J105 definitely plays the classic rock. The Eagle people must not get out much.

The definition of classic is a twenty year span. Both stations play songs from 1988 and deeper. The X could be considered classic rock to.

Yeah. It means The Eagle is Nampa’s ONLY classic rock station.

J-105 used to be cool. The morning show is now cookie cutter which Journal loves and the imaging is ten years ago. There heritage is going…. going and almost gone. It’s embarrising when I hear Alice in Chains next to a Led song. It’s like plucking gray hairs in an attempt to skew young.You are what you are, people believe that. Be real w/ your programming and folks will follow. Run promos such as “We’re a weak ass station w/ a lame morning show… but please listen cuz I knocked up some ho at the Navajo and I need an lawyer” J lost it’s identity when the Spuds left…prior Spike and Brian… just like the X when Bill and Doug went. Compare the numbers from then and now. The rock stations used to lead in this town and the morning shows ruled. Now it’s a bunch of arrogance fueled by the past. I actually eard an X jock talking about how he took home a stripper from last years X-know one came fest home. Does he not grasp who the average 90% listener is. They have homes, children and probs w/ bills. The last thing on there mind is a primal addiction to a whore. No wonder why their next to last in the ratings.

You brought up the “get a real rock station” issue on a previous blog. I’m seeing a lot of criticism here, but no constructive ideas. I will ask again, Ty. B, how do you define a real rock station?

Pete and Joe do a great job on the 105 morning show. They’re really cool, non-problematic people to work with, too. Please don’t bash them. They just won the ISBA Best Morning Show Award, for one thing. For another, its not their fault that the world of music has changed so much. Thats what’s happening to Radio Rock more than anything else. The audience/world is much different now than in the days of Spike and Brian, or even Byl and Doug. Boise has grown so much….out-growing the small-town radio we knew. The stations change for a reason…mainly, survival. The old ways don’t necessarily work anymore. Everyone has to adapt.

Now that I reflect.. your right. Pete and Joe are gods and the ISBA’s prove that. Small town radio, though is what wins. I hope J 105 does not lose that. Play more Stevie Ray

Remember when Byl and Doug crank called the other morning shows and messed with them. No permission to air it, they just did it. NEVER.. will that kind of fun happen again in today’s world

I’m late to this topic, but wanted to address some of the comments about how radio format has changed. I’m sure there’s a criteria used to classify what constitutes “classic” rock. Ty.B stated that “The definition of classic is a twenty year span.” I’m not sure how accurate or verifiable this statement is, but it seems rather, um, limiting, especially since most of Led Zeppelin’s best music came out in the 70’s. An article in the April 3, 2008 issue of Rolling Stone entitled “Radio’s New Rock Format” referred to a “new” format called “deep cuts.” From what I can gather, it’s the closest thing to what radio once was. Not so much a “Bob-FM” thing, which to me is a totally random and difficult-to-follow format, but more along the lines of a musical journey, with gradual peaks and valleys before the destination. Emmis Communications is the entity responsible for attempting to bring back the deep playlist format. I think it could work quite well – put a Shawn Mullins song after a Todd Snider tune, then chase it with Neil Young or U2… Drag in something from the new Night Ranger CD, follow it with “Seasons of Wither” by Aerosmith… Anyway, it was a very informative article, and I urge all y’all to find it and read it, if you’re inclined to do so. Radio HAS changed, but it doesn’t have to suck.

Have you seriously checked the ratings lately Ty B.? Last time I took a look, I didn’t see any problems. Maybe the real problem isn’t the stations losing their identity, maybe, just maybe, it’s that you’ve gotten old. It happens. Maybe the X will never be as cool as Pirate Radio. Besides, the time frame you are referring to, K106 pretty much owned this town. Ask Mr. Bass.

You take a poo all over J105, then all your examples are about the X. If you are refering to the good old days with the Spud Brothers, or Doug and Byl, I’m sure about 15 minutes worth of research would show you there were SO many problems taking place behind the scenes the stations pretty much took the actions they did. All three examples you listed all went to other radio stations with their schtick, and didn’t last there either.

Why is playing an Alice In Chains song next to a Zeppelin song embarrassing? Are you as embarrassed when you hear a Hall & Oates song next to a Daughtry song like on other stations? The only arrogance I’m hearing is coming out of your mouth. Check yourself.

Deep cuts… Not really a new term.

I always thought “The River” was a ‘deep cuts’ station. :-)

Also, if one really wants to hear that type of station, Bonneville gives two options online – I don’t know if they are the same stream. I suspect they are not. KRSP-FM HD2 is streamable online from Salt Lake City (search for “103.5 the Arrow Deep Tracks”) and WDRV-FM HD2 is streamable online from Chicago (search for “The Drive Chicago Deep Tracks”). Happy hunting.

I agree, The Eagle doesn’t get out much. They spend too much time just ripping off J105, from the music to the promotions. KKGL is not even original enough to think up a new name for the “half price hookup.”
I miss the simple days of Album Rock, when you could hear new Sammy Hagar or new Aerosmith bumped up with Zep or early Van Halen. My gripe with local rock radio is the lack of current mainstream rock cuts. New AC/DC is about to arrive, but don’t bet the grocery money you’ll hear it in Boise. Maybe a “one and done” spin by two of the Jackyl-to-Journey obsessed classic rock stations.
