THE nailed it. 100% of the product is what happens in the on-air booth and the bean counters just keep shagging the product. Radio listeners don't drive around thinking "gee this station has no personalities and play bland music but they've got a great station van they traded out for the cost of an air talent, so I'll keep listening." My next car will be XM-ready!

"THE…you are so ON THE MONEY!! What separates radio from the 'ipod age'…is TALENT/PERSONALITY! I can’t begin to tell you how many people I talk to who DO enjoy good 'banter', or an air talent who is GOOD…and has personality!"

Absolutely! The problem with the people who run radio today is that they are NOT "radio people." They are bean counters who take the same approach to the radio business that they would apply to any other business: cut airstaff, cut airstaff and cut some more airstaff.

Radio is THE single best medium for the presentation of personality and, in the age of the iPod, perhaps the WORST for the presentation of music.

Keep thinking short-term, stupid license owners! I don't know what terrestrial radio will look like in ten years (if it still exists) but I DO know the future ain't in playing music with no personalities involved.

Jim, why didn't you look into Sirius for business? I seem to remember it only costing like $25/mo. But, I certainly have to agree with you about that all.

One of my fitness centers is in Payette and "Lite" was about the only music station we could get with any regularity. Problem is, my customers complained that it was boring... I went to DMX in all of my clubs ... still boring but no commercials! (and, it covers my butt with ASCAP/BMI) I think the world of Crystal and I think she sounds great considering the T & T restrictions.

"Why don’t you all make donations to all these stations not making any money because advertising is down, advertisers are cutting back due to the crappy economy, which is the worst thing they can do to themselves, let alone the stations. It’s so weird how you peeps think a station can keep it live all day and all night and pay people with magic money."

We live in the age of the iPod and other MP3 players which are essentially juke boxes which play only the music you like with never a song you DON'T like and NO commercials, ever.

Radio cannot possibly compete with that by being an inferior juke box with songs that any given listener will not like and many minutes per hour of commercials.

What can work--and has worked historically--for radio is PERSONALITY! It's the one thing which your iPod CANNOT duplicate.

Firing the air staff may cut costs in the short term but it's just hastening the demise of radio.

If owners are not willing to put money into the only thing which can help radio compete with the newer technologies (TALENT), then they should get out of the way and make room for people who see the handwriting on the wall.

Lack of talent? I'd say lack of funding. Why don't you all make donations to all these stations not making any money because advertising is down, advertisers are cutting back due to the crappy economy, which is the worst thing they can do to themselves, let alone the stations. It's so weird how you peeps think a station can keep it live all day and all night and pay people with magic money. Unless your the one writing the checks and know what the profits are, if any....hit yourself in the head with a giant Clue Bat...k?

I guess they expect the song tags to make up for the lack of talent. "Better and brighter", they call it.

I can hardly wait until Wal Mart embraces this. Just think it will be neat to roam the isles and try and find the token employee... oh, wait...I can go to Kmart and experience this now!

Sadly, I think that what has happened to 107 is going to become the trend rather than just an oddity....
