You have always been able to listen to KIVI’s station on the FM dial on 87.7

Editor’s note: Correct – but that will end on February 17th with the digital cutover… unless the government delays the change.

The radio stations get to air “local news” without hiring a local news staff. They get to sell more local ($5.00?) spots. The TV stations get additional promotional exposure. I’m reasonably sure, based on past industry practice, that there’s no exchange of cash involved, especially in the case of Journal Broadcast Group since they own all the stations involved.

Aside from jobs not being available to broadcast professionals who could (should) be performing local news services for these “local” stations, what’s the downside?

The loss of jobs would not be considered a downside for “local” corporate owners, many (not all) of whom have focused for years on how to eliminate people by adding substitute and/or re-run content.

It must have all been preparation for the recession, right?

A further comment on the quality of radio news we’re getting today: It’s Monday morning and at least one of the “major local” news/talk operations is giving us repeated exposure to the Brad Little story — a story that broke last TUESDAY and is now 6 days old.

In not-so-ancient times, when we had “real” local radio, it was said that what you heard on the radio was NEWS and what you read in the paper was HISTORY. Seems to be the reverse these days.

    Sheesh.

Anyone know what kind of response KGEM has received for this? I’m assuming that the reviews would be positive. However, as Clyde mentioned above, it would be interesting when they refer to watching certain video segments when listening on the radio.
