet.... because those folks buying the advertising are for the most point ignorant of how to reach a target audience.... In my younger daze working at a very popular "rock" station, I was told by the PD that programming is BACKASS backwards, who cares about ratings....its what you CAN SELL.....

Cale, I said it once and I'll say it again.....a four share of country will make a sh%#tload more money than a four share of oldies, plus add it to the 2 share you get with kfxd and all of a sudden you have a six share combo......that puts the cc country format in the top 5......seems to me to be a pretty easy sell.

And you will see khits get a bump in the ratings, but they won't go up 4 points......and anyone who wants to bet on it, I'll put up $100 and give you 5 to one odds.
