All news must go! Nothing held back!

Don Day | December 9, 2009

All -

I will no longer publish IdahoRadioNews.com after December 31st.  I am moving into a new role at KTVB, and on January 1 will become Internet Sales & Product Manager.  I’m very excited about the new challenge.

But it means that I will have to put aside this site.  This will not be my last post here — in fact, I’m hoping to empty the notebook over the next few weeks.  I’m out of town presently, but have a bunch of time off coming my way, and want to end things here right.

We’ll do our annual holiday goodwill post, we’ll look at our 2009 predictions polls, go through some fun history-type e-mails, etc.

Here’s where you come in: Got something you want to see here? An old photo, or juciy bit of news… or something your station is doing really well? I want to know.  I will miss this endeavour – and hopefully you’ll find me on Twitter (@donlday) where I’ll probably still talk about radio news and notes from time to time.

Why now? This job is a change in focus, and because I’m not just a rabel-rousing newsie anymore – I need to align things like this to that new role.  You might say: why not turn this site over to someone else? I wouldn’t say I’ve ruled that out, and if you or someone you know makes an extremely strong case for it – I’m all ears.  However this is a brand pretty closely tied to me – and I will probably hold onto the domain name, archive and “assets” such as they are.

I’ve covered Idaho Radio for nearly seven years – and the connections and personal satisufcation I’ve derived from this hobby will be something I will miss.  Thank you for reading and being part of the IRN community.

Now… about that notebook emptying (see above!)

    Don,
This is certainly bittersweet news. Sounds like your new venture is an exciting one so big congratulations, but I’ll miss you here. Your insight, commentary, humor, candor … all things I looked forward to every day—IdahoRadioNews was one of the first widgets (is that the right word?) I put on my customized iGoogle page.
Take care and of course I’ll still follow you on Twitter (does that make me a stwalker?) and see you at the newspaper committee meetings.
    Best,
    Amy A.

I’m very glad that you have a new venture at KTVB, and I sure hope that you have a great time there! Sounds like a great role and I think you’ll be able to take it on with full force. This site is one of my favorite sites and I’ll truly miss it. Thanks for the site, and all you’ve done to keep it up! It’s nice to read some personal insight on the news around the radio and I’m truly thankful for what you’ve done.

    Thanks again!

Don, this site has been a great source for me to stay connected with “home” over the years. Thanks for the dedication to it and allowing me to share some of my own images these past years.

But I gotta wonder, haven’t we heard this before? I’m not completely believing you that its coming to an end! LOL

    All the best to you

    Dave

Congrats on the promotion, Don. It is, however, going to be a shame to lose this resource. Idaho Radio News is not only the best (only, really) source for news and information for the radio business, but it is also quite entertaining to interact with the other members of the forum it provides.

It is an unfortunate reality that interest in terrestrial radio is starting to diminish. It seems as though people are turning away from their radios and gravitating towards computers and personal media players for music, news, commentary, and entertainment. This is in no small part due to the fact that the quality of programming offered by local radio stations has also diminished. The enormous multi-million dollar corporations that have bought up most stations in most markets, are doing nothing but choking this industry to death.

This site has been a refreshing oasis of caring thoughts and ideas from interested people, in what has otherwise become a desolate barren wasteland of sterile corporate radio. That is because people who visit and comment on this site, care about radio’s past, present, and future. These individuals are mostly the “little people” who have made radio great. Unfortunately, media companies have largely taken this ability and creativity out of the hands of these individuals. Reading this blog has assured me that these people are still out there, and as long as they are, the industry of radio may still stand a chance to survive.

As a long time visitor to this site, I ask that If an interested party volunteers to take the helm, please give them the opportunity. Don’t let it die.

Don. I randomly found this site a few months ago while pulling an allnighter…studying. I’ve really enjoyed reading it alot. I spent some time looking through archives of things I knew stations had done in the past, and it was interesting to see what people were saying. Reading your blog has gotten me even mor excited to get into broadcasting once i’m finished with school.
Thanks for taking the time to run this site, I’m sure it took a fair amount. and congrats and good luck with your new position at KTVB

You have provided a great service to the area for the current and past people who have been in broadcasting in this area and for those like myself who have not worked here before ,but are former radio people from other areas that have taken an interest in what’s happening to the world of broadcasting locally. I certainly have looked forward to checking this site out on a regular basis to so what was going on in radio and TV for this area. Good luck in your new endeavors and thanks for the great job you have done for the rest of us over the years. Cliff Topp

Don- What can I or anyone else ever hope to say here…. IRN and your efforts have made a terrific difference in the enitre climate and culture of the broadcasting business here in the state and beyond.

Without this website there will be much chaos and confusion throughout the land of the stick and the home of the mic. Signals will bounce off unintenend targets creating nulls and voids all over the place. Coverage areas will go missing and there will be much depression amongst those yearning to fill in the blank left by management types who deem it unworthy to communicate with their employees or others. Transmitters will sulk and STL dishes will weep out of alignment, mixers will make themselves out of EQ and limiters will pout. Compressors will wait until engineers are down the road before self-adjusting out of wack….

So it has come time to climb to the high mountain top and look to the horizon as the Idaho Radio News cravan exoduses into the setting sun…. Who will save us from our void….Who will come forth from the masses to save us from the blinding ignorance that is forthcoming….Who will dare set camp upon this barren landscape and lay claim to endless prospects of taking on the task of re-building IRN or its new incarnation???

Who amonst you is brave enough to assume the task of informming, stimulating and educating both pro and newbie alike? Who will comfort the afflicted…..And afflict the comfortable? Who among you is a leader among mere men (and women for that matter) Are there no dragonslayers among you?

Well anyway…. Damn -saying goodbye really sucks. Thanks for all the good times, the insights, the mutual aid and support, It just wont be the same with out Don at the helm of IRN…But at least we had the time together (all of us) and just like those of you who “remember when..” with respect to the good old days of radio we can also rejoice that we had this time together as well….

So Don-in saying goodbye, may you find the success and happiness you seek and are certainly deserving of…and lets all hope that somewhere out there past the void of darkness that seemingly is ascending that someone…someone is putting on their suit of armour and warming up their keyboard with domain name in hand…..to lay claim to that which is so needed amongst the Fraternity of Idaho broadcasters here assembled.

    Good night….and Good Luck.

Don I remeber the days when you were still in High School and would come hang out with Steve and I in the studio. Our little boy is all grown up and on to bigger and badder things in TV land.

I will miss the posts here and getting caught up on the gossip. It was my place to go and get my radio news fix.

You’ll be missed but I know you’ll do great in your new ventures. You always do!
