Ratings: Spanish surges again

Don Day | August 18, 2007

KDBI/La Gran D 101.9 saw a big bounce in the latest Arbitron survey. The Bustos Media-owned station jumped to a 3.8 – the highest 12+ rating of any Spanish-language station since I began tracking in 1998. There might be a pattern at play, however. The station saw a great spring 2006 book, then dove to a .8 last fall. If it maintains or strengthens – there will be huge cause to celebrate.

KWEI was essentially flat from last fall with a 1.1, and KQTA failed to chart for whatever reason.

It’s amazing what kind of ratings happen when you have only 2,000 people tuning in so they can understand the language.

Sometime Radio will quit being stupid by using the AQH Share and go with Cume. Every other media uses total listeners except Radio.

On the other hand by using AQH Share it is easier to screw people out of bonus money.

And my thanks to Locally Owned for buying Arbitron in the Magic Valley. Eastland never included Spanish radio in its surveys and thanks to them, Spanish radio came out of the shadows in the Magic Valley and showed an even more impressive number (damn, we can’t use it though)here with a 4.7, kicking some big FM’s. My congrats to La Grande in Boise. We too are a Bustos affillate, although we have more local programming. And yes, there are a CH*&*O of Spanish listeners in Idaho. Those who are racist gringos better get used to the fact that Spanish IS our SECOND NATIONAL LANGUAGE. Learn it or loose big time in ANY industry.

I would like to know how to become a Busto affillate and have a program here in the St. Paul/Minneapolis area of Minnesota with a format like la Magia in the Yakima Valley and Federal Way, WA.

    Respectfully

Not according to Arbitron. They have a total of 2,400 listeners.

The top five cuming stations have 40 times that. Now imagine how many of their faithful listen on a regular basis.

Arbitron needs to set up ratings on the P1, P2 and P3 scale. You would find the popular stations totally killing the fringe ones even more.
