Chris & Paul J. come in at 4 am and scan the newspaper with their morning coffee just like most everyone else does in the morning. They are not necessarily reporting news. They are simply commenting and gaging opinion of news during their show.
The show serves as an opinion forum and not necessarily a hard news source.

What's sad is I can most of the time read news stories in the Statesman, and turn on the radio and hear the same word for word. What happened to news departments?

Hey Survivor, agree with you in part. I do think NPR has some good news but they suffer from the "Bob Edwards Syndrome!" You have to have a nasal infection, no mic processor and leave more spaces in between stories than Paul Harvey ever did! I like public radio, but can't stand it because the presentation. Granted, Bob Edwards is gone and it is a little better, but it seems like even when commercial casters cross over the NPR or PBS (Judy Woodruff for example), they loose that tight feel. I am not saying you have to scream the news, but cut the damn pauses and keep it tight.

"I don’t think news today could get away with it. I’d love to see someone try…"

The Beatles and Elvis are still playing somewhere, 24 hours a day. You can buy a brand-new powder blue VW Beetle. Why not bring back 20/20 news? It'll be Retro Radio.

As for quality radio news, well, I'll always be a partisan for public radio. I still think NPR and company do a great job. Local public radio stations go all over the board, the smaller ones can be quite dull at times. That includes the one that used to employ me.

What do you want -- a naked Jenna Jameson delivering news??? Educating the public about community issues isn't exactly glamorous.
I will have to admit I'd rather look at some of the great looking news women we have in the Boise TV market as opposed to Paul J.'s bald spot.

I'll never forget the time I was evaluated by a consultant in 1992, working at KBLQ FM in Logan, Utah. (I was news director at the time). The consultant told me that I sounded like a CKLW news announcer 20 years ago. He told me I didn't fit into "today's style." I told him that was the greatest complement anybody could pay me, and quit a week later. Fortunately, my style fits with Spanish announcing very well, and yes, when I record spots, I shake my hands and jump around just as they did.

Big difference between 20/20 News and the news of today: they weren't PC about their reporting. Yes, it was meant to be entertaining (it actually WAS news as 20 years Ago said), but if someone was dead they weren't afraid to say someone had assumed room temperature. Watch or listen to the average newscast and it's designed purely to not piss off the advertisers.

Actually, the neat thing about this was that is was NEWS. Now the "news" is a lot of sound bites about nothing, bad writing, grammer, and a lot of sensationalist stuff. Use Paris Hilton as your roll model. It seems that many stations are using the same stories and ideas as the other stations and there isn't anything cutting-edge anymore. We get clean-up versions of crimes by press officers; cautious exposes of corruption (with all fear given to a possible lawsuit); and political news from the likes of Dennis Miller (Entertainer), Bill Reilly (who has an adgenda), and Michael Savage (nut). It would be nice to think we could actually get first hand, bias-free coverage by someone who is a little more literate than the average Joe on the street.

When Lee Marshall and I started (on the same day) at KCBQ in San Diego and when we later left -- he for CKLW and me for KFRC -- we worked in actual news DEPARTMENTS. As someone on the video noted, these departments often employed more on-air folks than some station CLUSTERS employ in Boise today. Unfortunately for listeners the news staffs of even the largest clusters in Boise can likely be counted with the fingers of one hand.

That said, 20/20 News was a wild, creative ride which, while probably not playable today, was an energizing experience and the father of memories that will never fade. I'm grateful for having had the opportunity to be part of it.
