“Best of” poll gives Kissin’ top honors
Don Day | August 27, 2007Good week for KIZN/Kissin’ 92.3 In addition to topping the ratings race in a big way – the remaining readers of the Idaho Daily Statesman crowned morning team Kevin & Brenda best morning show… and the station itself as the overall best.
Big Jack & Bryan on KAYN/100.7 The Boomer grabbed second place in the DJ category – followed by Mike & Kate… and Pete and Joe. So recapping, that’s Kevin, Brenda, Jack, Bryan, Mike, Kate, Pete, Joe… in that order… I think.
In the station category, KAYN also took second, followed by KCIX and KZMG.
The station even noted KDJQ’s… unexpected… win in 2006: “Last year, an AM station came out of nowhere to mysteriously win this category.”
The Boise Weekly’s similar poll is due next month.
Last year, the website I help run beat the Statesman’s website in the poll… even though you had to log on to the Statesman’s site to vote. They cut that category this year. Imagine that.
Ok I thought I was the only stupid one….but I’ve asked a number of people who the hell Boomer 100 is and nobody seems to know thier story. I looked in the latest arbitron and since they don’t have any ratings, that didn’t help too much. So does anybody have the story…. more importantly how does a station that has no ratings, that nobody seems to know who they are or what town they’re located in get enough votes to show up in popularity contest.
It’s a newer station that really has not had a chance to be rated yet. They are in Ontario, soon to be in Nampa and it’s Boomer 100.7 not Boomer 100. They are going through some studio upgrades and moving stuff, be patient. Moving and upgrading broadcast gear isn’t like moving a crappy radio shack stereo from one room to another. There’s all them knobs and buttons and widgets and midgets to deal with. I think they will do well, just give them some time.
My point is how does a station located in Ontario, with no ratings, an iffy signal, that almost no one knows who they are show up in the Best of the Treasure Valley? It seems a little spicious to me. Me thinks some employees had some extra time on their hands to do a little..(a lot) of ballet stuffing……which is not illegal as far as I know, but it sure does say something about the crediblilty of “the best of the treasure valley”
“…ballet stuffing…” ????? Is that an overweight ballerina who doesn’t quite fit in a tutu? I’m picturing the dancing hippos from Disney’s “FANTASIA.”
Boomer 100.7 fan in Mountain Home
Ballet stuffing… Is that what happened in the Chevy Chase flick “Modern Problems”?
Ballet stuffing gives you SUCH a wedgie!
But damn you look sexy or is that a jock strap cup you’ve strategically placed in “that place?” LOL Guess that follows the sign-off line of Mark Browning, a former anchor friend of mine who ended his sports casts years ago, “Play fair, play hard and don’t forget to wear a cup!” No lie! Every Sportsline on KIFI was tagged that way!
Just remember in Ballet stuffing, it goes in front.
THATs been my problem. It’ll certainly help my profile!
The Boomer is Ontario….? Are all the Tester Stations in Ontario…. I thought that they were all headed to the big complex near the Idaho Center…and were to be there by now. Can someone at the TesterCorp HQ clarifiy some of this. And come on, its no wonder that Boomer came in as high as it did… are we to forget that Big Jack managed to get KDJQ in the top spot in the Boise Weekly poll last year… which just means that Jack knows how to play the game… something that other station promo managers could take some lessons from….thanks to whomever can clarify the locations of the TesterCorps station locations….
Here’s the OFFICAL word.
1380 The Bull KSRV AM will remain in Ontario
New studios in Nampa are on Franklin Road between Idaho Center and Sam’s Club. This complex will house Boomer 100.7, 96.1 BoB FM and 99.1 The Man. Sales department and management are already working out of there. We were told the first of August for on-air. Probably by mid September. AND IT IS STATE-OF-THE-ART. Until then, Bryan and I drive 100 miles round trip everyday.
Chubby … do some homework, investigate a bit. Boomer 100.7 is KAYN-FM. We are #24 12 plus! That’s right #24!!! In fact we have liners that say that. The format is 50/60/70s oldies/adult hits. For about 1/2 of the book we were on very low power. We came in under the radar, not even a blip on the screen … BY DESIGN!!! So then, how does Boomer 100.7 and Big Jack and Bryan become #2 in the Idaho Statesman? It’s called format loyalty and as RADIOACTIVE put it …. Jack knows how to play the game. But not just me, there are others who know how to play as well.
