Tooker to take on Hooker. No. Really.

Don Day | December 8, 2007

KZMG/Magic 93.1 is flushing its short-lived Music Mornings show with Valentine for a new show featuring Dan Tooker. Yes… Tooker in the Morning. It rhymes with Hooker in the morning.

Anyway — Tooker comes to Magic after leaving country station KFDI/Witchita, KS earlier this year. Tooker won the Personality of the Year in a Medium Market prize at the Country Music Awards this year — several months after KFDI declined to renew Tooker’s contract. KFDI is a Journal Broadcast Group station.

Tooker has a wife and 5-year-old child. He’s worked at KKDM/Des Moines, KFRX/Lincoln, KLYV/Dubuque, WIBC/Indianapolis, KHKI/Des Moines, KJYO/Oklahoma City, KTOK/Oklahoma City, KMLE/Phoenix, WYCT/Pensacola – and KFDI.

Here’s the demo reel.

I’m told both Bike & Skate in the morning and Ben Kass and John Timstone were unavailable.

Nobody “flushed” anything. More like putting the morning show in a holding pattern.

I wonder if he will use a different name. *shrug*

Did Tara move back to Idaho Falls also?

bigger question….since a CMA award winning morning man is in the building, how nervous do you think the Mees and Cory and Deb are right now? Tooker’s preferred format is country, this might just be a way to get a foot in the door and wait it out for another opportunity at one of the two country stations. Just a thought, especially if contracts are coming up.

I like the comment about radio is a small world because I have some inside scoop. I have a friend that was across town when Tooker was in Wichita. My friend works for Tooker’s best friend (The PD for Bob FM). Tooker has a great rep and he is a true radio guy. KFDI wanted him to sign a long term deal and it was pretty well known he didn’t like the town. I guess he was REALLY honest with Journal and they hosed him as well as his entire show. I think Citadel is VERY lucky to get him. He interviewed in many Major markets but chose Boise for some reason. My friend said his deal is that he will do whatever it takes to win fairly and isn’t worried about what other people in the market do. His only cross to bare is he moves around a lot and his year in Phoenix. I agree he won’t be at Magic long and I don’t think Hooker is the target. He won a CMA after leaving a station. I’m not sure but that doesn’t happen often. Country is where his heart is. Keep in mind Tooker worked with KQFC’s PD in Des Moines.

    Uhh. Lots?

Scott & Matt… then Scott, Matt & Erica… then Jayar Big Boy & Erica… ummm – then just Jayar & Big Boy… Then I think they hired Baylie – then flushed that all for Shamus and Tara – then added Brad, then dropped Shamus – then went to Valentine….. ?

So Nine? I think that all happened during this site’s existance… so I’m sure I could dig for the real answer.

I think the answer is closer to 11, if you count all the times they dropped just one person and tried to make it work out.

All I know is I’m glad they fired that Bambi guy.
