Magic’s Play Anything Day

Don Day | August 8, 2008

KZMG/Magic 93.1 is doing an all-request day – with proceeds going to Project Play’s campaign to put special needs playground at Nampa’s Lakeview Park.

Folks can call in, plop down $20 and hear any song they want. $40 ensure it is played next… and a donation of $50 gets the crew to stop playing the current (often awful) song.

Plus, one young listener got to interview the Jonas Brothers – thanks to a donation from their parents.

So far we’ve heard an hour of Twisted Sister, Motley Crue, Eddie Rabbit, Sir Mix-a-Lot (a few times), a little Queen and more.

If I hear another fricking crappy MP3 that is bidng streamed over the net…played on the air…. Memba when a station actually HAD a music library? Tina Turner and “simply the best” sounds god awful….so did “somehwere over the rainbow”. UGG

BTW…how come no calls on air from people making donations?

Don’t we already have a station in the valley with the tag…WE PLAY ANYTHING….

Then again that one is an automated, satellite fed wonder with absolutely no personality..

RadioActive…You’re correct, there already is a station that “Plays Anything”, it will probably be #1 when Arbitron comes out next week…and they don’t charge $20 per song either.

Oh and get your facts straight, Bob is not satellite fed..The reason people listen to Bob is to get away from the so called “personalities” who just like to here themselves talk. This was illustrated perfectly on Friday on Magic when you had 6, that’s right SIX, “personalities” all fighting over the mic…Bye Bye TSL

It was a fund raiser you idiots! The aren’t trying to be BOB(who would want to be), they were trying to raise funds for a playground. What are we going to critique KIZN cares next. “I heard they are auctioning off a homemade quilt” goodbye TSL!!

The difference is that “quilt” was probably made by Trace Adkins mom or something…! ha ha OR they will acution off a Kurt Busch drivers suit.

According to allaccess, Magic raised 20K for the kids playground.

That is good. Magic’s 12+ ratings just came out….ooh. NOT good…

Slap…No need to get all worked up… My point is, fundraiser or not, they wouldn’t have went the “we’ll play anything” route to raise money if they thought their listeners would hate it. So that means, playing anything is appealing..you can see this from the numbers. Maybe if Magic would mix up their playlist a little more,(less Tooker more music) their numbers wouldn’t have been so dismal.

Nice Try, but I wasn’t trying to and therefore didn’t insult their fundraising efforts. I was simply making the point that the format they went to for a day was a good idea. The TSL comment has nothing to do with the fundraiser, but the obnoxious talent hosting the fundraiser. I can tell you for certain they didn’t raise $20K

20K is what Allaccess reprted…I mean what the press release from Magic said they did.

My only complaint was the POOR quality of the songs…crappy streamed mp3’s do NOT belong on the air…crappy song and then a crapper mp3 of it makes it “double-y” bad ;)

It is interesting that most of the agency dubs and those from other stations now come in on MP3. The problem is this: Crappy codecs. Encoded at 192kps to 320kps (my preference), they don’t sound bad. But using the consumer “LAME” (the real name of the CODEC) codec instead of the professional version from Franhauffer, it sounds horrible and is filled with artifacts.

Unfortunately, most ignorant cosumer-types encode them at 128 kps and they are terrible.

The compression scheme was invented in 1987, so it is over 20+ years old at this point.

As for the future, I see a migration to AAC+, which is a step up. Unfortunately with AAC+ there are DRM issues that prevent it from becoming more widely used, but if you look at the professional scene, it will soon become the codec of choice. But even then, if you keep it at 48kb rate, I can still hear the compression.

Obviously uncompressed is the way to go when possible, but if not, we in the industry need to push for a higher bit rate, especially when we send out dubs!

I know what you mean…usually you hear new rock stations playing the latest cut off an mp3…that the record company sent over.

This was soooo bad it HAD to be streamed audio from a site that they were playing.

There was a time when stations on Bannock would take an mp3 and the convert it to the scott Studios mp2 format. oh boy…watch out…those were real bad.

Anyone remember lisening to KOOL 104 and you’d hear a Beach boys song that sounded like crap. I was told at one time that Jack would dub in a GOOD version but somehow the Clear Channel “version” crappy version ended up back on the air…

There is no excuse for bas sounding audio in 2008. LAZY is the only thing I can think of.

One huge misconception today is if it’s “digital” it’s better. Well, as has been so well pointed out, digital can be “crappy” too. An MP3 at 128 may sound good on your home system or in your car. I actually listen to a lot of MP3’s that are at 128. But, the minute you try to cram one of these through the processing used on today’s radio stations, the artifacts pile up and it is nothing short of awful. Not too many years ago when memory (storage, hard-drives, etc) was prohibitively costly, compression was the only way stations could afford to store their audio. And not all compression methods are equal. Some survive the processing better than others. But, also previously mentioned, this is 2008. Storage and memory are affordable and the need to compress no longer exists for the reasons of cost. But, stations are stuck with huge libraries of compressed stuff, and it will take a long time to flush it all out. And, we have trained our listeners to accept poor quality. I am so amazed at what people will listen to these days. The distortion and smashed audio would have never been acceptable a few years ago. So, as long as the listener will listen to it, there is no real incentive to improve the quality. Or, is there? Maybe if broadcasters took a better look at quality, we might actually get more listeners. What a novel concept !
