KZMG/Magic 93.1 debuted new morning show “Dan Tooker in the Morning” today. During the 7am hour, Boise Mayor Dave Bieter joined Tooker, Matt Johnson and Casey Acevedo in studio. The group talked about things Tooker should do to become an official Boisean — riding the Tour Train, etc. He also talked about how he and his wife plan to retired in Boise.
Magic’s clearly trying to take an adult turn - emphasizing the play with “family friendly” sweepers. Overall, the show was engaging. Also, DanTooker.com got a “Magic” makeover.
Over on KSAS/103.3 Kiss FM - the other ‘ooker - Hooker in the Morning was giving away tickets to a Hannah Montana movie showing. The difference couldn’t have been more stark.
It looks like KZMG is trying to remake itself in the Hot AC mold. The station’s top 10 songs are more like KCIX than KSAS. But will Tooker be able to steal enough listeners from Mike & Kate, Hooker and the ether to be successful? Guess we’ll know in August…

listened to a little bit of tooker with the gov today… gotta say, it was really actually pretty boring.
hope he brings it a little more or he’ll never make it long enough to take Corey and Debi’s job!

I was also listening the morning that the Gov, was on with Tooker. I was switching back and forth between him and Mike and Kate……Kind of interesting, at almost the same exact time that Tooker was talking to the gov., Mike and Kate were talking about being invited to the Govenors ball, and what they should wear and how Mike should act etc….It was the classic difference of talking about your market and being a part of the market.
It’s not Tookers fault, but it will be very hard to make in roads against Mike and Kate, they really do live the lifestyle and are extremely involved in every aspect of the treasure valley. Kate’s single and lives the young single livestyle, Mike is married with 7 kids of all different ages, and he lives that lifesyle. Plus they have the added advantage of living here really for a long time, and knowing everybody. They don’t have to ask what they need to do to become a bosean, they’ve already done it and have moved on to being a real part of the listeners lives.
I wish Tooker good luck, maybe he has something to bring to the table that is much better than we heard the first week, because, to this listener, if he doesn’t he’s not gonna be able to beat Mike and Kate and within a year it will be back to battling the other ooker and trying to beat Kiss again. Whatever the case, it will be an uphill battle. Who knows, at the very least, even if he can’t win in the ratings, maybe he makes everybody better just being on air…….that’s something at least.
