The publication started to fall apart when Nielsen purchased it in 2006. I saw tell-tale signs 3 months ago when it disbanded the on-line "Radio y Musica," its Spanish version. Back in the 80's and 90's, it was the Bible. But when you can get breaking news in a matter of minutes on the internet, and BDS and Mediabase becoming more of a fast reliable source for charts/music, it is an anachronism.

Still, it is another major indication of how radio -- and the spinoff industries it supported -- is becoming an altogether different critter.

I heard of R&R's demise yesterday from friends who got the news on their Blackberries while attending the Bay Area Broadcast Legends luncheon at the Berkeley Marina. In the old days, we would have read such dramatic radio-industry news in R&R and perhaps up to a week after the fact.

The times they are (still) a'changin'.

"But being a print publication covering a shrinking industry in a bad economy is no easy way to make a buck."

God knows they weren't going to make money selling "help wanted" ads these days.

I remember sneaking the P.D.'s copy of R 'n' R into the station bathroom so I could see who was hiring. Sad to see it gone, but an unfortunate sign of our times.
