Was doing news at KTFI in Twin Falls around 1990 when I had to read a story from "Weippe." Gulp. Found out later from a college buddy how I should have pronounced his home town of WEE-ipe. Not wipey.

I could give you a million dollar bill....LOLOL. Of course you being involved or having been involved in radio know the old twist.

I love this discussion. For those trying to pronounce Malheur County, Oregon......It is NOT Mall-er. I don't know if I can spell it phonetically...I give up trying to spell it phonetically. I will let others on this forum who are much more creative than I take a run at it.

Pete Gregory! I haven't heard from you in years! I was a little squirt cutting my teeth on the air when you worked at KID. I remember hearing you got shot at a few years back. Best wishes, Ben Reed

Add Melba to this list. I have heard it pronounced Meal-bah, Meb-lah, Me-el-bah, etc.
Moscow is pronounced "Moss -coe", not "Moss-cow".
Caldwell is pronounced "Called-well" not "Call-well".

Mr. Morgan,
What is the grand prize for correctly responding to inquiry regarding the location of the New York Canal and the origin of the name? I sure could use a million dollars.
Please allow me to refer you to the following PDF file: http://www.idahohistory.net/Reference%20Series/0190.pdf. This document refers to the New York capitalists who conceptualized and developed the New York Canal style system in the area.
The website http://www.usbr.gov/dataweb/html/boise.html#general discusses the role the New York Canal plays in disseminating irrigation water from Lucky Peak to Lake Lowell.
Website imnh.isu.edu/digitalatlas/hydr/cnlsirr/cnli1.htm - features photos of the construction of the New York Canal supplied by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the Idaho Historical Society.
