K-Fixed

Don Day | April 11, 2006

More from the KFXD files.

Those wall pictures I was sniffing around for a few weeks ago do exist, and our friend RDS was kind enough to scan them for me.

I always loved this passage:

Hey KFXD
– you should call your station
K-Fixed — the station that saved the world
or fixed it.

Here’s the images – click to enlarge.

I’m sooooo bumbed. ;-( As the person who started the wall of fame waaayyyy back in 1989, I’m sad to see that they took my name off the wall, from when I signed it after we placed 2nd in arb with a ten share…..and 1st in Birch (remember that ratings service?)
The last time I believe the the 94.9 frequency ever even close to a 10 share…..Them were the days, Dave Arther did afternoons, Victor Obenhoff, (now with channel 2)overnights, Chris Brewer nights, Tom Collins and Robin Scott, weekends…..Pretty damn good staff. Of course after posting the record ratings, I recieved my $10,000 bonus and a pink slip, because they didn’t feel like they could afford me anymore if I was going to keep getting bonuses. Within about a year or so, most of that entire staff was gone and broadcasting elsewhere……some at the New Magic 93.1 where they forced KF95 to switch formats to Ac within a year. Ahhhh the memories, back when radio was live all the time, when you had 20 to 50 thousand dollars a book to spend on actual contesting and promotions, when it was still a lot of fum and you didn’t have 7 different bosses telling you how to cut costs to save money and where to put the new commercial block.

Actually, it looks like the entire wall was repainted! I’m gunna have to look through my pictures as this doesn’t appear to have ANY of the signitures that were there in the KF95 days. I’m pretty sure I have a shot of Curtis Stigers signing it. All of these say KFXD, I don’t see anything about KF95 on there. What a bummer.

Mike, them were the days! I’ll never forget the night you and Bruce Wetton took me out to Cafe Ole’ to offer me a gig at Magic 93.1 and Dave and Margo Obenhoff walked in on our dinner… AWKWARD! :-)

I saw a few “KF95″ comments on those Dave, but I was sad to say I only recognized Jars of Clay (but, of course, this is kind of from a distance…)

Mike, I want to thank you for your post. I’m sure many more will also enjoy reading of the “good ol’ days.”

The wall in the pics was started in ‘96 when the station went to the AAA format. Previous to that I think it was repainted (prior to my knowledge of the “wall”). I’m sure Don would welcome any pictures of an earlier “wall”. During most of the ‘96 to 2000 time frame, it was still KFXD-FM, changing to KFXJ in ‘99 when Jaycor (now Clear Channel) purchased the AM station. That’s why most of the references are still KFXD. In 2000 Journal bought the FM and KFXJ became KRVB, the River. The station moved, and the wall was forever abandoned.

Too bad someone felt the need to paint over the old stuff… it’s not like there wasn’t PLENTY of wall just down the way! Now I’m fired up to find my pics… I know I’ve got pics of at least Curtis Stigers and the Nelson twins while they were there…

I remember Kip Winger of Winger signed it too. I think I might still have pictures of him and Tim Dalbek (now a big wig with Atlantic Records in LA) standing in front of the wall and signing it. It really is too bad that it was painted over, because there really was some pretty cool history associated with the wall.

Dalbek was in town…I thought that you only saw Dalbeck when he bought you Mariners tickets……

While you are reminicing…did “Potato” ever stop by that station as a rep?

To add to the info from RDS-These pics were taken late in the KF95 days. Post Obenoffs. Rick Weight as GM.

I was selling air at the time. Seems as if the wall was clean before this one was started up, but I’m not sure. I do know a couple of “artists” were deleted along the line.

BTW-Victor (Fox) Obenoff is long gone from 2.

Yes, Potato did call on me when I was first in town, that was how I met him…..and he was actually one of the cool reps in the NW…..Then of course, he became a radio whore, and now he is just as bad as all the rest of us. ;-) hi Tim

Potato was a cool rep…so was Jim Anderson and Beth at A&M.

Nothing better than the story of one rep in the early 90’s who was in town for a show and enjoying a peacful “smoke” in his car afterward. He was speeding and got pulled over…windows were down to clear the smoke and he “swallowed” the evidence before the cops got up to the car!!!

I was the guy who “flipped KFXD to Triple A, August 25th 4pm we flipped the format…Rick Weight was the GM (or at least put the initials after his name)…I came in from successful stints in Steamboat Springs, Wenatchee and consutling small markets around the states who wanted to try something different. For the record, the walls were all white in the downstairs hallway when I got there….So as I had done in previous stations, we started a “Wall of Fame”…did not mean any disrespect to any of the previous formats at the KFXD.

I had a good two year run there, but the GM was paranoid, Kevin Welch stabbed me in the back and my wife and I were escorted from the building one May morning without any reason….Ah such is the business.
