Dina Jewel out at KIDO?

Don Day | May 28, 2008

I’ve received several questions asking where Dina Jewel has gone – she hasn’t been appearing on KIDO’s First Morning News of late. Is the change permanent?

Dina has long hosted the show’s “fitness facts” segment – back to the days when Jon & Chris were on the station.

Radio choices on election night

Don Day | May 28, 2008

NPR News 91, KBOI/News Talk 670 and KIDO/NewsRadio 580 covered last night’s Idaho primary election. That shouldn’t be a big deal – except for the fact that just a year and a half ago, the then-Clear Channel-owned property (KIDO) opted to bag out of the 2006 general election, instead choosing to wrap up the coverage the next morning.

Journal sees April revenue slip

Don Day | May 28, 2008

Journal Communications, parent of JBG and the collection of Boise assets (KRVB, KTHI, KGEM, KCID, KJOT, KQXR and KIVI/KSAW) saw April revenue slip in both its print and broadcasting divisions. Publishing dropped 6.2% from the same period a year ago, while the TV/radio side of the ledger fell 4.3%. Weakness in Vegas, Ft. Myers and Tucson was cite for the loss.

The company also noted “softness in all of our radio markets except Omaha.”

Sources tell IRN that the Boise operations are under a hiring freeze – and the company cut at least one on-air talent.

It’s been a string of bad news for media companies with local operations – including Citadel, McClatchy, Belo . Even Fisher announced it would sell its swanky Fisher Plaza at the base of the Space Needle in Seattle.

Cutbacks pinch KTSY

Don Day | May 28, 2008

The economy is at best uncertain – and gas prices are on the rise. So you have to cut back… where to slice? How about that contribution to the otherwise-free service that is your local Christian radio station.

The slowdown hit KTSY/89.5 FM – which is pulling back on expenses, including the services of afternoon voicetracker Dave Arthur. Dave’s been holding down the mid-day fort from Portland – and will sign off this Friday.

“I have nothing but the utmost respect for GM Mike Agee and PD Jerry Woods and feel for what they have to go through right now,” Dave told Idaho Radio News. “Now I have extra time… if anyone needs voice help, let me know!”

Hit him up at dave@greattracks.com

KBOI’s hot spot

Don Day | May 28, 2008

KBOI/News Talk 670 has a new TV ad that features a gentleman leaving his house and getting in his car. The vehicle then sprouts wings, flies over the home – and down I-84. For a local CGI job, it is pretty well done. And I could be wrong – but it looks like former KCID/KNIN/KSAS guy Brad Roen is the actor in the ad.

The spot touts KBOI’s traffic coverage.

More from Margo

Don Day | May 28, 2008

KTHI/107.1 K-Hits morning co-host has another blog entry – thanking folks for participating in the Race for the Cure. She notes that events like this do more than just raise spirits – they have a direct impact:

I now know first hand what good the monies raised from events like that do. A Stage 3 breast cancer years ago would have left me far worse for the wear if it weren’t for the tremendous strides in treatments they’ve made. And it’s not done without proper funding. Thanks to all those individuals and companies and the volunteers who raise those dollars

Update: As noted, the concert is June 6th (06/06…)

KZMG’s illegal legal

Don Day | May 28, 2008

KZMG/Magic 93.1 has a few new jingles on the air. One seems to be serving as a legal ID – except… it isn’t legal.

The jingle starts with “KZMG!” followed by the station’s positioner (“today’s hit music”) the brand name (“Magic 93.1″) and a promo for the AM shift (“Home of Dan Tooker in the morning!”) – followed (finally) by its primary and secondary cities of license (New Plymouth, Boise).

That would not be a proper station identification, as outlined by the FCC:

Official station identification includes the station’s call letters, followed by the community specified in its license as the station’s location. Between the call letters and its community, the station may insert the name of the licensee, the station’s channel number, and/or its frequency. It may also include any additional community or communities, as long as it first names the community to which it is licensed by the FCC.

