Willing Monkey,

The problem is this was a sales promotion for a local company. It it had truely been a community event I would have been the first to be involved.

Too many times we are sent out to cover things where the station makes money, the sales make money and we are told "this will be a great for exposure". What is wrong with the "DJ" making some money when everyone else does.

We log many public events but they are real ones, not ones made up to get free media.

Robert,

If you are in this industry, you should look for a new job. Part of our job is to be seen in the public. If these were a commercial event, I might agree with you. But since this is a benefit, why not?

We in radio have a symbiotic relationship. Sure, sometimes they suck our blood (not referring to this particular event), but frankly we need "them" too! You could argue it is parasitic, but it all comes out in the end. As for your argument we need money, sure, but we also need job security and this helps achieve it.

Those who fail to get involved in their community, with events such as this, loose a lot of good will and positive PR. What station and what jock doesn't need a little attention?

Signed,

A willing "monkey" (using your term)

Yes, if I were still in Idaho I would attend. Problem is I'm nearly 3,000 miles away these days!

Why is it these places think "DJ's" are nothing but a bunch of monkeys to put on display.
They want us to come out to their "Home Developement" to promote their support of the Middleton Library, do the event at the Library. It is nothing more than an attempt to get attention for their place.

It is time for these places to understand radio doesn't have to give out free air. "DJ's" need to make a living too. I bet they didn't get Miss Armstrong for free.

I applaud all the radio professional in town who turned them down. It is time to give some respect to those who make it our profession, God knows we get little of it in our own buildings.
