Impact swtich complete
Don Day | September 6, 2008As expected, Impact Radio Group finished its frequency transition – moving KQLZ/True Oldies to the 99.1 dial position. 100.7 becomes KPDA/100.7 La Poderosa. Impact is touting the signal coverage for the new station – which stretches from Twin Falls to Boise and beyond. As we notied, Eddie “Piolin” Sotelo will fill the morning syndication slot.
It does not matter how far a signal can cover if the station is ran poorly! Why would they put the station on the air with only a morning show and only have 4 or 5 advertisers? Here is a side note Impact and KWEI have english people running their stations (yes they do have Hispanic dj’s and program directors) but the decision makers are english!!!!! Bustosmedia has from top to bottom the owner to the local managers Hispanic managers who are in tune to the Hispanic culture. Maybe that is why Bustos has been on top of the Hispanic Market since they arived a few years ago!!! I think it is hilarious that KWEI (and soon Impact) are all over the place trying to tie into community events to get their name out and with Impact soon launching their marketing campaign of their spanish station and yet Bustos does not do any of that and still ranks as the #1 spanish station in the treasure valley. KWEI’s answer is to get the BSU football games on the air,and yet they cant even do that right! Calling a game on a cell phone, breaking in back to the station in mid advertisement (only if the advertisers knew) or mid song. Again it goes back to englsih ownership running a hispanic radio station. Some may listen maybe for the whole game, maybe for a few minutes but Hispanics dont tune in for american football. KWEI has got themselves into the financial situation that they are in and soon Impact will find them selves in the same predicament if they continue to sell 5$ commercials just to have something on the air
I have listened to La Gran D 101.9 on occasion and I only have one question: any particular reason the music on Bustosmedia’s stations all sound like 32kbps wma files? The low-bitrate songs they use sound absolutely horrrendous. 106.3 sounds only marginally better than 101.9 does. It makes XM radio sound good.
Fidelitywise, 100.7 sounds the best of the four stations on my Yamaha stereo. I hope that it works or it will just prove there are at least one too many stations in this market.
That is strange. We carry the La Grande format from the same satellite and it sounds great. I’ve also listened to 101.9 while in Boise and thought it sounded fantastic, but I am guessing 106.3 probably doesn’t have the same processor.
El, there’s one song in particular I’ve heard. I don’t know the name for sure, but it’s “Ser,” which is a really poppy song by a female singer that seemed to be recorded at “old fashioned” real player fidelity. It really sounded tinny and awful.
Of course, that was on Magia. I’ve not heard a “Ke Buena!” format yet. (as someone that did not experience regional Mexican culture, I didn’t care for La Gran D, but liked Magia’s pop sensibility)
My guess would be this: much of the music is released via the record companies on mp3. Although we do subscribe to HitDiscs from Jones TM, the mp3’s get to us much sooner. If those are converted between formats and then recompressed for digital delivery over the Comstream receiver, it is possible that they could sound funky, especially under the high-impact audio processing that the format requires. I don’t work for Bustos, but being their FIRST affiliate nationwide with La Gran D, I can make some guesses. I will say that Felipe Chavez, their head engineer, REALLY knows his stuff and has done a great job setting up the network.
Nice racism Miguel. With your logic, only blacks can work R & B/Soul and god forbid a white guy own a station of that format! Deja de estar tan maleducado. No somos “english”… Yo soy “anglo” o mejor dicho, “Americano”.
Miguel… explain then why 93.1 El Rey in Portland is #1 12+ and #1 18-34 with a white guy like me as OM, a black guy as the GM, and a Malaysian guy as the DOS. My PD, on-air staff and most of the sales staff are all hispanic, but everyone up from there ain’t.
