Limbaugh leaving KIDO for KBOI?

Don Day | October 6, 2008

You win some. You lose some.

KIDO/580 AM picked up Bronco Sports from long-time home KBOI this summer, and subsequently launched an ad campaign touting how “it’s all here.” News. Broncos. Rush.

Sources tell Idaho Radio News that Rush Limbaugh will not be heard on KIDO after the first of the year – moving instead to rival KBOI. Such a move would blow a hole in KIDO’s mid-day lineup and boost the fortunes of KBOI.

An e-mail to Peak Boise SVP Kevin Godwin for comment went unanswered. I’m told KBOI is not yet able to promote the move and that it will happen after the first of the year.

Limbaugh is syndicated by Premiere Radio Networks and just signed a new $600 million deal. His show is heard on roughly 600 stations nationwide.

KIDO lost some bargaining power when it was sold from Clear Channel to Peak Broadcasting in 2007. Premiere is a Clear Channel subsidiary – which generally gives CC stations a leg up in negotiations.

Wow…that hurts. Forget about the shear number of listeners Rush carries, and forget about the fact that nobody wants to “listen” to the Broncos. How bout the loyalty comparison between the bandwagon that is “Bronco Nation” and the absolute loyalty of Rush’s audience. (I’m actually a Bronco alum and fan, but even Coach Pete can see clearly how loyal the fans and media are to BSU.) Say what you want about his politics, but Rush wouldn’t be getting such a huge payday if he wasn’t worth it…afterall…we all know how radio works right? The Bronco contract doesn’t even compare to the cash cow Citadel just received.

This might make perfect sense….since KBOI is running teases at their newscasts regarding a public announcement Wednesday AM…. so could this be the big announcement….. ????

KBOI’s sigal footprint would be huge compared to KIDO…. and if KBOI can exercise a night time replay option of Rush … then that would take advantage of that aspect….

WOW!!!! Paul J. & Chris in the mornings followed by Rush, Sean, and Nate!!! That’s 14 hours of good, quality programming.
I would like to see Savage replaced by either O’Reilly, Dennis Miller, or Jerry Doyle. O”Reilly could be moved up and replaced by Miller, Doyle, or Laura Ingraham.
What is KIDO going to replace Rush with? Maybe they will shift the remaining programming upward. Surely they won’t broadcast seven hours of Coast to Coast AM.
Oh well, at least I won’t have to change stations twice a day now.
Now to get the Broncos back where they belong.

I was kinda hoping that KBOI would also pick up Coast to Coast so that KIDO would stop interrupting it with Bronco sports programming…especially come basketball season!

I could do without Coast to Coast and all the weird ideas. What would they fill with from 9 pm to 4 am? Maybe Dr. Ruth from 9 pm to midninght followed by either Savage or Coast to Coast. Who knows?
KBOI’s Midnight Trucker show isn’t bad. They have too many commercials, but the content isn’t bad.
Maybe I’ll start a radio show. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

It’ll be nice to have such a great line-up combined with 50,000 watts of juice. Now Rush won’t cut out on me when I’m driving north. KBOI even comes in clearly (at night) about an hour north of Lewiston.

Laura Ingraham is currently on KIOV. I’d like to see KBOI pick her up in the Savage time slot. I’d support that move.

But who is KBOI going to let go to pay the $100,000 + a year broadcast fee to air Rush. Nothing comes for free. Nate, PJ, watch your back!

I wonder what financial return KBOI gets for the $100,000 investment and what return KIDO gets for their investment in local radio.
How much money did KBOI invest in Bronco sports to allow them to get Rush? If they are simply turning their money over, this could be a good financial move.

Just want to assure you I’m sticking with KIDO…until January.
    Thanks for the memories.

Ray M: See the thread called “More on the Citadel job cuts”.

Here’s the ugly side of being a publically held company. When you swallow the price tag attached to a whale the size of El Rushbo you need to make financial room for it.

We IRN dwellers tend to focus on Boise as the center of the universe, but we need to see the whole forest and not the trees. That show is costing them a bundle. In the short term they have no hope of recovering that cost. Realistically it will take them at least 6 months, probably closer to a year to see ant quantifiable, meaningful returns. Citadel stock is in the tank so budgets have been slashed nation wide and managers have no choice but to adhere to them strictly to appease the stockholders and bean-counters. So the listeners come in a distant third place. Are a half dozen local folks in Boise worth one Limbaugh? Can Limbaugh recoup all of the missing BSU income AND support the sizeable sports-staff-without-a-gig? The Citadel guys think so. Lets all just hide and watch and see what happens shall we?
