Big Boy in big trouble
Don Day | October 4, 2007Former KZMG/Magic 93.1 night dude slash morning show host “Big Boy” Evan Rose wound up in Detroit – where he’s stirring up a media frenzy. Tuesday, Rose did a “When will Britney die” stunt on his WKQI/Channel 95-5 night show. The Detroit News reports the stunt involved a pool for the time and date of Britney’s death. The winner would get $1,000.
Ironically, the station’s morning co-host is set to host a fundraiser for suicide prevention this week – and was very vocal about his displeasure at the stunt and station management:
“I was personally embarrassed. For months I’ve been working on this walk, and it’s going to be difficult to get up in front of (suicide) survivors and their families representing the radio station that allowed this to happen,” morning host “Spike” told the News.
Rose hangs on to his gig, for now at least.
Detroit Free Press columnist John Smyntek has a cynical take on the whole affair .
WKQI (a Clear Channel station) put up this website during the Tuesday stunt… but yanked it Wednesday morning.
Edit: I got rid of that ugly Britney screencap because it made my eyes hurt. You can now find it here.
Real Classy. I wish all the media jerks that seem to swarm around her all the time would “off” themselves …that would improve the gene pool somewhat…and perhaps give us all the chance to see what else is making real news…. Give us all a break!
So, are they claiming that “Big Boy” came up with this all by himself and that management wasn’t consulted/involved? Bullshit. There’s no way that a “contest” like this would go on the air without legal getting involved. After all, there was $1000 supposedly up for grabs. Corporations never allow a contest to go forward without the lawyers vetting all the rules, etc.
I wouldn’t do a death pool on Brit herself, but maybe one on her career. Oh, wait – it flatlined shortly after the MTV VMA’s.
Tick, tock. Tick, tock.

So, if the management of Clear Channel and/or WKQI gave permission for this contest to proceed, I think they should face consequences for their negligence in doing so. If I were the station manager or the big shot at Clear Channel, heads would roll. How stupid does one have to be do such a thing?
Well, that’s an excellent question, Buster.
