KWYD up up and away

Don Day | October 30, 2008

KWYD/Wild 101.1 is up and running. Yesterday I tuned in and heard silence (can you hear silence?) – today the station is looping Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” on the eve of All Hallow’s Eve.

A single bumper says “It’s coming” tomorrow morning at 10am.  So peel your ears and get ready for a rare station sign-on.

The station that once served the McCall area is now largely gone for those listeners. FM KDZY/98.3 stands alone as the only commercial FM with roots in Idaho’s heartland.

UPDATE: After the Thriller stun, the station debuted as “Virus 101″ at 10am – but changed AGAIN to Wild 101/Idaho’s Party Station at about noon today.  The music was more Alt. Rock for the first two hours, but now sounds thematically similar to KSAS/103.3 Kiss FM – and is probably as urban as Boise will ever get (but still pretty poppy).

This isn’t Impact’s first shot at pop  – after several attempts with KTPZ/Music Monster 99.1.

The station is running promos ala the “I’m a Mac & I’m a a PC” making fun of “Whose House.” VERY reminiscent of Kiss signing on and targeting KZMG with lots of promos mentioning the cross-town comp.

So the All Access note posted in comments here isn’t correct… :) (Unless they decide to change formats for a third time today…)

UPDATE 2: The station is pumping 15,000 songs in a row – which at an average of 4 minutes per song works out to about 40 days, taking us into December commercial free.

When did “God’s Country” 90.9 FM hit the Boise market? I stumbled on it yesterday. Most likely, it won’t get great ratings, but I like it.

90.9 made the switch to “Gods Country” late on Wednesday night of last week. Ratings are a non-issue, because the station is just another satellite fed, non-commercial station owned by The Educational Media Foundation.

I have complained about the fact that The EMF had four signals in this valley, broadcasting the same Air 1 programming material all at once, for several years. I’m glad that they finally put something different on one of those signals, so they aren’t wasting quite so much spectrum space.

The Virus… an interesting choice. A hole formed in this market where the alternative format could fit, after The X shifted towards Active Rock. It looks like Impact jumped at the opportunity. I figured that at some point it would happen. I just wonder how well it will do.

    From AllAccess-

    A Virus Spreading Through Boise?
    Nasty Bug
A few weeks back ALL ACCESS rumored that IMPACT RADIO GROUP had applied for the call letters KWYD for its BOISE move-in and might be launching a Rhythmic station as “WILD 101.”

However, we now hear KWYD will debut today at 10a as “THE VIRUS.”

Did IMPACT change their plans after JOURNAL flipped KQXR from Alternative to Active Rock? Or, are Director/Programming MIKEY FUENTES and consultant ANTHONY ACAMPORA searching for an antibiotic so they clear up this “virus”? Stay tuned!

It’s a good station if you want good, positive music for background. A nice break from all the depressing economic and political chatter.

Yeah, but did we mention 15,000 songs in a row commercial free? Thanks for listening in today. We had a blast.

When I launch my new station, it will be called “Ebola 105.”

“The station that eats your internal organs.”

Can’t you see the bus signs now?

Sounds like it may be hard to stomach. Early reviews indicate “it” is in the toilet.

“God’s Country?” Gee,what kind of format would that be?
Reminds me of an old Groucho line: “this is god’s country, and he can have it.”

Why didn’t they leave it in stunt mode for a few weeks to get some buzz going?

Ken- Your comment reminds me of what a co-worker once said about my present workplace….

“This aint the end of the world…but you can see it from here!”

If you worked where I worked….you would understand perfectly.
