I’m not aware of any in all of Idaho. There are 5 competing applications for a new AM at 1590 in Treasure Valley (Boise, Garden City, Kuna, Oldtown & Star) but nothing in the 1605 to 1700 dial range. There is also an application in Sun Valley for 1600.

I think this is an isolated case where there was an evaluation of a 1kw daytime signal at 690 versus a 10kw signal at 1620 in conjunction with a nighttime signal on 690 that covered its city of license. Besides, the power bill and upkeep of a 1kw is going to be far less than the 10kw without any real significant improvement in coverage.

I also think the expanded AM band is in no better or worse shape than the rest of the AM band…less than 25% of all radio listening!

Question for Oldtimer….

What is the present status of the expanded AM band… is this a sign it is dying or just a issolated case? Is this a product of the so called digital AM process…?

Blackfoot’s ESPN 1620 was an expanded band station granted in the late 90s to replace daytime only 690. The owners (Bonneville) were allowed to make the decision to keep 1620 OR 690…they chose to keep 690 and return to the FCC the 1620 frequency. The FCC cancelled the 1620 license at Blackfoot and deleted it’s call letters (KBLI). Actually, buyer VanderSloot also had in say in whether 1620 stayed or went but the FCC would not allow BOTH stations any longer.
