Odd ‘Man’ out?
Don Day | July 26, 2008The Man experiment is about to end. A well-connected tipster says the year-long tryout of KTMB/99.1 The Man will end soon – with KQLZ/Idaho’s True Oldies Channel moving to the superior 99.1 slot (from 100.7). The big question mark is the fate of the 100.7 frequency. Also, would KTIK try to find a spot for Dan Patrick, which is currently on The Man – and not part of the station’s ESPN package?
Look for the Oldies switch as July turns to August.

When “The Man” started I listened once or twice, but nothing caught me. I wasn’t really sure Boise was ready for that type of programming. Tom Lycus (sp)is kind of a one trick pony. If you’ve heard one show, you’ve heard them all.
It would be nice, though, if Big Jack and Bryan were on a better frequency. The format is a lot more interesting than “The Man”.
As we all knew, “The Man” wouldn’t last…
I tried to listen to “The Man” and give it an honest assessment. All I heard was a lot of meaningless dribble and teenage, sophomoric humor.
I hope KTIK will put Dan Patrick on from 10 – 1, Tirico & Van Pelt from 1 – 3 or 4, and then Caves & Prater. At least that would be intellectual sports talk instead of listening to some nerd talk about how the WNBA has impacted his sex life.
Well it was never going to fly as a lucritive radio station, but I’m still kinda sad to hear that news.
I really enjoyed listening to Adam Carolla in the morning, but I’m confident that Dan Patrick will be picked up by somebody.
Love Leykis too, but Rainshadow is right, it’s the same show everyday.
Hasta la Vista ‘El Hombre’
…KQLZ/Idaho’s True Oldies Channel moving to the superior 99.1 slot (from 107.1)…
I assume you meant: (from 100.7)
By the way, what makes the 99.1 slot superior? Both 99.1 and 100.7’s signals originate from the same transmitter site at the same elevation with the same power output. Both also have boosters to better cover Boise, from Table Rock.
About “The Man”…
I have to admit, the idea of “The Man” is reasonably cool, but the programming I’ve heard thus far hasn’t interested me much. If it flipped formats, I wouldn’t miss it.
I think that if True Oldies were to move to 99.1, 100.7 would still be a useful frequency for another format.
Get a real rock station.
How would you define a real rock station?
Yep – too many ones and zeros and dots and such. It’s 100.7, obviously.
Impact really screwed the pooch here. “The Man” was great and had a large following in the treasure valley. Too bad this station was run by idiots.
Honestly, i’m completely sad to see if all go away. I’m sick of oldies stations, there are too many as is anyways. There is ONE station that did talk all day, and now it’s gone….poor decision if you ask me. Part of the problem is in the year that i’ve been here, i’ve seen ONE billboard for the station over by the Maverick on State St. just before you come into Eagle. The problem w/ these small towns (it’s Boise, let’s be honest) is that these local talk shows almost try to go overboard w/ their opinions or have paid callers make obnoxious comments just to try and stir up controversy to make the phone ring…it’s stupid. Adam Carolla is awesome, and while I didn’t listen that much after his show ended, my general consensus is that all the shows after him we’re monotone and boring, hence why they we’re probably put into popular time bracket (morning rush hour, lunch, after work drive, etc). I actually tried calling the radio station on two different occasions to suggest that Tom Leykis be aired live instead of on a delay, but the guy who answered the phone acted like he’d never even heard of Tom and had no idea what I was talking about. The KTMB offices aren’t that far from my house, so I know I was calling the right station. Sure, Tom can tend to be a little repetitive, but then again i’ve turned friends to him that said they same thing UNTIL they actually took the time to listen for more than 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there. Every hour is a different topic/themes, and only two days (Leykis 101 on Thu. and Flash Friday on Fri.) that are the same subject matter….so I highly doubt he’s talking for 12hrs a week on the EXACT same topics, otherwise he’d never be on the radio anymore.
I’m sad to see the station go to get replaced w/ some other format that is so boring and typical. Rainshadow said Boise wasn’t ready for that type of programming, what in the hell does that mean? Are we all children here w/o any balls and scared to mature into big boy formats by getting out of the comfort of our small dinky ass little town? It’s time to grow up and have mature adult talk radio like every other huge metropolitan market area, because eventually we might actually become a big city too…..tongue in cheek ;)
I hope that we never become the big city that M5 James and some others eluded to; I like that Boise is Boise and not SF, LA, SLC, Seattle or Portland. So if that means that we don’t have an audience for something like The Man because we don’t have the population for it, then so be it.
The only way The Man would go off the air if a lot of people were listening is if they violated FCC rules, which I don’t think they did. Business is business and if The Man couldn’t cover their costs then it was because not enough people listened to it, plain and simple. Crying about it won’t make a difference – better marketing and better products will.
