PS What I'd really like to know is where are the hundreds (if not thousands) of pictures that Larry received from fans and farmers as "visual inspiration" for Animal Stories? Now THAT would be a book !!!!! cb

Late October 1970, fresh out of the military and ready to begin my new life as a civilian, my wife and I were driving from Los Angeles to Rantoul Illinois for my first radio job. (yeah, good career move already) It was a little before 6am, she was asleep with her head on my lap and it was cold and dark but I was full of hope and listening to "Uncle Lar" on the Big 89. Both my wife & I are Chicago natives by the way. Larry was on the phone with a young newlywed who was asking him if he'd ever been to Rantoul because her husband was being transfered there and she wanted to know about their future home. (coincidence?....Could be because I was kinda curious myself) Larry immediately told her that it was the "Armpit of the nation" and suggested that she divorce the guy. My hand immediately went for the volume knob to turn the radio down at the same time hoping my bride hadn't heard Lar's evaluation of their destination. (And mine) She hadn't but I started laughing which woke her up. She asked what was so funny, I told her "Nothing, I'm just loopy from the long drive. We lived in Rantoul for about a year and Lar was right. Sorry Rantoul.

In the early '80's I finally found myself walking thru the hallowed halls of The Rock of Chicago & working with all of the guys I idolized. (Well, maybe that's to strong a word, but it was a thrill finally meeting and working with Lujack) I'm hoping that some audio from the Memorial Day Rewind will be available soon. I'm currently living in Ft. Myers Florida and I'd love to hear some of it, especially the Dynamic Duo......Uncle Lar and Little snot nosed Tommy. It's been one Hell of a Ride. Thanks for lettin' me share. Chuck Britton

Did anyone record Larry's show? I blew it and didn't get it, although I did record most of the rest of the day. Dang, that must qualify me as a geek.

Linda, thanks for checking in with us. Your dad has influenced many, and I loved growing up listening to him while living in Glen Ellyn.

Hey Captain Mike... listening to WLS yesterday reminded me ALOT of the Memorial Day Weekend when we did The Magic Time Machine. THAT was cool day in Boise radio!

oh, linda, by the way, the person/larry i met was with friends, so they were all partying in a celebratory fashion. maybe they drove him down for part of a party weekend? now, i'd like to know, after all these years....could it have been him? even possibly? (i just hate to discount any brushes with greatness!)

linda, not besmirching the name of one of my faves, and a legend to a lot of us, but, the person who introduced himself to me as Larry Lujack in Nashville wasn't living or working there...he was just visiting...passing thru. he had been to the Kentucky derby or something. He made it clear that he was just visiting....and from what i remember, the pictures i saw later sure looked like him. it it wasn't him, my apologies. this was the seventies when it happened and i was very young and impressionable! (could he not have been just in town for one night?)

Thanks for your comments regarding my Dad's upcoming show on WLS. He is in Boise often, and in fact, is here today and I was pulling some internet stuff for him about the upcoming show. I need to correct a few things:

1. My Dad has NEVER been to Nashville or anywhere in the state of Tennessee. Whoever Ken Bass met was NOT my father. He tells me that he has had people out there impersonating him.

2. Larry Lujack has not been "on the sauce" since I've known him and I'm 40+. I think I have seen my Dad drink a total of about 3 beers in my WHOLE life.

3. My Dad is related to Bob Anthony McLaughlin (by marriage). My cousin is a good guy! I concur with the positive comments above.

I will be listening to the online stream from WLS on Monday and it's sure to bring back many good memories as I WAS in Chicago in the 70s listening to WLS from my purple Panasonic transitor!

Thanks everyone!

Don, thanks for the info about Bob. I know it's not all radio but it would be interesting to know how many of us media folks have left the biz for public service... I work with Dale Dixon and Ron Gardner. Also Bob Fick who came from AP works at Commerce and Labor. I'd also like to know who is still dabbling... Although we aren't working for a media outlet, some of us didn't really LEAVE the business. I have a VO studio at home with some small accounts across the country and a couple of nationals. Ron Gardner can be heard on our phone system when you call Commerce and Labor in Boise. I love my job with the state and I have to say, I am well compensated and my work is appreciated, which is more than I can say for my time in the Boise radio market... with one exception, and that was my time working for Bill and Joy at the traffic center... some of the best people I've worked for anywhere!
