Peak gets top pick scooped out from under it

Dave Koehn is the new voice of the Broncos.

That’s what Peak Broadcasting officials and Boise State honchos hoped to announce eight days ago. Unfortunately, Koehn had other plans. He won’t be packing his bags and moving from Texas to the City of Trees — instead he’s headed the other direction to take over play-by-play for the University of Virginia Cavaliers.

The guy in charge of the UVA decision said big things about Koehn: “We feel we have a real star in the making.” So who will be Boise State’s rising star?

The Idaho Daily Statesman’s Brian Murphy said the school had its list narrowed down to four finalists. A well-placed source indicates Koehn was the top pick. Now Kevin Godwin and Gene Bleymaier are trying to figure out who to throw the job to now. Godwin was clearly overly confident in telling the media that a pick would likely be named by June 20th — eight days and counting ago.

Applications were due to a talent scouting firm by April 28th - two months ago today. The season starts in two months and two days. Let’s assume that it takes three weeks for the new hire to get here - that leaves just a month to become an expert on Bronco Football and build chemistry with the also-unnamed color analyst.

There’s still a lot of people cheesed off about the way Paul J. Schneider was treated in this whole mess, especially after Idaho Radio News first reported Boise State’s interest in bumping him from the top job. Now Peak & BSU are facing an ever tougher battle to find the right person as a salve for the open wound ripped open last fall with some of the Bronco faithful.

Also: Someone might want to clue the Statesman kids in about the change in radio stations (look closely):

Well, yah, I say this entire thing is working out really well for all concerned. I mean what a really organized, well planned situation for everyone. Perhaps Peak should change its name to Fly By The Seat Of The Pants Broadcasting Corporation…. I am not even a Bronco fan and I am starting to become more and more interested in this situation. I pitty all former BSU radio listener/ fans (seriously)…what a joke this seems to have evolved into. Paul J. must be laughing his rear end off over this entire affair. That or he is weeping for what was once a really well produced and dedicated broadcast sports program. Well, I guess it will all work out for the best in time… and that is what its going to take….some time to iron this thing out and hopefully make it work. Oh, and that thing with the “local” paper….does not surprise me a bit.

I think you’re being a little harsh, but I’ve come to expect that from you guys. The fact is, having made their choice, Peak and the University put all their efforts into coming up with a compensation package that was acceptable to all, not working on a “plan B”. Koehn decides to take the UVA gig at the 11th hour and leaves Peak and BSU holding the bag. Would this be the case if Koehn had the integrity to tell everybody up-front that BSU was his 2nd or 3rd or whatever choice? Probably not. But afterall, he’s “talent” and we all know they’re never wrong, so it must be managment’s fault.

P.S. What do you expect from a paper that runs corrections as a daily feature?

Running daily corrections is how the Statesman has become known as the Idaho Daily Mistaken. To be fair, I have seen more corrections in the Tribune lately too.
I agree that Koehn may be partly to blame. But when someone promises that an announcement is going to be made and it isn’t made, I’d leave for a better paying gig too.
This is Bleymaier & Godwin’s mess. They have a bit over a month to fix it or Mr. Bleymaier may find himself doing play-by-play. That would be embarrassing for Boise State and Peak.
Can we bring Howard Cosell back from the dead???

Hahahaha… We all know who Idaho’s #1 website for news and information *really* is :)

Should have tried using a slightly more difficult font to screw with in their banner…

Having inside knowledge at BSU…..you are all wrong. No where was it said that Dave Koehn is or was the number one pick. He was one of 5 who was given the tour of the facility. I would also bet that come Jult 1st, the legal order to stop using BSU’s Bronco’sname on the van, Banners and ads will be coming…and thy will all be headed back to court.

    Ray,
If what you say is true, then the Statesman needs to be held responsible for promoting incorrect information. They were my source of information in this matter. Another strike for the Idaho Daily Mistaken.
