It is pretty weird if you aren't used to it. Once you get used to it, it's pretty cool. Some jocks never did shed the 'phones, though. They just couldn't get the "feel" of the sound without them. I guess it's all what you are used to or comfortable with. One of the guys hated headphones and he loved it. The production facilities, on the other hand, used headphones, and they guy that didn't like headphones always complained about the prod room. I was kind of on the fence. I liked it sometimes, and other times I just felt more at ease with the phones. We at least had the option.

"I love it when folks speak about technology they have had no experience with. It is sooooo credible."

Talking about MOI?

I didn't say it didn't exist ANYWHERE. I just said it drove me nuts, because it isn't like that at any of the stations I've worked at.

I love it when people attack people without understanding what they were saying. It's sooooo presumptive.

I can tell you from experience that WABC in New York and KGO-FM (KSFX) in San Francisco both featured what were then considered state-of-the-art studio audio systems that allowed the monitors to remain on while the on-air person was talking.

While it was actually pretty cool, most of us still wore headphones so as to control the level. Read that; "Crank it up!"

Yeah, I've heard of studios like that (I think I saw or read once that WNEW in NYC was like that) but I've never witnessed one personally.

I worked in one radio studio where we didn't use 'phones. When the mic went on, the monitor level dropped to a pre-set level just below the feedback point, but you could hear it very well. So, while it may have been a TV show, it is still within the realm of reality. 'Phones may be the usual, but that doesn't mean there isn't another way to do it.

It always drove me nuts when Johnny Fever talked over the intro of a record without wearing headphones.

Yeah, I know it was a TV show and the 'phones would have blocked Howard Hessmann's face, but it still made me nuts.

Unfortuately the show will not be the same to those of us who were able to view it in first run in the late 70's. As you say, the period music was a lot of the show's flavor. Sadly much of the music has become victim of the turf wars between artists, publishers, labels and the media. A lot of the original music is either gone, badly covered, or just messed up. Still, WKRP remains the most hip, context-correct television series ever done on TV about radio. In the words of Dr. Johnn Fever: "Huhhhhh?"
