Statesman goes to the dogs

Don Day | February 11, 2008

Oh brother.

An obituary for a dog that ran in the obituary section of the Sunday Idaho Statesman was published inadvertently, Statesman Sales and Marketing Director Travis Quast said.

“The newspaper does not accept pet obituaries in the obituary section and we sincerely apologize to the families and anyone who may have taken offense to the placement of this pet obituary,” Quast said.

Pet obituaries and in-memoriam ads are accepted and placed on an individual basis in other sections of the newspaper.

For information on placing such ads, call 209-377-6333.

Notice they got their own phone number wrong?

Peak, Citadel look to settle

Don Day | February 9, 2008

The Citadel Broadcasting v. Peak Broadcasting lawsuit could be history by the time spring blooms. The two sides scheduled a settlement conference for March 10 in front of Judge Mikel H. Williams. The settlement would put the nearly year-long litigation between the two sides to rest.

You’ll remember that Citadel sued Peak and several of its representatives last year alleging a slew of things – centered on the defection of several employees from Peak to Citadel.

An annoyingly cryptic remidner of policy

Don Day | February 8, 2008

…Idaho Radio News does not post information on people charged with a crime unless they have been convicted. This has been policy since day one here – and something I have to stick with. So yeah… there’s the crypic note of the morning.

You can always e-mail me at idahoradio@gmail.com if you have concerns or questions about this rule of the road.

KIZN, KQFC revamp sites

Don Day | February 7, 2008

KIZN/Kissin’ 92.3 retired its old website for a new KIZN.com – powered by the MediaSpan network. Looks like they’re still moving all the furniture in – since it doesn’t appear to have nearly as much content as the old-school site.

KQFC/97.9 KQFC also overhauled its site.

Kiss FM polishes website

Don Day | February 7, 2008

KSAS/103.3 Kiss FM has given its website a polish – with video search, news feeds, weather and more actual content — 1033kissfm.com

(Sorta-disclosure: They’re pulling a news feed from KTVB.COM, my employer)

BlueLine flatlines

Don Day | February 7, 2008

The Idaho Ad Agencies blog notes that BlueLine Grassroots Marketing has been dragged to the recycle bin. Blueline is the agency that told clients that advertising was bad – and that promotion and advertising should come free. Well, except for the fees BlueLine charged.

They had talented people – many of whom have landed elsewhere

Ratings: Time to stick a fork in one of the rockers?

Don Day | February 4, 2008

KJOT/J-105 dropped to its worst performance since 2002 – with a 3.2 overall rating, while KKGL/96.9 The Eagle slipped to a 4.5. Mix in KQXR, which also fell from a 4.6 to a 3.7, and you have three rock stations with mediocre ratings (not to mention KRVB, which was up this book – but is also in the 3 point range).

Time to try something new with one of these frequencies?

Ratings: KBOI’s weeble-wobbling ways

Don Day | February 4, 2008

KBOI/News-Talk 670 has long had a problem. In the fall, ratings spike — during its broadcasts of Boise State football.

Fall 07 – 6.9
Fall 06 – 7.0
Fall 05 – 7.1
Fall 04 – 6.4

You look at those numbers and see a strong, top of the pile station. But when you examine the spring numbers, the picture changes.

Spring 07 – 4.6
Spring 06 – 4.4
Spring 05 – 4.3
Spring 04 – 5.2

Still decent numbers – but not as strong as those fall ratings. If KBOI were to lose the Boise State athletics rights, the picture for this Boise radio stalwart could change dramatically.

Ratings: Spanish bouncing

Don Day | February 4, 2008

We’ve been closely watching the Spanish-language stations in the Treasure Valley – which collectively had a strong spring book. With the fall numbers, the stations fell back to earth:

- KWEI-FM fell from 1.1 to 0.7.
- KDBI-FM fell from a 3.8 to 0.9
- KQTA charted for the first time at 0.7.

Ratings: WOW’s got traction

Don Day | February 4, 2008

KAWO/WOW Country 104.3 began to see its numbers rise – to a 3.7 in the fall, versus a 2.0 last spring. The Peak-owned station is still the country caboose, with KIZN/Kissin’ 92.3 topping the chart with a 6.3 and KQFC at a 5.4.

Ratings: Bob doubles, where’s The Man?

Don Day | February 4, 2008

KSRV/96.1 Bob FM attained a 3.0 rating – up 100% from its 1.5 in the spring. Whether or not the station can build momentum is the big question.

You might have noticed something missing though — there’s no data for KTMB/99.1 The Man.

Ratings: Did Jon & Chris help… KIDO

Don Day | February 4, 2008

KIDO/News Radio 580 had a solid book – with its best numbers since 2004, landing at a 6.3 in the 12+ numbers. KFXD/ All Talk 63 didn’t fare as well – with a .9 rating – its worst performance since at least 1998. Its been suggested that perhaps the diary system is benefiting Jon & Chris – since the duo used to be on KIDO/630 AM. At the end of the day though, does Peak care?

Ratings: Lots of red ink

Don Day | February 4, 2008

In the 12+ numbers – it seems like no one did well. KTHI, KIZN, KCIX, KKGL, KQXR, KXLT, KZMG, KJOT, KFXD and KWEI saw declines from spring to fall. KBOI, KQFC, KIDO, KDBI, KSAS, KRVB and KAWO went up.

Ratings: Workin’ on it…

Don Day | February 2, 2008

If you’ve watched the news…. you’ll understand why I haven’t had a chance to break down the numbers. I’ll get to that soon. In the meantime, comment away on the prior post.

Who SHOULD get the BSU rights?

Don Day | February 1, 2008

Last month – I asked who you thought would get the BSU radio rights. The clear winner was Citadel – with more than 55% of the vote.

Now, a little different question:

What format do you think you WILL hear