I’m with Jim… Oh, hi Jim! :-)
La Grande le parte la madre a La Poderosa! I’ve heard La Poderosa and am not impressed at all. First of all, whoever says their processing is better than KDBI is crazy. KDBI has one of the better sounding stations in the area. Second, crazy to do a national morning show and then leave the station automated with song-tagging the rest of the day. Regional Mexican only succeeds when there is INTERACTION and personality. Third, learn how to produce some decent commercials. There is so much echo and special effects on some of them that you can’t understand a damn word. I can assure you that Gustavo at La Grande or Melvin at Radio Variedades, or El Chupacabras at La Fantastica would never let that kind of crap on the air. Fourth, your playlist of 300 songs is burning badly and the 1:45 rotation on some songs and repetition of the same artists in the same hour smacks of amateur hour. But then again, what would you expect from Impact’s corporate? What could have been a great station is mediocre and vanilla at best. What will be the next spin on 100.7’s format wheel?
The next flip of 100.7’s frequency won’t be for a long time. It’s off to a phenomenal start thank you very much. Listeners and advertisers are flocking to it as we’ve finally got professional, Spanish language radio in Idaho. Calls all the way from the Magic Valley to the Treasure Valley coming in.
Your comments remind me of the old Big Band Era song, “It Seems to me I’ve Heard that Song Before….” I’m not holding my breath, guey.
Friend of Fuentes why would you say the next flip of 100.7’s frequency wont be for a long time? That says to me that it is already been thought of !!! Your answer should have been it’s NOT GOING TO CHANGE AT ALL. And yes you are probably getting calls all over the Magic and Treasuer Valley from listeners because it is a new station (like we all do when there is a new format to see how it sounds) that will soon wear out. And for advertisers flocking to the station that is a lie,if it was true why are they not on the air?? And the ones that have bought have been the same one’s since 100.7 el pequeno started. Secondly how do you expect to make any money to support the station when you sell 5$ spots??? you have already cheapened your station. Even KWEI sells more than that!! As for finally there is a professional run spanish station in Idaho. You have a dj who is not a dj just a traffic girl who gets lost on her que’s,the music plays to loud over her speaking.Maybe that is why she never moved up at Bustosmedia from traffic!!! keep on giving out them 25 cent buttons for promotions that goes a long way.
Miguel, I thought it was 100.7 “La Pincherosa.” LOL By the way, a lot of news services write obituaries for well-known individuals ahead of time. Maybe Don ought to write the obituary for this format to have it ready when Impact pulls the plug.
Not to change the subject, but I’m really upset that I don’t have a radio that will tune in 99.1. I really miss the oldies station. I’ve tried everything, and 99.1 just isn’t there! Now what?
Miguel:
There must have been 800 of those 25 cent buttons out there. Oh yeah, the fact that the “La Poderosa” promo was being played over the concert speaker before and after every act that performed was a nice touch.
You sure seem to be talking a lot about a station you’re not worried about.
Well you know what they say when you are a joke then you are the talk of the town. And as for 800 buttons, I was at the event and there was not 800 people there and I watched as La Pincherosa (sorry thanks to Flavor Flav you will never get rid of that name) just walked up and pinned the buttons on people with out asking if they wanted it. Did you look in the trash and the parking lot? I did, they were all over the place. By the way, how times a day does your station get knocked off the air by your amatuer dj who doesnt know what she is doing?? KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK you are making KWEI and BustosMedia look better and better every day.
they did trade for the booth/promos. I heard it straight from the only seller they have there
spanish radio sounds better.
I love my rancho kuna the best
Miguel:
There may be a few technical glitches with live and local radio – but I guess Bustos wouldn’t know much about that – since everything comes from your automation system in Sacramento.
BustosMedia’s programming works, that is why BustosMedia is the 5th largest hispanic radio network in the U.S. you cant even pick an origanal name! How many La Poderosa’s are out there. oops I mean la pincherosa. keep on finding excuses and I will keep on firing back at you.
To the guy who thinks Bustos sounds better the 99.1, FYI that’s what modulation in excess of 150% will do. If they’re not scared why don’t they run legal?
Oops! Mistake on my scorecard and apoligies to Bustos. It’s 99.5 that’s modulating at 185%!
