All I have to offer is the KDJQ.com domain which I own. I bought it about a year ago when this site pointed out that it was available.

No, I'm not looking to make a million bucks with it. If KDJQ wants it, I'd be more than happy to entertain any reasonable offer. Trade me some stuff for it.

If anyone out there wants to complain about the present status of KDJQ, (song lists, rotations, spot productions, air staff/talent etc )perhaps we should be willing to put our money (and or talent) where our mouth is....

If you dont like the present programming situation at the station, then perhaps step up to the plate, contact the owner and offer to put some of your talent and experience as well as time to use. I am sure this station, like any other of its size would just love some help in getting it up and running and making an impact in the next book.

The best jobs I have ever had started out as crappy volunteer postions or as part timer weekend slots. It really doesnt take much to make effective, productive action take place. Afterall, the journey of a thousand miles starts with one step...

If I lived closer to the station I would already have done what I am suggesting to others. It would be great to work for a "mom and pop" station again. A station that does not have so much money behind it that it cares more about its Stock Exchanged shareholders quarterly profit statements. A station that has the POTENTIAL for true innovation.

I guess I should specify... KDJQ didn't have any direct competition in the last book, but now they do. KGEM and KAYN both switched to oldies around this winter. KGEM has alot of potential, and if JBG is smart, they will utilize it.

They've gotta do something. They have a .6 share in a market where they don't even have any direct competition. If they can't afford to do it, someone else will. The station with no talent will lose.

Oh gosh yes! That station must be making so much money, it comes in on 300 pound pallets from all three of those advertisers they have on the air right now! Why don't they hire a huge staff and do all live all the time? Silly KDJQ people. They should know better and stop sitting on all that money.

As the saying goes: you have to spend money to make money. If the KDJQ people hired some talent, and actually had a live shift or two, that would make an enormous difference. In their day, most "oldies" were fun, high-energy, youthful rock-and-roll songs. Rock and roll radio was also fun, and it had personality. This type of music was never intended to be automated by a computer in an empty room.

A few comments on what Dizzle suggested (The suggestions are OK, just the implementations may be problematic).

First":

"If KDJQ is going to be a “throwback” type of station, why not do LIVE announcements instead of produced commercial breaks."

Well, that requires people to be there live. That might be a problem is the staff is small. Right now I'm not even hearing voice-tracked stuff much on KDJQ. Mostly just a big juke-box.

Second:

"I’d also start contacting businesses that cater to the KDJQ generation and ask the owners of the company how much they spend per month on those in-house, canned satellite services for stores, restaurants or public areas."

This one can be a bit sticky too. If the business just puts a radio on the shelf and plays it, OK. BUT... if they play it over the in-store sound system, then the music licensing people get involved and want their piece of the pie. That's included in the fee they pay to the satellite people...... Cancelling a music service just might trigger a visit from ASCAP or BMI to see what they replaced it with.

Also, don't forget, since KOOL left the oldies void, there are more players to contend with. KGEM 1140 is oldies, as well, and also an FM heard in this market now. And, no, I'm not talking about KHITS, even tho a lot of people put it in the same category. With those others out there, KDJQ isn't going to find it as easy. They won't just win by default. They'll have to do their share of giving the listener something they don't find somewhere else, and somehow promote it.

For KDJQ's first time out, what do you expect??

Give it some time. I think once they figure out the best way to sell and expose the station to the public, more "old school" types of revenue will start coming in.

Try and get them to invest with a local alternative. Some businesses spend 200-300 bucks a month for those industrial satellite services to play the same music KDJQ is playing 24/7, for free.
