Journal cutbacks
Don Day | December 4, 2008Another round of cutbacks in the Boise media world – this time at Journal. The group cut several, including sales staff, a web producer and KJOT/J-105 program director Dave Sparks.
UPDATE: Not a fun few weeks folks. In the last two months, Journal, Citadel, Peak, Idaho Business Review and the Idaho Statesman have all made cuts. As far as I’m aware, KBCI, KTVB and the Idaho Press-Tribune have not – but who knows what the future holds.
If any of the laid off folks wants to get a message out – whether it be a goodbye or pitch for future employment, e-mail me at idahoradio@gmail.com and I’ll post it on the home page.
And…Dan…..Mc…..McColly remains. Amazing. Sorry, Sparks…enjoyed listening to you… sorry to see you go! Good luck!
Up to bat next……Citadel Brodcasting, on deck…Impact
You have to realize that Dan McColly is one of the most important people in that building. Without Dan… even more people would have lost their jobs.
That said, it is very sad to see Sparks leave. He was a huge asset and his absence will be difficult to overcome.
OK, so who programs J-105 now?
Sparks is truly a class act. As afterthought previously stated, Sparks was a huge asset to J105 and JBG. He is one of the best PD’s I have ever met and had the pleasure to work with. Best of luck, Sparks. Hopefully our paths will cross again down the road.
I thoroughly enjoyed the 2.5 years I worked with Sparks, and I was very disappointed when I read the news Sunday when I got back from vacation. I have no doubts that Sparks will land on his feet, the problem for Sparks and everybody else who is getting laid off in medialand right now is WHEN will a person land on their feet again. TV and radio are in worse shape now than it was after 9/11, and there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. I hope, as an industry, we are simply able to survive this one.
I want to echo the first paragraph of Afterthought’s post. Dan McC is and has always been one of the good guys in Boise media.
Having never met Mr. Sparks, I can’t comment on the 2nd graph but wish him all the best in securing new employment.
There was a time when I could not have imagined myself saying (or even thinking)this, but it’s a good time to be out of radio. Unfortunately, the economic realities of the rest of the world make all employment less secure these days.