Wow…. This is a classic thread for this site. Bickering, infighting, posturing, jealousy and hatred; all for the world to see. Congratulations posters! You are providing an in depth study on why radio gets less than 9% of all ad revenue and gets zero respect. Do you people realize that when you do a Google search for Radio stations in Idaho this is the first web site that pops up? Prospective employees, prospective listeners and prospective clients all get to see this crap. Grow up posters and grow up Don! Idaho Radio News is only a inch away from being just like the Globe or National Enquirer. The sensationalistic headlines and stories are robbing our local radio industry of any credibility we may have attained. And what about the employees that works in these clusters? Do you guys think you are doing anybody any favors by constantly pounding away at their ownership? Why would you want to have a hard working person in our industry worried about the wild claims many of you make? With the economy, we have enough to worry about without lying awake at night worried about our jobs. No wonder two broadcast companies have banned IRN from the building. I’ll leave you with this: This could be a positive place for broadcasters to go. It could be a great resource for all of us so we can GROW our industry. Until it becomes mandatory that posters use their real names and email addresses and unless Don starts reporting news instead of raising open ended questions that look like news, this site will continue to be a poisonous forum. I’ll check back in a month but I doubt there will be any improvement.
Editor’s note: “Whiners,” at least I put my name on the line – which is more than I can say for you. You made four comments under three different names and are responsible for one of the nasty comments. You can’t have it every which way
Hello everyone,
My name is Miguel A. Juarez I work for Bustos Media. Recently I received a text message from Rosita Gomez from Impact. Stating how she thought a comment writen here, was writen by me. I am only here to clarify that this person by the name of Miguel is not me. This is the only comment I have had the need to write about this webpage and hopefully it will be the last. We, at Bustos Media dont really mind the gossip going on around these web pages for good or bad. We simply do our job to the best of our ability. We specialize in creating succesfull advertising campaigns for our clients. Our programing department is located in Sacramento and our local DJ is Gustavo Acosta. We focus on our clients and Gustavo, well he focuses on doing his best on the streets. Thats his job. Personaly any advertisiers that read this article if you are interested in launching a well thought out campaign. Please feel free to reply to this email. I willl be more than happy to help anyone out on creating a campaign, that it be, in the Anglo Market or the Hispanic Market.
Bustosmedia never pretended to be local. They are really local. local with call ins and promotions. You see “El Matavacas” daily on the streets and you hear him on the air. BOB FM has a van on the streets but no DJ. Ask yourself which one is more local. Chucho El Perron,Paty la prieta Linda and more have been here locally. Has or will Raul Brindis? Eddie Piolin? NO and never will because KWEI and La Pincherosa Buy the programming from univision. What does that tell you. THey copied BUstosmedia’s format but they cant be origanal. How stupid can la pincherosa be to have piolin show and run national commercials on his show and now you wont get the national advertisers to buy from them locally because the spots are already playing locally through the national network. VERY SMART MOVE.Flavor Flav maybe you should lay off La Rosa. She knows no better.Dangle the carrot and she will follow. Already it is happening, buy BOB FM and you can get our small spanish station for 2 or $3 bucks. Where is the integrety????I predict that Bustos & KWEI will be doing damge repair for the spanish radio market for years to come after La pincherosa has left the Boise Market. 100.7 is damaging their worth by selling so cheap. Sooner rather than later your tactic of $30 per piolin spot and after is 0 or 5$ will run out when your inventory is full. Then what do you do??? Advertisers are buying because they know that they are paying for so little and getting so much because of the little inventory and you ARE STUPID TO TELL THEM THAT,WE DONT HAVE ADVERTISERS SO BUY US AND YOU WILL GET MORE THAN YOU BUY. You wont have many more promoters in your pockets very soon when they learn that you are just using them to get to the top, when they are looking to get to the top. The bridge always breaks. And then where will you be? blaming Bustosmedia again.SO many people could not cut it at Impact and have left, Darrell your golden egg was at Citadel not Imapct. It is funny that when Peak & Citadel had it out Bustos just let Impact do what they wanted to get employees with no worries. Perhaps because they knew that they were not ready 2 cut the big time.Pincherosa, poor programing, poor dj’s,poor sales staff makes for a poor station
