True Editor, but what did it take to achieve that?

Cheap tickets, an Idaho win over BSU last month, and Vandal fans.

It's not like BSU fans just up and decided, "I suddenly feel like supporting the Bronco basketball team."

I'm curious how one game of decent attendance offsets 3 years of pretty embarrassing numbers. Wasn't that long ago (yes, even when the Steelheads and Stampede were around) that drawing 5K on a Thursday night against Cal State Fullerton was considered a pretty mediocre night.

And I'm also a little curious how BSU feels that they played every card in their hand-- from a nationally-ranked regional opponent to a Saturday night timeslot to an appearance from the BSU football team-- and STILL came up SIGNIFICANTLY short of a sellout.

Plus, how many of those 7K were Utah State fans? Sounded like a decent number (at least a few hundred?).

Editor's note: As of early today, the school had sold more than 9,000 tickets to tomorrow night's game -- which is on a Wednesday... and also happens to be on TV.

This sounds like a very interesting study for anyone interested in mass media and it's impact on local sports. I would propose a one year study to determine if television coverage does have an imapct upon local sports. However, one would have to be careful since the Hawks and Stampede (to the best of my knowledge) are not televised. Therefore, the study may have to focus on televised collegiate sports in the Pacific Northwest or the WAC.
Speaking of 24/7, how do I get it on Dish Network?

Nick's article has got to be one of the most uneducated piece of writing I've ever seen. "Boise State should tell KTVB they can't broadcast the Idaho game" Are you kidding me? Not only does this game get the opportunity to be broadcast in Northern Idaho but it gives the opportunity for more fans to be part of the game. Attendance will be high for the Idaho (on tv or not). When BSU fans rushed the floor after knocking off #17 Utah State it just excited those fans at home even more to say "hey those games look fun, we should go". Most of the people watching the games on TV wouldn't go regardless. TV is nothing but more exposure for the teams and BSU would NEVER tell KTVB they couldn't air the Idaho game or ANY game they wanted to air, home or away. Just remember that BSU fans are fair weather fans and attendance at BSU is based on the quality of the team and coachs. Not because it's on freaking 24/7.

Weird... last time I checked all the football games are on TV... and they sell out. And the Steelheads Friday night games are all televised live... and it's their most attended night of the week.

A booming set of entertainment options and a lagging economy hurts attendance... not TV.

Editor's note: Think maybe I was grouchy this morning? This comment's a tad snippy. OK... a lot snippy.

And if it hadn't been on TV, there would have been close to 10,000 people there. Sorry, TV hurts attendance at these games.

One of the greatest recruiting tools that ANY college or university can have is the ability to tell student athletes that their games will be aired on some kind of media.

Its a powerful tool for everyone. The athlete gets their ego pumped and stroked as well as the bragging rights and tapes for pro sports, etc.

The college gets free pr for those who would never take/make the time to go to a real game in person. It generates millions of dollars of free interest.... And the TV station gets free local programming....

If anyone is in doubt about how this can work in the bigger markets....ask Ted Turner.... He used his pro teams for the programming and kinda did really well but that is another story.....

And regarding the comments of the "local" paper....how typical....

So good for KTVB and BSU....and I am NOT a Bronco either but in this case the U. and the TV make for a great team!