Oh and by the way Chubby, there is a big difference between ballOt and ballEt
No offense to any of my friends at the Statesman, but that poll has no controls on it to stop people from abusing the system.
Whatever.
And Big Jack plays the game VERY well!
Thanks for the information Jack….RadioActive.
Uhhh, I think that I said Jack plays the game well, when I said ballet or rather ballot stuffing. It may well be format loyalty (not)……I have continued my unscientific research, and have yet to find (after asking over 50 people and counting) if they had ever heard of boomer 100.7. Nope, not a one yet, but I will continue to ask, till I find just one.
Of course after realizing that the same thing happened last year with KDJQ and no one realized who or what dial that station was located, I guess I’m not surprized. The Boise weekly is running their version of the best of the treasure valley……a smart radio station would throw a few bucks Jacks way and have him stuff…uh, er manipulate the survey to get their respective station a mention….not worth any ad dollars, but it looks cool in print.
This year Boomer last year KDJQ one of 2 things can be happening here. One Big Jack does have a following or two some one is seriously stuffing the ballots where ever Big Jack goes. To much of a coincidence for me
Boise Weekly seems to be more strict on ballot stuffing. While you of course could bypass the whole IP address thing, you would definitely have to go to a lot more trouble.
wait a minute, wait a minute/////ballet….stuffing….is there room for a Larry Craig joke here?
well if Boomer shows up then in Boise weekly, I’d be more inclined to believe it……
Why is it so difficult to believe that a station that plays Oldies has the potential to come up well in any poll? Just because the stations that did well in the Arbitron showed a different impact in a different poll does NOT mean ballet stuffing.
We ALL know that we are at the mercy of survey’s such as Arbitron, even though we ALSO know that there are times when the results cannot possibly reflect what REALLY is happening across the Valley. The microscopic number of people involved in these survey’s are ‘In Theory’ representing the whole of this market, and yet there have been times when I KNEW the results were incredibly off at best and bordering on absolute lies at worst. So what do we do? We accept it and move on. If Boomer shows up better than some expected, just move on. Does it really matter to the demo YOU are attempting to reach? Other than K-Hits, who else is programming specifically to that crowd anyway?
Perspective, people. Big Jack KNOWS how to work his listeners, and they in turn show their appreciation in the form of these types of polls. It’s as simple as that. What people need to worry about is when businesses begin to rely on these types of survey’s when buying advertising…then I would expect things to get a little more interesting around here…
Last I checked, there already is a popularity contest in Boise Radio.
It’s called arbitron.
It comes out twice as much as the Statesman’s best-of (same for the BW).
It’s the only game that matters, despite what those publications would have you believe. Fluff seasonal piece.
Oooh. Kallao. ‘Sup?
I’m not certain that Arbitron is that much better at giving us a read on who listens to what stations when. But it is what we have to live with.
Hope you’re well.
Hi Tim! Going out to Atlanta much on the weekends?
Oh, I agree…Arbitron is like a measuring stick on acid. I’d perfer something besides diaries and pagers to grade our audience reach. But you’re right, it’s what we have to live with. A yearlong fluff piece. :)
Having lived in San Diego (and some other 4 book markets), while it’s refreshing to get a new number every month, I miss those incredibly weighted 2 books that come back.
As jacent once said, you could sit at the blackjack table betting minimum hands every day for 2 hours. Or you can walk into the casino twice a year and put your life savings on black.
You know, or red.
thanks tim!
So is this a question on whether or not Jack (or someone else at Boomer) stuffed the ballets, ‘er… ballots? Lets say he DID! Way to go, Jack (um, or whoever)! The majority of readers will not know if the “local newspaper” hasn’t learned how to make it more difficult to stuff… So a then a perception is made that apparently all your friends really like Boomer, so you better listen too. THEN after you find yourself listening to Boomer all the time, you can enter that info into your Arbitron diary.
Sure, this was fluff, but it sure is a shot in the arm of the stations who were recognized. And the free advertising sure doesn’t hurt.
BTW, Ken, you “crack” me up.
Thanks, Dave. I’m not sure what I did to do that, but I’ll plead guilty if it’ll make it go away. Thats a popular “stance” these days.
who the hell is Big Jack?
Is this where all the old jocks go to die?! Nice to see your names again!
Ken, do you have a wider stance than most???
Barry the traffic _ _ _ _ _! How’s life whereever the heck you’re at?
not wide enough to get me arrested, jim!
