PEAK BROADCASTING PURCHASES CC BOISE

Don Day | March 3, 2007

EXCLUSIVE
Idaho Radio News has learned that Peak Broadcasting of Fresno, CA has entered in to an agreement to purchase six radio stations in the Boise, ID area, currently owned by Clear Channel Communications.

Peak will pick up KSAS/103.3 Kiss FM, KCIX/Mix 106, KXLT/Lite 108, KTMY/My Country 104.3, KFXD/Classic Country 630 and KIDO/News Radio 580 – all currently broadcasting from offices on ParkCenter Blvd. in Boise.

Peak says it will focus on programming and “customer based” advertising solutions – and will pump “significant marketing” in to the stations. The group also promises to push new media.

The sale is part of Clear Channel’s ongoing effort to take the company private. The company announced it would shed all radio clusters outside the top 100 markets – with Boise being the largest group up for sale. This is the first change in ownership for one of the three major Boise clusters in nearly a decade.

The FCC still has to approve the deal.

More coverage to come…

Wasn’t Bob Lee at KBBK? Where is he now? I remember listening to Bob when I was a small child of 13ish.

Bob was where ever he could con someone into giving him a a job, and yes, for awhile he was at KBBK. I don’t know where he is now, but if you find him, remind him he owes me money. 2 or 3 years ago I heard he was in Virginia or something like that.

If I recall correcty, Bob Lee and Chris Brewer were also on 580 KFXD when it was still KFXD- not KIDO. (See why the call letter thing is confusing?) Those guys started out insane, and only went downhill from there. Bob had a tendancy to say “interesting” things. Just add alcohol!

Anyone remember when KFXD-AM was running religious programming? It was around 1990… anyway, while I was on the air on KF95, “Bad Bob” was in the next room trying to keep the religious shows on the air, cussing like crazy when he’d screw up, then he’d yell, “Thank you JESUS!” My favorite were the times he’d walk in to the studio and say something that made absolutely no sense, he’d laugh and go back to his smoke. Oh yeah, you could still smoke in the studios then.

Didn’t you post his mug shot on here a couple years ago, Don?

I think the early days of KQXR as Pirate Radio were even crazier. It sounded like they only had about 11 CDs in their entire music library. I can’t believe Bob Lee pulled that one off. I’m sure that still he owes money to more people than just RDS! It’s amazing how such a messed up individual can turn out to be a living legend of sorts, well at least in the Boise radio market.

Another comment on the Peak story…

I guess I’ll ask this question again:
Does anyone know what will be the fate of the Clear Channel out of market voicetrackers?(For example: Chase, who got everyone riled up a few weeks ago.) Will Peak keep them, or do they work for CC only? Obviously, the 1-800 number contests and one-size-fits-all nationwide station imaging will be a thing of the past. (I asked this question previously in this thread, and got no response. I don’t suppose anyone really knows the answer yet anyways. Either way, we’ll find out soon enough.)

    P.S.
To think, Don was talking about putting the axe to Idaho Radio News a few months back. There are 105 posts on just this one thread. Trust me, we appreciate that it is still here!

    Peabody,
I think the bigger question than the out of market voicetrackers is the NexGen. Because there is no way to get the voicetracking without that, and as far as I know that’s only a clearchannel system.

    Anyone know?

More than likely, Peak will PAY Clear Channel to maintain both the automation and voice tracking services.

As long as this group of stations are still connected to “The Evil Empire” in some way, shape or form, NOTHING WILL CHANGE!

That, in my humble opinion, SUCKS!

The KIDO/KFXD flip, I think, was Jon Duane’s idea. He had been mulling it over when CC/Jacor made the KFXD purchase..long before someone in management figured out that it made sense. It had to do with both the patterns and KIDO’s proximity on the dial to the BOI. As for the actual calls themselves, from an arbitron standpoint, it’s easier to retrain listeners to adjust their radio then it is to readjust their minds.
From a listener standpoint, I think ratings have proved it made little difference to the KIDO crowd..though I think it probably hurt the classic country station.
As for history, the real treasure valley broadcasting bloodbath occurred when KIDO television became KTVB…Boise television has never been the same since…neither has the radio market come to think of it. I sure hope Belo is considering reversing that holocaust. Damn these owners! maybe it’s time to form a “call letter preservation society.”

Jac, I believe Prophet is available to any station who wants to purchase it regardless of who it’s owned by.

It IS part of Clear Channel though…

I am excited to hear that something MAY happen to change some of the crappy radio formats currently being force-fed down the ears of tolerable listeners all over the valley.
I am a musician in one of the MANY great local metal bands in town(contrary to popular belief, metal bands do have musicians in them). There has been a large demand for local music such as ours to be played on the radio. Unfortunately there is only one station in town that could pull it off and they won’t do it. If Boise wants metal, we have to turn to satellite such as Sirius. Trust me when I say I speak for thousands of people.
Local metal desrves a spot. Even if its Monday night at midnight. Although a Friday would be more respectable. ;)

    You have my 2 cents.

    Thank you,
    David Ford

PS…If I have to DJ the metal for you…I’ll be more than happy to.
