Boomer ready to go

Don Day | March 31, 2007

Dave Tester tells Idaho Radio News that Boomer 100.7 will launch on KAYN-FM 100.7 in the next few weeks. The station is already using an Oldies format, but is without branding or a morning show.

That will change soon, when Jack Armstrong joining the station to anchor AM drive.

Not a very good place to put him, is that still on a booster? Was that once KMXM or am I mistaken, and see what a quality signal I get from 99.1 these days.

He’ll be working somewhere in Washington State in less than a year, and that’s sad.

Wait to see what happens to KIDO. KBOI can’t kick them in the teeth forever and they haven’t had a decent format ratingswise in 29 years. The one that worked was being developed for KIDQ/Q104 and was not any competition for KFXD-AM, but instead KUUZ and KFXD-FM, if you have to look at it like that. KJOT was Supercountry with KGEM. KBBK Magic 92 didn’t play AOR and wasn’t aiming at that demo as I see it.

It doesn’t matter if my posts un-post, I see the answers to my post and that they read them.

You folks work in radio everyday and I hardly listen somedays. I sit and read and talk back and I’m not supposed to know anything about squat. Why can’t you all figure this out–IST EIN KINDER? NEIN!

    Best of luck, 1450 forever

Mornings…. Jack is no morning guy…. No, I mean he does not like to get up early….. I suspect in time that he will be moving back to afternoons once the format gets stablized and the listenership has recognized his presence there.

Oh Broncofan, so sadly misinformed you are. I’m not at liberty to give the details of my deal with Tester Broadcasting but this I can say … It’s a deal that ANYBODY in the business would jump at and then say “Wow, this is the kinda of stuff you only read about!”

Now Broncofan, if you would be kind as to pass the offering plate!

    Big Jack,

Good luck to you on the new station! I think you’ll do fine in whatever day-part you end up on. You and Oldies go together like bigfoot and forests, and you harken back to a day where dj’s had personality! I’m deep in the heart of Texas playing Toby….Flascal Rats, Kenny, and telling bigfoot stories to the good people of San Angelo. Yee Haw! Take care friend!

Hey, Jack, is there a start date for your morning show? It will be nice to hear you back on the air in the Boise market.

I’m writing this from the KSRV studios in Ontario. It’s 6am Tuesday. I’m here to get things ready for the launch of the Big Jack and Bryan Morning Show. Yes … Bryan as in Bryan Gregory. The 2 of us did mornings at Kool 104.3 along with Melissa who continues to be in the Park Blvd building.

We have a start date planned of Monday April 16th, HOWEVER … plans can always get pushed back a day or so, that’s just the nature of the beast.

Lots of music and 2 guys just having fun in the morning!! Some of the very funny features we use to run at Kool will return mixed in with some new features as well.

‘Boomer 100.7, Big Jack and Bryan Morning Show and the oldies! Let the games begin!!!!!

I hope the play list is as good as the 890 play list, which is one of the best I have listed to over many years of listing to oldies. Give them hell boys!!

Welcome back to the oldies, Big Jack!!! You’ve really been missed and it’s GREAT to have you back on the air! I’ve been one of your many listeners for years, and I was so elated to find you on 100.7 … Best Wishes!!

I’ve been listening when I get a chance. The liners sound good and everything technically now has “a tightened up sound” on the air.

If your stationary, the 100.7 signal sounds great darn near anywhere in Boise. When you ride around in the car, the 100.7 signal catches a little static but the sound is still on the radar.

For Jack’s interest, I would have like to have seen the Oldies format light up the 99.1 frequency for better area coverage.
Hopefully, the 100.7 signal will get a chance at a full-power signal sometime in the near future.

Just Another Comment … I wanted to say how AWESOME it is to have such a wide variety of oldies on Boomer 100.7 … I’ve been listening to all kinds of great stuff that I haven’t heard for a very long time … The format is much better than it ever was on 104.3! Keep up the good work, Big Jack!!!

Actually, Dizzle, both KAYN 100.7 and KTPD 99.1 have almost identical coverage. They both share the same transmitter site, both broadcast with the same power (73 KW ERP according to radio-locator.com) and both have 800 Watt boosters in the same location, to better cover Boise. that’s about as full power as they come. The reason why neither station covers Boise very clearly, is because their Bennett Mountain site is shadowed by the mountains and foothills to the east of downtown. The boosters improve the signal in some areas, but in the booster’s fringe areas where the two signals coflict, the audio can sound far worse.

I stumbled across your station by a fortuitous accident. Now the dial is stuck there.
I actually know every song you guys play. My wife and I have a game to see who can name the song and artist.
    I always win.
The fact that I used to be a DJ in Las Vegas might have something to do with it.

I put it on my blog at blogidaho.com

    Best wishes.

I was really happy to hear that jack was back on fm agai until i heard the station. The sound was awful and staticy and kept going in and out. i tested it on several radios and had the same result. it also at times sounded as if the music was being played in a empty hollow concrete room. very echoed. as much as i love jack i just could not tolerate the awful sound so i find myself listening to a station that i could hear the music more clearly. also hearing jacks little quips through the day got real old real fast.

Hey Jack – Good to hear you back on the air! If my car battery hadn’t died, I’d still be listening to Tracer and Mango. If you need some freebies to give away on the air, drop me a note…after extensive web searching, I couldn’t find a number to call.

100.7 is the best station in boise, limited commercials, amazing music, the only bummer is that its hard to find without a digital tuner and sometimes the signal is a little fuzzy. but still the best in town keep up the good work, play more bob dylan.

The reincarnation of the oldies in the Boise market is a true testament to the fact that oldies is not DEAD! The baby boomer is still the one carrying the financial load of this country to the tune of around 67%. Oldies is “Americana”..and is an institution in this country. “Boomer” (100.7) thank you for coming back with Jack and Brian. Here’s wishing those that dropped the format a year and a half ago all end up “super sizing” at Burger King, where most of them should be working anyway.

‘Scott Shannon’s “True Oldies” comes to Boise. The new KQLZ (which are the old Pirate Radio calls from Shannon’s one-time LA station) debuts on the former KAYN (100.7) in Idaho’ – from Today’s Radio-Info news column.

So what’s happened to Big Jack and the gang?

Idaho’s Oldies? Hmmm… Sounds familiar. Maybe it’s because another station in Boise already uses that slogan. Let the Arbitron confusion begin.

Hey folks — because of copyright we can’t copy and paste news from other sites here. An excerpt is fine, but dumping the whole thing on can be a problem. I removed a comment above that basically states that KAYN has changed its calls to KQLZ and is picking up Scott Shannon’s True Oldies Channel format, but will stay live in the morning and afternoon. They are branding as “Idaho’s Oldies” according to R&R
