Notebook

Don Day | March 21, 2007

- Reno Citadel execs were in Boise today
- Peak CEO Todd Lawley was checking over his new property on Park Blvd. today
- It’s safe to say we’re going to see at least one station in the Boise market flip soon. At least one.
- AllAccess is rolling around the rumor that Tario and Levi will stay with Clear Channel in another market. I’ll let them sink or swim on that one.
- KIOV is back on the air… more on this soon.

Are we talking about 103-3 Kiss FM flipping?

KIOV 1450 is back on the air, but it took a while for people to… Notus. Sorry. I just had to say it. (Notus is KIOV’s new city of license. Their signal is quite weak, but hits Boise a little.)

Are they going to go back to sports again, or are they going back to their loosely automated oldies music? Currently I am hearing some interesting programming choices: Lou Bega, Moody Blues, Foreigner, House of Pain, Faith no More, OMC, and CW McCall… Ughh.

As for Kiss- If they flipped it, what would it become? Kiss historically hasn’t been a real ratings ball of fire, but they still smoked Magic this last book. It would seem like the Peak sales staff could sell it, and make decent money, as long as it stays on top of the CHR heap. I doubt that they would flip Kiss before My Country. But if they were going to flip both…

First of all, Mycountry hasn’t been given a chance. I do truly think they would want to keep that for at least a couple more books. Remember, it’s only been through 2 so far.
And secondly, if the clearchannel sales staff couldn’t sell Kiss, I doubt anyone else could either. Or would want to try.

I’m with Peabody…what would you become if you flipped? Country is so saturated in the market at the moment but there isn’t a red cent put into mycountry so I can’t see what they’d flip to until they give it a good shot. The only thing that makes sense is to counter program some sort of alternative AC to protect their finally (after like a decade)successful Mix. Movin is an option too but a female demo which would suck the life outta Mix as well! hmmmmm…..

They can go ahead and try My Country, but keep in mind, they have to compete with KQFC and KIZN- which have quite a bit of heritage in this market. There is classic country on KFXD AM, and now that KSRV FM has relocated to Deer Point, they are also in the game. With a total of 5 country stations, this market is pretty saturated. Besides, the format of country as a whole has not been doing terribly well lately anyway. They might be able to successfully program classic country on KTMY and flip KFXD to something else. Whatever they choose, they will have to change something. I think that My Country will never have a really big book on it’s current course, unless we have another terrorist attack, or something.

Kiss has been able to do well competing against Magic’s indecisive programming as of late. CHR is always a hard sell, but it can sell- especially if you have a high-quality product.

Personally, I’d push “My Country” to the 103.3 frequency and BRING BACK BIG JACK AND THE OLDIES TO KOOL 104!!

…but I got one of those huge Neanderthal monkey hearts like Christian Slater in “Untamed Heart” who loves to re-visit the past…

    Here’s another wacky idea!

Take KIDO-AM and simulcast the signal on one of the FM stations. Create an AM/FM combo and introduce a new audience to the type of programming that is currently only available on an AM dial.

This idea is working for Bonneville in SLC right now, Why not in Boise?

…not to mention a multi-generational rock station with a staff who uses current technology to interact with it’s audience and have the freedom to really play “Everything That ROCKS!”

    I guess that’s just a dream??

The “My Country” name and 104.3 frequency is “tainted” as the market loser. Peak could flip 103.3 to “Kiss Country”, which is their brand in Fresno. (The only problem is; it would sound too similar to Kissin’ Country.) 104.3 could start over as “Jack FM”.

So are you saying they sank? HA. GM is very charming and brilliant, but maybe not as brillant as ones self arrogance thought. Maybe he’ll come down to earth a bit now and not be so hard on the little people, who actually still have a job.

Dizzle… You are referring to KSL in Slat lake with the AM/FM thing… 1160am/102.7FM. I go down there alot for hockey tournaments, and I rarely listen to KSL on the FM side. For some reason, it doesn’t sound right. Besides, their am signal is a blowtorch. When I don’t listen to Opie & Anthony in the mornings on XM (which is rarely) I’ll listen to KSL and KOA out of Denver. Both monster AM’s… Of course that is at 5am when I am heading to work. Not sure if that would go over here, tho, with an AM/FM combo. You know what would help KIDO??? Bring back Jon & Chris. That would help things out at KIDO immensly!!

Jim… I usually wait until middays to catch a replay of O&A but with Dennis Miller coming on the air Monday, I might have to locate a different replay for O&A.

The only person to have success in the AM Drive spot for the past 20+ years on KIDO-AM has been Jon and Chris.

As Jon used to say “I think this is a no-brainier?”

I’d imagine Jon’s done sitting in the Bar-Co-Lounger. Chris has caught up on her gardening and has probably lost a couple of dogs in this timespan off.

    BRING BACK JON and CHRIS!

    Just an FYI… O & A replays are: Free-FM 1:00-3:30pm, XM replay 3:30-5:30pm, Free-FM 5:30-8:00pm, XM replay 8-10pm. Then Ron & Fez from 10pm-1am. Now do I have you confused???

Yes, I agree with Jon & Chris. One can only play so much golf. WHAT AM I SAYING??? Oh well, this from someone that only played 2 rounds all of last year. I must find a way to rectify that. Oh yeah, stop refereeing hockey!!! That’s right, my season is over. YEAH!!!

    Jim
