East Idaho gets a dose of Magic
Don Day | February 25, 2008Sand Hill Media launched a new station – KQPI/Magic 99. The station takes KQPI for calls, and is owned by Chris Devine’s College Creek. Our E. Idaho spy notes that a rumored move to Sand Hill Media may be upcoming.
The station positions as “East Idaho’s Hit Music Station,” and I’m told the format sounds quite a bit like KZDX/99.9 The Buzz in the Magic Valley

Looking to get in contact with “Real Bob Ziel” in Rigby, Idaho and discuss our ancestry.

This is the real bob Ziel you can reach me at bobginger@cableone.net
You can find him at 98.1 KGTM.
New country 99.5 10.000 songs i put the transmitter in and that,s what it,s the format is D.E sandhill radio.
Gary, where is the transmitter? Howard Mountain?
Who is 99.5 co-located with?
I think they have already played 9,999 songs when will 99.5 hit it’s 10,000th song?
The transmitter is located on Kimport Peak. No other FM’s are up there.
What is the elevation on Kinport Peak? It’s got to be quite a bit higher than Howard I would think. 7200 feet maybe? Why is 99.5 the only FM on Kinport?
The WWW claims that KUER’s translator is on that peak as well. Perhaps the site just didn’t have a quality line of sight from downtown Pocatello (where the local FM studios are), or years ago, it did not have adequate electrical service.
That would be interesting to know, “need to know” – Google does have a topographical map of the peak.
Elevation for kinport peak is on the fcc.gov site goto fm query and type in KQPI that should tell you all you need to know. Fm translator could be on the peak but not in our site. Line of sight is very good from kinport to all of pocatello the erp is a big 2.2 kw get,s out good for that kind of power. D.E sandhill
so what happened to dick howe he gave me my first radio job and taught me about floating checks… if your out there mr howe you did make good on the checks and it was a fun time im my life. thanks for the job and all the girls that whent along with the job. greg
Acctually, I did work at KADQ with Dick Howe. It was my second time at the Q and I did days there while still working nights at KID-AM. And was selling for both stations. Something that would never happen in these days, but a lot of fun and the money was outrageous. Somehow, Dick never floated a check to me…..

Roundman!
Great to see you surface. Hope all is well with you and your family. The Dick Howe days– we should write a book.
Roundman, Never officially met you, but listened to you on KID and then worked there a couple years after you quit. I then heard you on KUTR when I left to work in Logan. Nice to hear from you again. You were a great jock!
Former Prompter-we could write a book about Dick Howe, but if the publisher gave us a check, would it clear? Part of me wants to say that you left the Q to go to KCPX in SLC. Would that be correct? If so, you sounded great on both the Q and KCPX-FM.
elchupacabras-thank you for your kind comments. Maybe someday we can work at the same place at the same time, which would be a blast. We obviously have a great commonality in one B. Rand Nickell! Su**s what happend with him over at B-106. Wish I could get him down here.

Roundman: I defected to the dark side post Q (local television). I spent a number of years doing local radio sports play-by-play for KRXK and others, KUPI, KID before I went to t.v. full time. In fact, worked with elchupacabras for a number of years at Idaho8 (KIFI) in the mid-90’s. I did all sorts of different time slots at the Q- mornings then it was Karen Demming then you then someone else in the evening (can’t remember who). then I went to evenings later on. Man, that was a LONG time ago!
actually…don’t miss b106 one bit. i guess it’s still the 80s, because sales apparently runs programming. kgtm is the closest thing to music on terrestrial radio in this valley…i will always have a soft spot in my hea…heart for east idaho’s last “oldies” station (insert “taps” here.)
Former Prompter
Did you also do sales?
B Rand: Nice to see a post from you buddy! Hope things are going well. Give me a holler sometime. Too bad KGTM doesn’t pick up Scott Shannon’s True Oldies Channel, there are a lot of deep cuts in there!
dear el…;
p. e. may be forced into something like shannon, but current managerial thought is what forced them into the ’80s, basically going head to head with arrow, except for
r&b cuts.
i’m an oldies purist, which puts me massively out-of-step with the ever-attritive sound of comtemporary “öldies” radio. even scott shannon’s channel has moved deeper and deeper into the 70s, although to this point he has set the cutoff approx. 1979. i used to listen to him on 860 in salt lake city before returning to east idaho.
other topic…i’d like to start a vintage east idaho radio blog. does such a thing already exist? anyone else interested?
Count me in! Let’s do a vintage blog!
Roundman-
Yes- did sales, production, everything. You remember how it was. I did play-by-play sports w/Merill Lundberg until he moved on and then I took over for him. Send a note to Don and I’ll give him my personal email to give to you.

dear flavor;
as i am functioning idiot where computers (and other things) are concerned, i am clueless regarding how to begin one. if you want, contact me at nuthinbutnet55@gmail.com.

dear contributors;
brn again. does anyone know of parties holding vintage trade publications?
i am seeking pre-1974 cashbox, record world and music vendor magazines, to create a database of lesser known titles in various musical genres.
if you have any to offer (sell, trade, loan), see the above email.
september is a month with an “r” in it, and so are the months that follow it, so if you’ve been holding an oyster in your mouth all summer, now is the time to swallow it.
