Another note about JBG
Don Day | August 5, 2008I won’t beat this point into the ground, but “Rick” left this comment that I felt should be elevated:
While I agree with Don that Rocky and Roxx are awesome, I think the thing that sets Journal Broadcast Group apart is that it is a strong TEAM. It’s not just Rocky spending hours on a phone line or Rochelle’s Myspace work and all of the live in-studio mixes she does. Today for example, we have a big remote with J105 and Jason, a remote tech is not only setting up everything, including two inflate-ables, running the PA and Marti, etc. But he has taken it upon himself to be the “J-Bird” and run around being the mascot. No one asked him to do it. It’s close to triple digits out there! Or, Rocky going to the Knitting Factory to make certain a live “Sound Check” on the X goes off smoothly. And Shannon, the Journal Receptionist. I don’t have to tell any of you who have been in the business for a while what a thankless job that is. But she always is cheerful, answers the callers questions, appeases them, etc. And Kristine Simoni, Promotions Director-Goddess(she also came to Journal from KF95) Not only does she handle promotions for all the Radio and now, doing the same for KIVI TV, she also is the Mid-morning voice of J105! Or Jeff Hoffert, The Lead KIVI TV Engineer, who will go up and work on an FM Transmitter and thinks it’s cool that he is getting to learn about radio and goes over and above the call almost on a daily basis. Lastly, the guy that holds the whole thing together and frankly, I don’t know how he does it. Well, yes I do. He trusts the rest of us to do our jobs…
Thanks, Bob. It’s been a great ride!
Maybe I missed the point but it sounds like the folks at Journal are doing the same things that everyone in the business are forced to undertake at this time…
It seems like everyone I work with or have worked with is (are) doing something in addition to their required job duties. Those who refuse are usually not around for very long.
Tis the season to be versitile… Journal doesn’t have an exceptional staff, just one that is willing to whatever it takes to survive.
Therefore, those of us who are smart are the ones who are able to surpass all expectations…
If you’re gonna elevate some good deeds – make sure it’s all encompassing. I know some fine folks at other clusters who deserve recognition.
Ruby at Citadel
Lots of the KIZN crew (yes, it pains me to admit that)
Tom Raffetto and Jodi Sali at Peak
Let’s show some love where it’s due!
“Therefore, those of us who are smart are the ones who are able to surpass all expectations…”
Or who manage to find employment in an industry that respects their talents. Not that that’s easy these days.
I’m sick of hearing how employers are doing people a favor by “giving” them a job. Employers exchange their money for YOUR labor. There ain’t no “giving” in that equation.

Perhaps you have missed your calling. You should probably take all of your wonderful ideas regarding employer/employee relationships. Then buy your own station and become the philanthropic person and business you wish all others were. Seems to me that actions speak louder than words.
Good Luck
I admire Rocky and his passion for his job. Where I work at the moment, there is no passion for what I do. I go in at the last possible moment and leave as quickly as possible. When I was in broadcasting, even though I wasn’t always making tons of money, there was a passion for the job, so I put in 12 and 16 hour days in some cases.
When the company is run well, management allows that passion to express itself so that the employees can achieve extraordinary results.
Bob has raised and has ruined many a great talent.

Huh? Where do you see “philanthropy” in what I said? I merely pointed out that employers are NOT doing employees a favor by employing them, that THEY pay YOU in exchange for the work YOU produce. You see a fallacy in that?
Rainshadow- Boy can I relate. Its one thing to have a passion for what you do…I have a job much like yours…its just a job. It’s only a job. All you can do is hope that like a really bad movie, it will end sometime so I can move on to something else…something far more satisfying….God help us all who have crappy jobs and even crappier managers!
The best of the Boise clusters I’ve ever worked for.
Not to pile on the love fest, but I’ve never worked for a better GM than Bob. Always willing to sit down with any employee, not just the higher-ups.
Can I mention Bob drove a gold Camaro? Please?
Bob’s an awesome guy. He’ll make them break you.
