Number one talks about number two

Don Day | March 13, 2007

KCIX/Mix 106 vaulted to the top of the ratings pile in the latest book – which gives an old promo a new edge.

The spot (still in rotation) talks about how lots of stations claim they are number one…. “but the problem is… most of them sound like (flush sound effect) number two.”

That sounds like a jab at the (formerly) nearly identical positioning statements for KZMG and KSAS “Boise’s #1 Hit Music Station/Channel.” Magic dropped the branding – leaving just Kiss (and I can’t think of anyone really emphasizing “number one” at the moment). KSAS and KCIX share an owner if I remember correctly…

Hey if you say your number one long enough, don’t you have a good chance at it eventually becoming true…..

I will say, if you look at all the successful stations here in Boise, that bring in the most income for thier companies, you will notice one mazing fact…..each station has a long running, and in most cases a very good morning show, that has been together a minimum of 5 years. KBOI, KHITS, KCIX, KIZN, EAGLE……So the lesson would seem to be find a good show, put them on and give them all the support and room they need to grow and become a success…..then pay them very well, to keep them together for as long as you can, because they are usually responsible for a bulk of the income for a station.

Pretty easy to answer that question… look at the ratings, if they’re high then yes the audience likes it… or at minimum tolerates it. One of dumbest things I ever heard come out of a PD’s mouth… “Yeah, well, what does the listener know?”
