Stop listening to us! Go listen to the other guys

Don Day | December 21, 2009

Here’s another one from the vault. Shannon Ellis was nice enough to share this audio file with me… three years ago. I forgot about it until now.

This is a little trick KCIX/then-K-106 liked to play when it was trying to take on KZMG/then-Magic 93.1 about ten years ago.

Listen here.

At today’s best music mix, K-106, we know radio stations need to play commercials. I mean that’s how they pay their bills.

But geez, enough is enough already. Here at K-106, we never stop the music for commercials more than twice an hour during the work day. But the guys at 93 must be getting rich at your expense. They stop for commercials three, even four times an hour.

In fact, I bet they’re playing a commercial right now. I bet they are. Go on. Go check. We’ll wait. (Jeopardy music).

Hey, we’ve all got to pay the bills, but at K-106, your favorite songs come first. So, back to what we do best. Today’s best music mix… K… 106.

I guess that could work… if your promo was scheduled within the window of their usual commercial break clock. But, you’re taking a risk that the other station will change their clock.

Also, I think advertisers get frustrated when stations vilify commercials on their stations, or so I hear.

If I remember correctly, KCIX jocks would wait until KZMG was in a string of spots — then “drop the bomb” by running this promo.

In at least a few cases, the Magic jock would be monitoring K-106, and when they heard the promo start they’d drop out of the commercials and get back to music… rendering the promo useless. Funny… but useless.

I remember once when “Franklin Cole & the Franklin Cole Radio Show” once said that on the air. “Go ahead, flip over to Magic right now. They’re playing commercials!” Only Brady, while doing afternoons at Magic, happened to be listening to K106 at that very moment, decided to play an extra song. So at the former Mr. Ed is telling people to go ahead and switch over and heard “Magic 93.1 ALWAYS PLAYS THE BEST NEW MUSIC FIRST!”

It still makes me chuckle. Anybody heard from Edward lately?