In this case, the standard form would be “KZMG, New Plymouth Boise” – though the FCC’s wording indicates the station could say something like “KZMG 93.1 FM New Plymouth Boise” — but there’s no allowance for a morning show promo.

Tario falls into the Gap

Don Day | May 24, 2008

R&R reports former Clear Channel Boise VP and one-time CC Twin Falls manager Terry Tario has landed a new gig. Tario will replace Mike Schutta at the helm of GapWest’s properties in Idaho Falls & Pocatello.

“We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Terry’s caliber to join our team,” GapWest president Erik Hellum told R&R in a prepared statement. “Not only is he one of the most seasoned and respected broadcasters in the state of Idaho, he is also a great cultural fit for GapWest. With his focus on people, product and a positive workplace, he will lead our team in Idaho Falls and Pocatello to accomplish great things.”

Peak announces BSU radio network affils

Don Day | May 23, 2008

My KTVB.COM story is below. Interesting to note that Peak is partnering with Impact Radio for coverage in parts of the state…

BOISE – Peak Broadcasting has outlined its new Bronco Sports Radio Network, which will bring coverage across three states on a total of eight stations.

Football and men’s basketball games will air on stations from Tri-Cities, WA to Pocatello and many points in between.

Peak obtained the rights this spring, with a bid that beat out long-time home KBOI 670 AM. KBOI had a larger signal pattern – but with the new affiliates, Peak Broadcasting will reach a wider geographic area.

“This unprecedented coverage and promotion of BSU Sports will make these exciting games available to more people than ever before,” Peak Broadcasting SVP Kevin Godwin said in a prepared statement.

The stations in the network will be:

- KIDO 580 AM Boise
- KSNQ 98.3 FM Twin Falls
- KWIK 1240 AM Pocatello
- KID 590 AM Idaho Falls
- KYZK 107.5 Sun Valley
- KMXM 101.1 FM McCall
- KSRV 1380 AM Ontario, OR
- KALE 960 AM Tri-Cities, WA

(Related: View the combined coverage map – PDF)

The new network of stations does not include the Spokane area – but Peak says additional stations may be announced in the future. Football games aired in the Spokane area last fall as part of Boise State’s deal with KBOI.

Peak Broadcasting also told Boise State in its initial proposal that it intended to broadcast the games in Spanish on KWEI in the Boise area.

A search for a play-by-play team for the games is currently underway. Peak officially takes over the rights this summer, and will broadcast its first game August 30th when Boise State’s football team takes on Idaho State at 5:30 p.m.

Johansson debuts single

Don Day | May 19, 2008

Not really much of a local radio tie here (except that Johnstone and Deeds played it last night on KRVB/94.9 The River’s “The Other Studio”) – but this is… something else.

It’s Scarlett Johansson’s “Falling Down” from her forthcoming album. Really.

Journal CEO: No plans to go private

Don Day | May 19, 2008

At Journal Communications’ annual meeting earlier this month, CEO Steven Smith told a crowd that there is no plan to take the newspaper/TV/radio conglomerate private. Smith bought back nearly 20 million shares, leading to the speculation, according to the Associated Press.

The AP’s wording does seem to leave the door open a crack, however:

…Smith told shareholders at the company’s annual meeting in Milwaukee that talk of the company going private is only speculation and the board has no immediate plans to do so.

Lee Family appologizes for Reed’s comments

Don Day | May 19, 2008

The South Idaho Press reports today that Lee Family Broadcasting apologized to parents of Minico High School for a series of incidents over the past two weeks.

The statement ran on all of Lee Family’s stations Friday, and was issued by Kim Lee. KFTA host Ben Reed encouraged students to protest after a teacher threw away a Mexican flag at Minico High earlier this month. The situation escalated with counter-protests, and the arrest of a student for threatening violence at the school.

“Even though the remarks made on KFTA were the wrong choice, the radio station provides a voice for the Latino population of this area,” the apology reads.

The apology concluded with this, according to SIP:

“To display another nation’s flag in the home in respect for one’s ancestors should not be of concern to anyone, but when it comes to public display at parades, schools, public offices, etc. there should be only one ’Old Glory’!!”
