WOW’s Discovery Channel spoof

Don Day | May 1, 2008

The creative folks at KAWO/WOW Country 104.3 put their own spin on a new ad branding campaign by the Discovery Channel. The Discovery ads tag with “The World is Just Awesome” and stand out from the crowd. The WOW ads are similar in style and tag with “Idaho… it’s just awesome”

First the Discovery ad — then the KAWO spin.

It was so nice of the people at the Discovery Channel to come up with this idea for this radio station. Saves the station all that time and money in coming up with an original idea. Besides, it’s Boise. Who knows the difference?

Oh, that’s right, MikeR… Small, non-corporate radio stations aren’t allowed to have any fun. Whatever. I keep forgetting, in this town, if you are not Citadel or Journal, you suck. Give me a break.

You don’t have to be a corporate station to have original ideas. And since when is the purpose of marketing to have fun? This commercial by Wow isn’t a spoof; it’s a rip-off. To spoof is to imitate something in a mocking manner. This Wow commercial simply copies the concept, form, and detail of the Discovery Channel ad as if Wow had generated it all on its own. It’s small time, like a high school skit. It’s like if the West Side Drive-in decided to copy Wendy’s famous “Where’s the Beef” ad.

You’re a country music station. It’s not all that hard to come up with an original ad.

You seem to be the only one that hates it. They put their own spin on it, and people like it. It’s not like they used scenes of Portland or Las Vegas here… They used Boise and the Treasure Valley. WOW country is ALL about having fun! Apparently you don’t listen.

It absolutely amazes me how much butt kissing some do here with regards to Citadel and Journal. Anytime Peak trys something “out of the box”, some seem to get their pretty plume ruffled. Lead, follow, or get out of the way… When it comes to moving things to another level, Peak is doing it, the rest are not.

What is it they say? Arguing on the internet is like winning the Special Olympics.

Win or loose, you’re still… hmmm, I can’t remember that last part.
